Enochian Magic and the Higher Worlds: Beyond the Realm of the Angels, by John DeSalvo Ph.D.

A step-by-step guide to the rituals of Enochian magic for reaching the higher spiritual realms

• Reveals missing practical instructions for the Enochian magic system received by John Dee and Edward Kelley

• Explains that the angelic realm is only the first and farthest away of the spiritual realms surrounding God

• Shows how to connect with the higher worlds beyond the angels to tap more fully in to the magical power of the Divine

In this comprehensive introduction to Enochian magic and beyond, John DeSalvo explains how the magic system transmitted by the angels to John Dee and Edward Kelley in the 16th century has until now remained incomplete and thus not as powerful as the angels intended.

Drawing on his in-depth study of John Dee’s diaries, DeSalvo explains how Dee and Kelley were given the Enochian tables and calls but their communications with the angels were severed before they received the full practical instructions for Enochian magic. To this day, most magical groups improvise and make up rituals based on their own ideas and imagination--the magic they practice is not true angelic magic.

After many successful Enochian magic rituals and years of his own spiritual work, DeSalvo has discovered additional key pieces to the magical system of Dee and Kelley, a system now known as Power Magic. He provides step-by-step instructions for more complete and accurate Enochian magic rituals and reveals how the angelic realm is only the first and farthest away of the spiritual realms surrounding God. He explains how to penetrate this angelic realm with Power Magic to reach higher spiritual worlds and receive more powerful knowledge and energy. He shows that by connecting with the higher worlds beyond the angels, we can tap more fully in to the magical power of the Divine and begin restoring the planetary magic of our most ancient ancestors.

Review
“John DeSalvo’s (Decoding the Enochian Secrets) is truly a significant contribution to our understanding of Dee and Kelley’s amazing experiences.” (Lon Milo DuQuette, author of Enochian Vision Magick)

“Dr. John Dee played a major role in world history. The highly influential ‘Enochian’ system of magic originated in his mystical experiments. Yet the centerpiece of his system has never before been published--a book that Dee clearly regarded as a monumental gift from God to humanity, communicated through his angels. Decoding the Enochian Secrets is definitely recommended.” (Joseph Peterson, author of John Dee’s Five Books of Mystery)

“John DeSalvo is one of the few minds on the planet that can comprehend a language of secrecy and reveal new meaning not apparent in normal language. (In The Seeress of Prevorst) his work on the language structure used represents a benchmark in Western esotericism.” (J. J. Hurtak, Ph.D., author of The Book of Knowledge: The Keys of Enoch)

"This step-by-step guide to the rituals of Enochian magic for reaching the higher spiritual realms reveals the missing practical instructions for the Enochian system received by John Dee and Edward Kelley. DeSalvo explains that the angelic realm is only the first and farthest away of the spiritual realms surrounding God and shows how to connect with the higher worlds beyond the angels to tap more fully into the magical power of the Divine." 8 The Technique of Power Magic

I had a pivotal experience last year when, as I was doing the Enochian Meditation and experiencing the silence and tranquillity that the meditation bestowed on me, I felt the presence of God. This state didn’t last long, but while it did I received a spiritual message: I was told that sometime during the following week I would be given special information.

Toward morning I got the message. It was simple. I was told that I could ascend to the highest realm where God was by using just one word, and I was told to use the name of God as this one word. This would enable me to go up to the place of profound silence where I would be before the Throne of God. This sounded good to me, but what word for God would I use?

People all over the world have different concepts of God and a different word for Him, such as God, Yahweh, Lord, or Allah. Given this, I thought maybe I would just use the word “God,” or a word that would bring the thought or idea of God into my mind. But that didn’t feel right either; it wasn’t a simple and elegant solution. That’s when it struck me like a lightning bolt--I needed to use the Enochian word for God, or the word the angels used for God when they communicated with Dee.

To figure out what the Enochian word for God is, I went through Dee’s diaries again to see what I might have missed. What I found was this: On Tuesday, April 10, 1584, when Dee and Kelley were in Cracow, Poland, they had another angelic communication, wherein the angel Nalvage gave the two men a tablet. On it was written the names of groups of angels and some short descriptions of them, which we’re not concerned with here. What we are concerned with here was something else written on the tablet in its four corners: IAD--the name of God.

