Good Book to Start Learning to Use for Faces and Figures

This book was bought because I have no background and only a bit of self-taught experience in sculpture with clay. So far, I am still on the second project, a bust of a little girl named Amy. (See the picture of the dust jacket.) I have had several false starts, but I keep improving, so I have hopes. The book combines instruction in both the Mudbox program as well as the artistic end---proportions, shapes, anatomy, etc. I believe that I will be able to produce a good likeness.

My only disappointment is that the next project is a full sculpture of a figure of a monster, rather than a normal human being. I realize that the program was developed originally to create just such creatures, and perhaps they will be more to the taste of other purchasers. I think there is still something to be learned in the exercise, so I plan to continue on with it.

The book covers an earlier release of Mudbox, so there a few differences, but they are not so great that the book is not helpful. However, I would suggest that they and other publishers of similar books adopt the practice of the Nolo Patent It Yourself books; Between editions, they publish errata and addenda to the latest edition on their website. This is a smart business practice, because not only does it encourage purchase of a book that may be a generation out-of-date, but it encourages visits to their website.

This Technique goes Beyond Creativity! Well Done

This book, Digital Sculpting with Mudbox, by from what I have been exposed to so far, is way beyond my "old school" creativity and adds a wealth of information causing a new unlimited amount of uses. The book is well written but even better, very well illustrated. Bridgette Mongeon and Mike de la Flor explain techniques in a very palatable language, a nice blend between art and technology yet intriguing. Not as good as their Physics review book

This book was very helpful and I did pass the ARDMS abdomen registry exam. However, the actual test questions were a lot different and included more than what is covered in this book. For example, the ARDMS test now includes images and questions showing small parts such as the Achilles and the wrist which are not reviewed in this book. Overall, I think it did help me. The publisher says their review books are "thought-provoking" and this is very true. The questions help you think things all the way through. Especially for those great questions we all love like "all these can cause carcinoma EXCEPT."

Passing the ARDMS Abd registry

Just took my ARDM Abd Registry today, passed on the first try!!!! I know why am I not out celebrating instead of writing a review online. I just wanted any older sonographers who may be too afraid to take another credential exam to go for it. I am 52, took my ob/gyn exam in 1990, and wanted to get my abd credential too. The Davies Abdomen Review was a great place to start for someone who has been out of training for a LONG time. It helps to get you in study mode and is not so overwhelming you say forget it. By study this review you are building a fairly good foundation to begin. This review alone will not set you up to pass the ARDMS exam. I also studied "Examination Review for Ultrasound" by Steven M. Penny. Spent 6 weeks learning this book front to back. It also comes with mock registries and practice questions that explain the answer. Also, with any pathology that is described in the review that does not have a image, google image it. Look at alot of images of a given pathology. The absolute crappiest image will be the one to remember because that is what they use on the test. Good Luck

One of the best on the market

This is a fantastic fluid dynamics book! It is clearly written and easy to follow. The chapter exercises are very useful. Chapters include kinematics of fluid motion, conservation laws and kinematics of flows, Navier-Stokes equations, inviscid flows, laminar viscous flow, and turbulent flow. (The chapter on turbulent flow is excellent, balancing the right amount of theory and modeling.)
The book also includes chapters on important mathematical concepts such as base vectors and representations, Gauss, Green, and Stokes theorems, geometry of space and plane curves, coordinate transformations, potential theory, singularities of the first order ODEs, geometry of surfaces, finite difference applied to PDSs, and frame invariancy.
This is an excellent book that would be an excellent choice for advanced-undergraduate and graduate study.

More Math than Physics

This book is a very comprehensive one. It treats Incompressible flows, laminar and turbulent ones. It will guide you through the derivation of NS equation, boundary layer equation, and it will give you an introduction to turbulence. The book is complete in the sense that it deeply describes every aspect of the subject, but it does it ONLY from the MATHEMATHICAL point of view. No physics, no pictures (almost). It isn't ABSOLUTELY an introductory book: the level of mathematics is pretty high.

I bought this book about a week ago and I'm very excited of having it, but it's hard for me to read this book at my current level. After briefly going through the pages, I think this book will be very helpfull to me in a year, or so.. If you're an undegraduate student and taking your 1st or 2nd course in "Fluid Dynamics", a better choice for you would be "Fundamentals of AERODYNAMICS" by Anderson - it will help you to start in "Fluids" easier than with this text, and it's more "student-oriented". However, if you're a graduate student (and by "graduate" I mean "just about to graduate" - don't wait - it seems to be a very serious text.

About the Author
Colleen Belk and Virginia Borden Maier collaborated on teaching biology to nonmajors for over a decade together at the University of Minnesota--Duluth. This collaboration has continued through Virginia's move to St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York, and has been enhanced by their differing but complementary areas of expertise. In addition to the non-majors course, Colleen Belk teaches general biology for majors, genetics, cell biology, and molecular biology courses. Virginia Borden Maier teaches general biology for majors, evolutionary biology, zoology, plant biology, ecology, and conservation biology courses. After several somewhat painful attempts at teaching the breadth of biology to non-majors in a single semester, the two authors came to the conclusion that they needed to find a better way. They realized that their students were more engaged when they understood how biology directly affected their lives. Colleen and Virginia began to structure their lectures around stories they knew would interest students. When they began letting the story drive the science, they immediately noticed a difference in student interest, energy, and willingness to work harder at learning biology. Not only has this approach increased student understanding, but it has also increased the authors' enjoyment in teaching the course-presenting students with fascinating stories infused with biological concepts is simply a lot more fun. Great book on the Goddesses of India!

I have this version under the title Devi: Goddesses of India published in India. I am pleased with this book. Many books show Kali as a ruthless killer and destroyer, here you will read about a softer and yet liberating side of Kali for women and men. This book has many articles from diffrent authers which really gives the reader a look at diffrent devis from diffrent points of view. Once I began to read this book I could not put it down. I would also recommend anything by David Kinsley and Kali by Elizabet U Harding .

I'm in the process of reading this book- and am enjoying it. It is informing and looks at the Goddesses from different angles-which i really appreciate. I have learned quite a bit about Goddesses that I had never known before- and it has answered questions that even my parents and grandparents were unable to answer (all Hindu)

Only one God, but many forms.

"The monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have severely limited the portrayal of the divine as feminine." Please don't think because of the former comment that Hindus beleive in more than one God. The Gita says "God may take any form he/she pleases and at any time he/she pleases." These deities are manifestations ( dictionary definition of manifestation-- One of the forms in which someone or something, such as a person, a divine being, or an idea, is revealed. The materialized form of a spirit.)
