The New World Order, CIA drug rings, UFOs in New Mexico, the JFK assassination, the Elders of Zion--all are the products of politically disaffected and culturally suspicious minds, writes Daniel Pipes, author of The Hidden Hand: Middle East Fears of Conspiracy. Here he examines the nature of conspiracy theories and asks, "What makes otherwise intelligent people believe in phony phenomena?" and "Why is antisemitism so often its central feature?" Pipes usefully lays out a few hypotheses about conspiracy theories, and distinguishes them from actual conspiracies (which are real, of course). Although the book could benefit from some organizational improvement, it contains many astute observations. Readers interested in its subject will find it worth examining.

A moderately successful effort to address an inherently amorphous topic. Pipes (The Rushdie Affair, 1990, etc.) enters a shadowy world by distinguishing between (real) conspiracies and (imaginary) conspiracy theories. Applying this distinction requires subjective judgment, but on the whole he maintains a reasonable perspective. ``Conspiracism,'' the most virulent belief in a conspiracy, dates back to the First Crusade and reached its apex in the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. While the British and American governments have been prime suspects in recent centuries, historically there has been amazingly little variation in the focus of conspiracists: Based on an apparently unwritten rule that the seriousness of the threat is inversely related to plausibility, Jews and various secret societies are the favorite culprits. The former have deviously hidden their intentions by posing as the persecuted, and groups as innocuous as the Freemasons and as imaginary as the Rosicrucians have dominated the world in ways that can be grasped only by the truly paranoid mind. The delusions of Hitler and Stalin moved conspiracism beyond comedy and into tragedy, but Pipes argues that these horrors have lessened its appeal and that conspiracy theories have been on the wane since the end of WW II. Oddly, while Pipes (a contributor to Commentary, the Weekly Standard, and other magazines) maintains that conspiracism is ``ambidextrous'' rather than a left- or right-wing affair, he nevertheless includes a chapter devoted to demonstrating that conspiracism of the left is now more dangerous than that of the right. This political sojourn provides insight into his more questionable judgments (e.g., downplaying the conspiracist element of American anticommunism and the popular appeal of the contemporary radical right) but adds little to a somewhat repetitive work. To be fair, however, Pipes does provide a solid sketch of a difficult and intriguing topic without indulging in sensationalism. Much of what Pipes is saying here about "conspiracism"--the belief in non-existent grand conspiracies as the motive force in history--is unquestionably true, and indeed one could add to it. There is often a profane thrill to conspiracy talk: People may dismiss these theories as the ravings of lunatics, but frequently not until they've listened wide-eyed to a lengthy narrative. Sometimes this material can be appalling, especially when a history of evil criminality is attributed to members of a religious group such as the Catholics or (of course) the Jews. In these cases, one can come away from the material with a sense of degradation, precisely as in the case of the most debased kind of pornography.

And yet, Pipes's view of conspiracy thinking as essentially profane obscures its historical scope and, I believe, its actual heritage. When Pipes describes this material as largely debased, he is certainly right. But is it pornography?

Make no mistake, though: Pipes's is a valuable and much-needed book. Scholars usually shy away from these kinds of subjects despite their tremendous and continuing influence. -- Reason, Charles Paul Freund

The smaller the mind, the larger the conspiracy...

Mr. Pipes follows the history of conspiracism and determines that it has two separate and distinct main threads: anti Semitism; and secret societies. There is occasional overlap and crossover between the two, but in general they have remained apart. While his research appears sparse at points, that may be due to the huge scope of his view, and to the very real difficulty in researching the essentially unresearchable (for example, how far can one study a "secret society" before losing oneself in the contradictions of myth, fact, and most revealing, myths accepted as facts?). At times the thread pursued by the author seems tenuous, but he does make a telling case in support of his thesis of these two dominant strains of conspiracism. Most chilling of all is his discussions of nations where conspiracism has become official state policy, specifically Hitler's Germany and Stalin's Soviet Union. I would have liked more indepth study of postwar American conspiracy theories, such as UFOs, the UN, and connections, if any, with various New Age beliefs, but that's my own particular interest. Mr. Pipes is mainly concerned with a broader historical picture.
While Mr. Pipes follows these twin paths of conspiracism, he demolishes the most widely accepted belief of the conspiracy theorists, that there are continuous sects and societies behind everything, and that all we see is simply the outward manifestation of their centuries long struggle for dominance. Make no mistake - the postulation of a continuous thread of conspiracism is not the same as accepting the existence of the conspiracies spanning generations and continents. While this book can not claim to be the definitive word on the subject (unless and until the Illuminati, the Elders of Zion, the Trilateral Commission, and the Rosicrucians open their archives), it does provide an interesting overview of conspiracism and demonstrates that the weirder paranoids among us have a long, if not distinguished lineage.
His encouraging conclusion that conspiracism has been increasingly marginalized (at least in the West) since the Second World War is offset somewhat by real world examples of collision between these conspiracists and the rest of society, e.g. Waco, Ruby Ridge, and Oklahoma City. Perhaps the greatest danger of modern day conspiracism is the extent to which preventive or corrective measures may backfire - how many of us are uncomfortable with the government's handling of the three cited cases, and of those, how many will be moved to align themselves with extremist groups?

