My son loves this series!
By Tiger Fan
My 8 yr old doesn't enjoy reading but he begged for the first Bad Guys book from his school's book fair. I have bought so many books that have collected dust. I was dubious that this would be any different.

He finished it in one day (he was 7 then). This is a big deal!! He counted down the days until the 2nd book came out. He actually received it the day it released BUT he wanted to wait until the next day so he could read it in one day again

He now wants to be an author & illustrator.

Hilarious Books for younger readers
By chouse1125
These books are a hoot--my son picked the first one out at his school book fair and we roared when we read it. I bought this one and it was equally funny--lots of kid humor and a funny story line. We've pre-ordered the third one as well. The author's other series, the Yeti Files, was also a hit for our family. It is hard to get my son to want to read, but he looks forward to reading these books. He's in 3rd grade.

Short and cute
By Erin
These books are pretty short - my 10 year old can finish them in record time - but he enjoys them very much. He's an avid fan of the Captain Underpants series, and we've ventured from that into the Dog Man series and now these. I'd recommend them all, just know that they're short and won't occupy your child for very long if they're a fast reader.

Supersizing the Mind: Embodiment, Action, and Cognitive Extension (Philosophy of Mind), by Andy Clark

When historian Charles Weiner found pages of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman's notes, he saw it as a "record" of Feynman's work. Feynman himself, however, insisted that the notes were not a record but the work itself. In Supersizing the Mind , Andy Clark argues that our thinking doesn't happen only in our heads but that "certain forms of human cognizing include inextricable tangles of feedback, feed-forward and feed-around loops: loops that promiscuously criss-cross the boundaries of brain, body and world." The pen and paper of Feynman's thought are just such feedback loops, physical machinery that shape the flow of thought and enlarge the boundaries of mind. Drawing upon recent work in psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, robotics, human-computer systems, and beyond, Supersizing the Mind offers both a tour of the emerging cognitive landscape and a sustained argument in favor of a conception of mind that is extended rather than "brain-bound." The importance of this new perspective is profound. If our minds themselves can include aspects of our social and physical environments, then the kinds of social and physical environments we create can reconfigure our minds and our capacity for thought and reason.

Review
"brilliant...[providing] the best argument I've seen for the idea that minds are smeared over more space than neuroscience might have us believe" --New Scientist

"Supersizing the Mind is an important book for cognitive-science theorists of all stripes.... Although traditional and radical theorists are likely to remain unconvinced, there can be no doubt that Supersizing the Mind will set the terms for many of the coming debates." --Times Literary Supplement

"...it offers original thinking in the philosophy of mind, and it is highly recommended for academic collections in that subject." --Library Journal

"In Supersizing the Mind, philosopher Andy Clark makes the compelling argument that the mind extends beyond the body to include the tools, symbols and other artefacts we deploy to engage the world.... good overview of where things stand right now, emphasizing "right now"
By Dennis Waters
Andy Clark's unfortunately-titled Supersizing the Mind sounds at first like some sort of awful self-help book, like one of those "play Bach for baby in the womb" treatises.

But of course it is nothing like that. It is the latest of the prolific Clark's manifestos in support of what is more generally known as the Situated Cognition Movement [cf. The Cambridge Handbook of Situated Cognition], of which he is a founder. It is expansive and well-written.

Without wading into the detail (which, n.b., you will have to do if you read the book) this movement looks at the mind in the context of not only the brain but also the body and the environment in which the body wanders. It presents a strong contrast to computational models of the mind that are mostly about abstract representations and algorithms, i.e., Turing Machine implementations of intelligence.

I am sympathetic to Clark's approach and so did not read Supersizing the Mind as critically as I might have. If you are interested in understanding where some of the key arguments in modern cognitive science reside, I can recommend this book wholeheartedly. Clark does a clear and fair job of explaining both himself and his critics.

But it is important to remember that Supersizing the Mind represents a point in time. In five years the field will have moved on in terms of research and challenges to both old and new approaches to understanding intelligence. So get it while you can; otherwise wait for Clark's next.

Extend Your Mind: Everything You Ever Wanted To Know
By Lee Frank
One of the common failings of philosophy books is they try to do too much. Often the urge to prove everything is driven by the need to prove one's self, a justification of one's current philosophical position, sometimes of a whole career. "Supersizing the Mind" is not only an exception, it is an exceptional achievement in the breadth and depth of its scholarship and the concise quality of its exposition. Clark successfully makes the case for the Extended Mind -- and defends it equally well against its critics. He achieves this in little more than two hundred pages. A writer with less ability and more ego might have imposed (literally) the gravitas of a thousand pages to parade the extent of his erudition. If I have any criticism, it's that Clark writes too well to bury his insights beneath a mountain of references. The book contains so many enjoyable sentences, I wish he would produce another work filled with more of these and fewer endnotes. I suspect there is an audience for such a non-academic paper; perhaps a long Wired article. It would advance the popular case for the Extended Mind. Meanwhile, read "Supersizing the Mind." The quality of Clark's writing alone makes it worthwhile.