Given that the angels deemed IAD to be the name of God, given that it’s a three-letter word (this is significant because the names of the Aethyrs are likewise composed of three letters, so they have the same structure), and given that the tablet was given to Kelley and Dee just prior to their receipt of the Enochian Calls by the angels, it would appear that this is the word for which I was searching.

The angel Nalvage did not name the tablet, which, down through the ages has been referred to as the Tablet of God or the Table of Nalvage. Nor did Nalvage provide instructions for its use or address its true function. I have my own theory about the tablet’s real function: I believe it’s the key to facilitating the Enochian Calls. What’s interesting to me is that the tablet was given to Dee and Kelley on April 10, 1584, and the first Call began three days later, on April 13, 1584, which to me implies there may be some relationship between the tablet and the Calls, or that they were meant to be used together. I believe the last statement Nalvage made about the tablet before he disappeared shows that my idea may not be off base. “Thy name be blessed, O God, which canst open a means, whereby thy powers immediately may be opened unto man. Power, glory, and honour, be unto thee, for thou art the true body of all things, and art life eternal.”

Kelley then says (in Latin): “Now he is suddenly vanished away with the Table. Amen.”

Thus ends the communication with the angel Nalvage regarding the Tablet of God. The last sentence from Nalvage is so important because to my mind it gives a clue to the tablet’s entire raison d’tre. It’s clear to me that Nalvage is hinting to Dee and Kelley that the name of God can open realms and powers immediately after reading the Calls and not subsequent to a long process of spiritual search and discipline. The name of God is the means by which one can access this higher realm of God and His powers.

To access the realm, first perform the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram and then read the Enochian Call. Then read the last name, IAD, slowly. This has the effect of moving you up from Earth at the center, through thirty concentric bubbles or spheres, popping each one as you go. You’re not stopping to look around or contact the angels, like you do in traditional Enochian Magic, but you’re moving upward through all these Aethyrs like a dart, piercing each one as you pass through it.

Once this has been done, you’re above the Aethyrs, above the angels. Don’t try to penetrate the Zero Aethyr or the God Aethyr, as it’s not in your power to do so. In a sense this is where magic and mysticism come together. You’ve gotten past all of the Aethyrs by your own will and initiative, in what has been an active spiritual process. You made the decision and carried things out. You are in front of the Zero Aethyr, you pronounce the name IAD, and then you patiently wait in this silent space for God to call you up.

Waste of money
By A reviewer from New York
If you are seeking practical instruction in Enochian, this is not the book. The book is comprised mostly of the authors long winded speculations (John Dee had access to an as yet undiscovered manuscript by Enoch) his being the reincarnation of John Dee (John Dee, John DeSalvo, get it? the angels told him this) and he's the "third Enoch" (angels told him this too). Throw in aura's, ufo's and crystal skulls and you get the idea. Don't waste your money. I returned my copy. There are many good books on Enochian. "Enochian Magic and the Higher Worlds: Beyond..." is not one of them.

Very interesting and good book
By Oscar A. Rangel
This is a different book, it is mostly for the debating mind, and practical for the ones that take action, it has very good points on views about many things on the subject of god, and our evolution, and most important the Magician Mystic path with I feel it is the correct one too, I gave him 4 stars because I think it is not about enochian magic, persay, but a different approach to contact god, with another table given to DEE.
And this is where I got lost... he goes into explaining the string theory and the multidimensional particles that in existence (hope I got it right) about how this fabric of string (the all) permeates all, and this is GOD, but at the same time he goes into explaining how using a different table given to Dee we can find God... but how can we find something that we are... it is just the personality the one that separates us from it, maybe the author can clarify this point which I got lost...

Review
"Brown analyzes prejudice from one viewpoint, the psychological, but with a variety of perspectives including personality, developmental, and applied. This reviewer was particularly pleased with the emphasis placed on both the social aspects of prejudice and its developmental nature. Brown's chapter 'Prejudiced Individuals' was compelling because of equal coverage given to the feasibility of such a concept and an open-eyed exploration of its limitations. Readers who are interested in that role that 'self' may play in the process of developing and maintaining prejudicial views will find chapter 6 of particular note. The most significant aspect of this work, however, does not come until the end. In the final chapters, Brown critically addresses the questions of whether prejudice is truly declining and the heretofore elusive challenge of how one can reduce it ... a balanced analysis of the social-psychological roots of the past, present, and future of prejudice. Recommended for upper-division undergraduate, graduate, and faculty readers." Choice