Very good book, concise and illuminating

I found this book to be an excellent survey of the various different strands of conspiracy theories. Pipes goes through the long historical pedigree (if such a word is appropriate) of conspiracy theories, and he sets out a pretty good model for how to tell the difference between a nutty conspiracy theorist and a person with a healthy critical skepticism of the motives and actions of the government and other groups. While he is sometimes a bit too dismissive of those who agree with some conspiracy theories, his book is a useful antidote to the pseudo-intellectual quackery that many conspiracy theorists arm themselves with, and he shows the very real danger that these theories, when unchecked, can cause (e.g.: antisemitic theories and Nazism, antigovernment theories and the Oklahoma City Bombing). He also does a pretty decent job of putting the theories and theorists into a larger cultural and political context. However, for a good primer of conspiracies, real and imagined (I think, largely imagined), I'd also recommend reading "The 60 Greatest Conspiracies of All Time" by Jonathan Vankin and Ed Whalen (I think that is their names). Both of these books will keep you riveted, and introduce you to some fascinating and little-known facts.

A Fantastic Coffee Table Book, Even for Non-Architecture Fans.

I enjoy Legos a lot. Even as an adult nearing middle age, I still buy the occasional set and put them together. One series I've never gotten into though is the Architecture line. They're too small for my taste and I've never found them to look too much like the actual buildings they are modeled after. They just come off cheesy to me, especially the ones with "water." However I love coffee table books and especially design oriented ones, so I decided to give this one a try.

I have to say, I am really glad I picked this up. Normally my reviews aren't this gushing, but I loved everything about it. The book is high quality in terms of both substance and style. It comes in an extremely durable slipcover with glossy matte finish and Lego artwork. The cover of the book is an inversion of the slipcover design, as it is shadows/silhouettes of the Legos compared to artsy photos on the box. I have to admit, this is the best slipcover for an item I've seen outside the ones Nippon Ichi makes for its premium edition videos. Color me impressed.

The book itself is equally awesome. Not only do each of the twenty-two offerings in the Lego Architecture line get their own section, each one has a plethora of interesting information and wonderful photos taken of them. Take Big Ben, which is pretty much my standard for why I don't think the Lego Architecture line is very good. You get tons of pictures of the complete piece, each from different angles, along with footnoted and tidbits about the design process. You also get photos of the real structure the Lego set was patterned after. There is a side by side (well page by page) comparison of the real thing with the Lego version, and also a history of the building and its chief designer(s). So not only do you learn a lot about what went into the Lego version, but you also walk away with having learning something about the real historical piece. I loved that! each entry in this visual guide follows the same format and it really is a joy to read.

Besides the sections on the specific Lego sets, you also get a timeline for the series, profiles of the Lego staff that designed these sets, information on the creative process and a look at the different bricks used in all of the sets.

Although I probably won't buy any of the Architecture sets showcased in this collection, I really did learn a lot from this book and it was as fun to read as it was to look at. I walked away with some more respect for the Architecture line and I'm sure I will flip through this again from time to time.

Beautiful

For the true Lego Maniac, this book is incredible. It is essentially a huge beautifully photographed catalog of the Lego Architecture series. Just about every model available in the series is included in the book.

On a pure coffee table picture book standpoint, this is a nice book. The paper is heavy weight. In DK style, the photographs of the full sized architecture are gorgeous. First opening of this book is awe inspiring, the book is held in a thick heavy cardboard slipcase. The book is bound in cardboard with glossy paper glued over the cardboard. The binding is tight and allows the book to be laid flat.

There is a bit of background text about the creative process and profiles of the artists that designed these models. The core of the book is each model. The formula is the same for each of the 22 models. A close up picture two page spread of the model. On the next page the design artist's perspective on what was critical with the building. The facing page is a picture of the whole model. The next page pair is a breakdown of the construction with key elements called out. And the last pair of pages DK shines the most, beautiful pictures of the original building and some text describing the building.

As a catalog and casual coffee table book, this is outstanding. If I were in the market for one of these kits, this would be the best place in the world to make that purchase decision.

As a Lego Maniac that has built a few of these kits, the information in this book isn't much more than what is included in the Lego kit box. If you already own a number of these kits, this book is pretty but redundant.

Because Lego Architecture kits are priced at a huge premium over standard Lego kits, this book is a good choice as a catalog. As a dream book, it also succeeds. This is probably not the book for somebody that has collected a number of the Architecture kits.