Significant Defense of the Extended Mind
By Mason D. Kelsey
One of the tricks in philosophy is to take a vague concept and pump the hell out of it. The mind is one of those dangerously vague folk psychology concepts along with self, consciousness, awareness, and most of the buzz words in Cognitive Science. So what one seeks to do is to whittle down the concept to get the bark off and find the essential core. Then and only then does it seem legitimate for one to work on what it would mean to extend it, whatever "it" is. But how long do we have to wait for the 'reductionist' Churchlands to whittle things down and solve that riddle?

Andy Clark has, by the accident of our history, been handed a hot potato in that mind is one of those "it"s that no one knows really what it is. So it is essential that we move to the biological neurological explanation of what "it" is as best we can. That is not what Andy is doing here, and he knows it. But what's the man to do? The problem is that mind appears to be a supervened phenomena which you are not likely to find in some lobe in the brain. Given that, what Andy has done is to work with what we know about the mind so far and he does tap into a lot of empirican studies that have been completed over several decades.

And he also knows when to stop. For example, he mentions extension of the mind into society, a social sense of the extended mind, but leaves that topic for a later book. Just as well as Alvin Goldman and Frederique de Vignemont are already guarding the gates to that temple with their rejection of the Embodiment of Mind in Society. It will take some interesting new arguments, perhaps from an evolutionary anthropological point of view (Sarah Blaffer Hrdy?) to find a way in.

They are not alone. Adam and Aizawa, Ned Block with his emphasis on qualia, and Robert Rupert are presenting strong objections that have to be addressed. Clark does address Adams and Aizawa in chapter five and in chapter six some of Rupert's arguments are argued against. But Rupert just published a new book (which you can also buy through Amazon) that may have some new arguments or even rebutals to Clark's refutations. (I haven't had a chance to read Rupert's new book so cannot comment on it here.)

I must admit my bias. I love Clark's book. I've read it several times and get new ideas each time I read it. And isn't that what philosophy is all about, building up the framework to get to the next level?

Read this book! Amazon has a great price and you won't regret it. Pay attention to chapter one, it seems to be about robots, but it is just the beginning of an argument for melting our ideas about what has to be embedded in the head. Andy admits to the essential neurological core of what happens in the brain. No brain, no mind. He just wants us to realize that there is more to the mind that what happens in the brain. By the time you get past chapter seven you will realize that is a no brainer. Then, just to settle you down, Andy puts on the brakes in the last three chapters and draws what he feels are the limits to extension.

So why is this all so very important? Because humans are about to launch off into a world that merges the brain with the external world that, coupled with genetic engineering, will forever change what it means to be a human. Just having the Internet has probably raised the average virtual IQ of teens by at least 10 points, if they can get over the game phase. (Clark doesn't consider the Internet a part of the Extended Mind, but I do.) Don't worry, it is not the scary story that Dr. Bill Joy fears. It is humanity that metaphorizes, not unlike a butterfly, or locust, your choice. But you need a manuel. Here is the beginning of that manuel.

“Drifter is the kind of deep worldbuilding sf mixed with elements of pulp Westerns and esoteric philosophical musings that is sure to hit the sweet spot for readers looking for a cerebral dose of action.” - Library Journal

In its frantic rush to survive itself, humanity has spread across the universe, colonizing and strip-mining countless planets. Abram Pollux barely survives a crash landing on Ouro, a lawless backwater world where life is cheap. After miraculously surviving not only the crash, but also a one-sided gunfight, Pollux finds himself in a ramshackle town, filled with other survivors shipwrecked on this strange, barren world. There he meets Marshal Lee Carter, an earnest woman giving her all to maintain order, a grizzled Preacher, convinced that Pollux' coming is a sign from God, and Emmerich Bell, the man who shot him down not moments after he dragged his body from the wreckage of his ship. What starts, as a struggle for survival quickly becomes a journey to the very edges of what it means to be human, as Pollux searches for answers among the ruins of this forgotten world. And if he can't have answers, he'll at least have his revenge.

From the creators of Viking, writer Ivan Brandon (Wolverine, Men of War) and artist Nic Klein (Captain America, Thor) reunite to bring you a chilling sci-fi tale from the strangest planet in the universe. Collects Drifter #1-5.