‘Following in the tradition of Gordon Allport and Henri Tajfel, Rupert Brown presents a cogent analysis of prejudice as a central social psychological phenomenon. He takes the reader on an organized journey through the literature on stereotyping, social categorization, and intergroup relations. Brown’s writing is both intelligent and accessible, and his examples are well chosen.’ – Professor Kay Deaux, City University of New York

‘Rupert Brown – one of the foremost social-psychological scholars of intergroup relations – has provided a wonderful, up-to-date alterative to Gordon Allport’s (1954) classic, The Nature of Prejudice. Like Allport, Brown writes with enviable clarity and renders even the most complex ideas accessible. Responding to the burgeoning research since Allport, Brown’s book deals with all the key issues – including social cartegorization, stereotyping, modern forms of racism and , for me, the burning question of how prejudice might be reduced. His book will both interest researchers and delight students, as it deserves to do.’ – Professor Miles Hewstone, University of Wales College of Cardiff

‘The material is impressive and up-to-date. There is nothing dogmatic about this book: each approach is presented in a fair and critical fashion. Students will get an accurate view of what social psychologists know about prejudice. When this is done with such talent, what more can one ask for? –Professor Jacques-Philippe Leyens, Catholic University of Lowvain

From the Back Cover
Prejudice is one of the most enduring and widespread social problems facing the world today. This book tackles prejudice from a social psychological perspective, and contributes to both its understanding and its reduction. Throughout the book readers are introduced to the major theoretical and empirical achievements in the field in a lively and interesting fashion. The author emphasizes the social nature of prejudice, viewing the phenomenon primarily as an intergroup phenomenon, one rooted in particular societal settings and shared amongst the members of different groups in those settings. Both classic and contemporary research is presented and illustrates, and the book includes many examples from contemporary life and different kinds of prejudice. Each chapter also concludes with a summary of the main points, together with suggestions for further reading. Rupert Brown’s new book will be welcomed by both teachers and their students as a balanced and readable introduction to this important topic.

He has published widely in the field of intergroup relations, and his earlier books include Group Processes (1988), and Contact and Conflict in Intergroup Encounters (with Miles Hewstone, 1986).

A Collection of Insights does not a theory make ...
By Herbert L Calhoun
This very scholarly work of updated insights, building on the pioneering and seminal work of Gordon Allport ("The Nature of Prejudice," 1954), rightly deserves all the accolades it has received. Like Allport's book, this one too is clearly written, thorough, coherent, and filled with precise illustrative examples that prove the author's main point (and the rule): that prejudice, in all its many aspects, is still alive and well.

On page 2, the author's self-description of this, his own work, is that of being a "collection of insights." I would more accurately call them a "recalled collection" of, or, "updated collection" of insights. And as important as these recalled insights are, taken together, they are just a further fleshing-in of details that we already know about. And with one exception to be discussed subsequently, they do not in any way break any new ground, nor, more importantly, do they constitute even as much as a proto-theory -- not to mention a full-blown theory -- of prejudice.

And thus even though I like this book as much as I did the one by Allport, I was very disappointed with its hidden thesis because I believe that anyone who has studied issues of prejudice, racism and discrimination as long and as hard as this author obviously has, knows that all roads inevitably do indeed lead back to social psychology. However, that said, once he has arrived at the gates of social psychology, it is not enough to just stand outside the gate with a megaphone and pontificate from on high. I think at the very least it is incumbent upon such an individual to then "kick the gate in; go inside, look around, and see what is actually inside this black box, and how a theory can then be fashioned from what is found inside. " In my view, it is the author's solemn duty to get inside that social-psychological black box and see what is in there that really makes the notions of prejudice tick? Once inside, the devil then does indeed lie in the proverbial details.

And thus, with all due respect to the author for what is clearly a fine piece of work here, I do not believe that he has even attempted to knock the gate in. Is it that he is too self-satisfied with just being able to stand outside the gate with his megaphone reciting the litany of things we already know about prejudice? It is almost as if he believes that the "Allport-Brown perspective" of "recollected insights on prejudice" is in itself sufficient as "stand-in" for "settled theory?" But I am here to tell them both, that it is not so. The author's (and by inference, Allport's) collection and recollection of insights is not the end, or even the beginning of the end, but is indeed just the beginning of a narrow pathway that should eventually lead to a sound theory of prejudice. In short, it is not enough to just suggest in grand style as the author has done here that prejudice is a universal phenomenon. In fact, once that is said the game is already up, isn't it? Once prejudice has been universalized by divine assertion, there is nothing else left to be said about it, right? Its "check" and "mate:" No longer is there any need to look for responsible parties, or to assign blame, perpetrators have no return addresses: We are all equally complicit in it, right?