The condition of what I got is bad. It seems like what I got is not brand new, but used one.
But the contents of this book is really great, my boy like it, he enjoy Legos a lot.

It is huge and heavy but otherwise a great resource

Good comprehensive coverage, but overly wordy.

Textbook is a good summary of all types of foot and ankle surgery, but it tends to get overly wordy and bogged down with some of the history behind many of the surgical procedures. Book is also heavily politically weighted to make some procedures look very positive and other procedures to look like they should never be performed. Overall, I think it could have been better written, but if you can sift through all the triteness of the text, it is a valuable tool to understanding most of the facets of foot surgery.

David Shulman is an Associate Professor and Department Head of Anthropology and Sociology at Lafayette College. He received his PhD in Sociology from Northwestern University. He is author of From Hire to Liar: The Role of Deception in the Workplace (Cornell University Press, 2007), co-author (with Gary Alan Fine) of Talking Sociology 5th edition (Allyn and Bacon, 2002) and co-editor (with Ira Silver) of Academic Street Smarts: Informal Professionalization of Graduate Students (American Sociological Association 2008). His scholarship addresses the subjects of deception, impression management and symbolic interaction.

Not the Best Way to Study Symbolic Interactionism

A dozen or so years ago, I included an earlier edition of Hewitt's Self and Society on the reading list for a graduate course I taught in the sociology of education. I wanted to make clear to students that regression-based models of status attainment and school effectiveness were not the be-all and end-all of sociology as it is applied to schooling and other institutions. Furthermore, I wanted something that was of general theoretical applicability but was not unduly dense. Foolishly, I had not read Self and Society, but knew it only by reputation as an introduction to symbolic interactionism that had gone through an unusually large number of editions but was still a seller.

I compounded my foolish error by asking students to read Self and Society after I had given a fairly long in-class presentation on George Herbert Mead's Mind, Self, and Society. Included with the presentation was a twenty page written synopsis of Mead's work that I had prepared for students to read.

The material in Mind, Self, and Society, even when presented first by way of in-class lecture and then using a written synopsis augmented with instructor's explanatory comments, is difficult. I had hoped that Hewitt's book would make Mead, commonly cited as the founder of symbolic interactionism, easier to understand. In addition, I wanted students to see ways in which symbolic interactionism had developed and been applied since Mead's work was first published in the early 1930's.

When I began reading Self and Society, knowing that my students had been assigned the same task, I was mortified. I suffered a good deal of self-inflicted embarrassment for assigning a book I had not read, one that turned out to be a redundantly wordy mish-mash of the worst sort of self-indulgence in high-sounding nonsense.

I was familiar with Herbert Blumer's theoretical work, but had concluded that his oft-cited position as the heir to the intellectual mantle of the author of Mind, Self, and Society was, at best, precarious. Gone in Blumer's work is the priority of the organism, an essential part of Mead's perspective. And gone is the genuine social behaviorism, with equal emphasis on "social" and "behaviorism" that were so crucial to understanding Mead. In their place, Blumer seemed to re-introduce a sort of mind-body dualism that Mead had so effectively overcome, whether or not he intended to do so.

In retrospect, I have no idea why I expected Hewitt's work to be any better than Blumer's. Maybe it was all those editions. However, instead of explaining and illustrating ways in which people use shared symbol systems to create meaning through social interaction, Hewitt, using a variety of locutions, all of which meant pretty much the same thing, repeated again and again that creating meaning through social interaction is what people do. In a rough and ready way, Self and Society was much like a windy meta-theoretical treatise on the philosophy of science wherein a philosopher, who may or may not know anything about science, tells you again and again how it should be done.

Had I known of its existence, a far better choice of books would have been Anselm Strauss' Mirrors and Masks, first published in 1956. In my view, Mirrors and Masks provides a genuinely brilliant foundation for what was to become labeling theory, a legitimate product of symbolic interactionism that has since devolved into a set of sensitizing concepts.

In any case, a reader who is interested in understanding symbolic interactionism, an expression Mead never used, would do well to go to the universally acknowledged source, Mind, Self, and Society. It's a difficult book, but one that is worth the effort. I think I under-estimated my students when I tried to work around it rather than assigning it. When struggling with Mead's first fifty or so pages, the reader may take comfort in the knowledge that the functional redundancy built into the book makes it easier to read the further you get into it. Then read Mirrors and Masks.

As for Hewitt, it's possible that there is more merit in Self and Society, especially in its later editions, than my students, all professional educators, and I were able to discern. Until someone instructs me otherwise, however, I'm stuck with the conclusion that Self and Society represents the sort of wordy, even if sometimes engaging, nonsense that gives the social sciences, especially their softer varieties, a bad name.