Mysterious and gorgeous sci fi: Inventive and spine tingling
By Che Cunningham
When I first heard the premise for the first issue of Drifter, I yawned. It seemed as though the story would be the repetition of the trite "guy crash lands on a strange planet and struggles to survive" model. Nonetheless, I was curious to pick it up, and did so with a fair degree of curiosity. While we ARE going off the "post crash survival" model of sci fi here, I can firmly say that what Ivan Brandon and Nic Klein are playing around with here
is nonetheless pretty unique in itself. Our protagonist, Abram Pollux, is a rough around the edges character, not really likable, and is struggling to find his way in this new world that appears to have threats at each and every turn he makes. What begins as a pretty straightforward narrative soon takes a turn into landscapes of the surreal, horrific, and at times, utterly confusing. There are several points in this first volume of Drifter in which one cannot entirely tell whether the story being told is taking place in the present or the past. As Pollux tries to figure out the puzzle of how long he's been on Ouro (the planet), why the man who shot him did so, and more, dark shadows from his past begin to creep into the picture, and
in cruel twist of irony, he begins to move farther from the truth the closer he tries to get to it.

This is not an easy story by any means, and one that I would only recommend for those who are highly interested in a creative team that's trying to show you something (relatively) fresh and original in what they're putting together. There is very little character development in this first arc, making readers not overly attached to the characters, but in a paradoxical way this also sucks you right into the story, as the intrigue, and subtle shades of wonder and curiosity only make you want to know more. If you're looking for something straightforward here, to put things bluntly, you're probably better off spending your money elsewhere. If this first arc of Drifter establishes one thing more than anything else, it's that here Ivan Brandon is aiming for a deep, complex mystery that will slowwwly unravel itself over time, with no easy explanations, no blatant hints, and no spoon-feeding that will get readers within glimpse of its resolution. If that sounds like a fun ride to you, then buy this trade NOW. If you love strange, complex, and eerie sci fi (with EXCELLENT art from Nic Klein to boot), you're in for a treat with this one.

I want to love this book. Premise is great. Artwork is fantastic. However, the story and sometimes dialog is disjointed. A one page prologue in the beginning, just to start us off, would have been appreciated. It seems to have gotten better, later in the book. Now, I'm still gonna buy installment 2 when it comes out...hopefully, since I know slightly what's going on now, it will be worth it despite a lack of editorial continuity.

Entirely Derivative
By Paul Burgess
I have to disagree with the reviewer claiming Drifter to be "Very Original." Drifter volume 1 as I see it is an exercise in scraping the top layer of fat off TV Tropes and calling it a day: the rugged amnesiac protagonist, a no-nonsense female sheriff, a camp-ily fanatical preacher (ugh), a mysterious grizzled man and the plucky young girl who is the only one that can get him to open up. The tired Space Western setting is identical to other, superior current series such as Copperhead: a backwater planet where people say "ain't" and not everything is what it seems. Stop me if you've heard this one before.

The art is well done but largely uninspired save for one or two character designs in particular. The panel layout on the other hand is truly baffling, leaving the reader flipping back through pages to figure out what just happened in an apparent attempt to mimic other series that have done this artfully. Characters' actions and turns will have you scratching your head before giving up on looking for their motivations.

I realize this review comes across pretty harsh, and I'm usually not so critical, but Drifter is one of the only trades of the last year that I couldn't wait to be done with. Maybe volume 2 will address some of these issues, but for now my recommendation is to check out East of West, Copperhead, and Storm Dogs instead.

Sloppy, unorganized and unhelpful
By Berkeley12
Nawy's book doesn't seem to have the student in mind. Each concept is presented in very brief terms and is then supplemented by several examples which have complications in them that were not discussed, leaving the student constantly wondering "why does he do that?" Moreover, the formulas in the examples often contain only numbers, forcing the student to hunt down their sources. Often, the numbers won't have a source. Nawy obviously knows a lot about the subject, but he doesn't seem very interested in effectively passing that knowledge on.

Not a learning tool
By TP
I have used this book to teach Prestressed Concrete. I chose it because it is the only book that's updated to the latest ACI 318 requirements.
The table of contents covers all the important topics that an engineer would want to learn; unfortunately the style is dogmatic. The equations are not properly derived or explained (some eqs are not derived at all); no physical understanding is conveyed. Some examples actually have the wrong solution (ex. elastic shortening losses). It is impossible to learn from this book. It is obvious that the book was not put together with care or attention to detail, or to be of any use to present or future engineers. Its educational value is close to zero. This is a perfect example of what a book should NOT aspire to be (a sellable list of sexy and tantalizing topics, lacking essence).
