This is THEE book to have for anyone who is considering converting to Orthodox Judaism. This book doesn't just tell you about Judaism and what it's like to be a Jew like so many other books. This book gives you steps to follow. It tells you what to do. And the nice thing is you can do each step at your own pace as you are ready.

My family and I are using this book for our own conversion journey and so far it's proven to be invaluable. There are so many things to consider. So many things to learn. My husband and I have both read many other books and also searched for information online. But, there are things in this book we didn't find in other books or online. I highly recommend this book to any potential convert to Judaism.

I am totally in love with this series

I am totally in love with this series. I felt the first book was not as strong, almost as if the author were still figuring it all out. The series just gets stronger and stronger, and is profoundly intelligent. He is also a fabulous writer. Very few false steps or clunky moments. I'm a great fan.

An Uplifting Discussion of the Power of Wonder and Skepticism

I've had this book in the basement for 20 years and I finally got around to reading it. I'm glad I did. Despite being a tad dated now, Sagan's thesis that it's the dual modes of thinking - wonder of the real world and skepticism of authority and baseless assertions - that most benefit societies. His clarion call for a people with mature critical thinking skills needs to be heard more than ever. He is clear that belief without evidence is anathema to a free, 21st century society world.

Because it was written more than 20 years ago, the book has lost some of the power it had in the mid-90s. Sagan never mentions the internet or social networks. The rise of Islamic terrorism is still a thing of the future. Though apposite in the mid-90s, some of his examples are less relevant today. This is the only reason I can't give this book 5-stars.

He avoids name-calling and strident rhetoric. He focuses more on pseudo-science rather than religion. The book is largely apolitical but the concluding two chapters are, he acknowledges, intentionally more political than the rest of the book. And these last two chapters are just as pertinent today as they were 20 years ago. (In fact, they have a prescient quality to them.) I highly recommend you read them.

Sagan would be 82 were he still alive. It's a pity he's not around to provide commentary. Recommended.

One of the greatest tutorials on logic and reason ever written.

I could write an absolutely huge review for this, but I must keep it brief.

If you are open-minded enough to wonder if your beliefs in ghosts, spirits, aliens, crop circle as alien artifacts, bigfoot, etc. are well-founded, this book will help you figure out the right questions to ask... and that is often the barrier that many people face when trying to vet these ideas with logic.

Remember... the closed-minded are those that will believe something no matter what evidence comes to refute their beliefs. Scientists are the most open-minded people in the world. They don't believe... they test, they ask for confirming evidence, and the good ones admit when their ideas are wrong or need to be modified in some way.

Carl Sagan is one of the mighty pillars of reason and logic of our age... this book will start you on your way to become one of those who can keep our society from falling in to another dark age of silly beliefs in mysticism, spiritualism, bogus (alternative) medicine, satanic ritual abuse, energy/faith healing, and other such pitfalls of magical thinking.

Give it a try... and remember, be open-minded!

Great Inquiry On Skepticism

When author Carl Sagan was alive he was one of the most fervent science popularizers in the country. What a science popularizer does is promote public scientific literacy, and as a byproduct of that they'll tout the importance of rational thinking, skeptical inquiry, and the means of scientific communication. This book does all the above but coupled with urgently biting rhetoric, good writing, and a high sense of passion and sincerity. The author explains the background and validity of much of the well known (and mostly "New Age") phenomena - well the one's borne out of superstition or desire of course. Some of the explained are alien abductions, hallucinations, psychics, witch burning, astrology and more. Also talked about are where many of these things fall in the social, cultural, psychological, and political spectrum.

Knowing further on Scarpa's life-work

Overall it's an a-okay edition, that gives a global idea of Carlo Scarpa's scope of work during his career. But if you're looking for extensive material in Scarpa's works you'll be a little disappointed: lacking of drawings (plans/sections, diagrams) that help to understand the projects, and a lack of original sketches from Scarpa himself. Another disappointment is the lack of photographic content for the Olivetti Store/Offices, or a lack of photographs of details from the iconic Brion tomb. With all this said, due its relation affordable price/ good quality print, I advise in favor of purchasing the book to all Scarpa enthusiasts.

Inspirational book on Scarpa's work

A book can't be all things to all people. Some prior reviews criticize this book for one thing or another, but for me it is just what I was looking for. Full of large, beautiful photographs of many of Scarpa's projects, each combined with a quick history and/or walk-through.
If you want more text, get McCarter's book. If you want great photographs, get Beltramini's book, or Taschen's book. Or do as I did and get them all.

So much better and more useful books

So disappointed with this text. Pretty standard math teaching - nothing inspired. Plus, not all the odds have answers in the back - just "selected" ones. Pretty useless for independent work. It is the text book of choice for an independent high school online class so we don't have a lot of choice.

High Quality

While flipping through this "mook" (as it apparently is called), it brought back childhood memories of browsing my Dad's Popular Science (or was it Popular Mechanics?) magazines. I like the smaller, "bookish" form factor as it makes it feel more - well, uhh - like a book. Since this is a magazine, I was curious to see how many ads I was going to have to wade through. I was pleasantly surprised to discover there were hardly any; I hope they keep them to a minimum going forward.

The "how to" articles are very well done, with a great amount of step-by-step information in both visual and written detail. My only problem now is time. Every project looked like so much fun it was disappointing to realize I wouldn't be able to do them all before the next issue would arrive and give me a whole new set of cool projects. =) My personal time management issues aside, Make is high-quality publication, top to bottom.

Super! (almost...)

What's not to love? The 9"x7" book format is much better than the typical magazine size, all the articles are interesting, and almost no fluff.

My only dislikes: The body type is really small, and some of the sidebars are set even smaller. Us older geeks really need a slightly larger font. I'm not a big fan of body copy set in sans-serif either, but can live with it.

I subscribed, PLEASE ship this in a poly bag. The Post Office can to cruel things to a magazine.

I've been looking for this!

I stay on the lookout for the "Boys" guides, you know, those old books dealing with science and technology (a hundred years old, perhaps, but still quite educational). I've looked into a few more modern magazines, such as Popular Mechanics (good for what it is), Wired (mostly a culture thing, I guess), and 2600 (fine, if my goal was to electronically knock over a Target store or something).

This is what I was after: a 'book' series dealing with hacking together hardware, making stuff work, and making stuff work better.

Now my 'to do' list has grown substantially, with a bunch of things I really hadn't thought of doing!