Everything then neatly evaporates into the ether of inchoate references to the "human condition." Once prejudice is covered under (and covered up by) the laws of being universal and thus a part of the human condition, it carries with it the unearned authority of being final settled but forever implied theory, implied theory that will always remain in the halfway house of assertions and insinuations that are nowhere ever fully explicated and that almost never accord with the hard known facts on the ground of the human condition.

The brutal and incorrect backdoor implication, that prejudice is somehow universal becomes its own best self-justification. But the truth is that such assertions are little more than ready excuses and global rationalizations that give all subcultures the permission they need to engage in prejudice without accepting any responsibility for it. By invoking this global umbrella excuse early in the book, the author makes the rest of it an academic exercise about how best to tie down the other inessential details of this implied global theory?

But in point of fact, I think this backhanded way of theorizing is not the end of the story of prejudice at all. What is wrong with this approach is that all that it does is insinuate an implicit proto-theory of prejudice that cannot be easily tested, one that in the end becomes little more than a global excuse to be deployed by every subculture to justify its own local brand of prejudice. How easy is it to rationalize any prejudice whatsoever if you have as "top cover" the global rationalization that all prejudice is just an incurable part of the universal human condition? The logical corollary to this sweeping hidden and untested axiom of course is that nothing can be done about prejudice. QED

Unfortunately, a book review is not the best place to deploy a full-fledged theory of prejudice, however, this book of insights does give us some hints as to the direction we should be headed if we are to knock down the gates of Social Psychology and get inside its black box. The first and perhaps most important clue is in the compound phrase "Social-Psychology," which in my view should be reversed to be "Psychology-Social," where it then places the proper emphasis on the interactive and dynamic effects between "the psychology of the individual" and "the inhibitions (or lack thereof) that society imposes upon him and his psychology." It is the devil inside these details and their dynamic interplay that is where the "Holy Grail" of prejudice actually lies -- not in a single all-encompassing edict from on high that prejudice is universal, and therefore is the end of the story.

In this regard, I want to respectfully suggest two authors who have indeed "knocked the social psychological gate down. One is Mr. Brown's compatriot, Dr. Robert Young, and especially in chapters 7-9 of his magnum opus "Mental Spaces." And as a second reference, may I also respectfully suggest a careful re-reading of the brilliant Social Psychologist, Eric Fromm's book "Escape from Freedom," especially the Appendix called "Character and Social Process."

Both of these authors push aside the notion of prejudice being just another universal part of the human condition to be tolerated, and actually get into the nitty-gritty of what's inside the social psychological black box that might make this so. And what they find there in the dynamic interplay between the psychology of the individual and the rules of society, is the Holy Grail of prejudice. It is the same as what Freud and Darwin had already found, and what the Christian Bible repeatedly still tells us about in so many indirect ways: that much of human culturally derived prejudice is about simple, primitive, even primordial male fears about the need to maintain rules and walls of sexual exclusivity. It is why Arab women are still wearing Burkas, and why Americans still become uncomfortable when they see a black male holding hands with a white woman.

It is undeniable that these too are part and parcel to the universal human condition, but of quite a different color -- one that in addition to the two authors cited above, also include both Freud and Darwin, and more recently a host of other scholars, who all have recognized that primitive and primordial male sexual fears as being an integral part of the substrate of the human condition that causes prejudice. And true, while this too only knocks down the door, it is not a full theory of prejudice either, but at least it does not stand in the way of making further progress as calling prejudice a universal part of the human condition does. Five stars.

The Cost of Liberty: The Life of John Dickinson (Lives of the Founders), by William Murchison

“[Murchison] employ[s] his incomparable pen and vivid historical imagination in the cause of bringing back to life one of the most underrated and misunderstood of the Founders.”
—The American Conservative

The Cost of Liberty offers a sorely needed reassessment of a great patriot and misunderstood Founder.

It has been more than a half century since a biography of John Dickinson appeared. Author William Murchison rectifies this mistake, bringing to life one of the most influential figures of the entire Founding period, a principled man whose gifts as writer, speaker, and philosopher only Jefferson came near to matching. In the process, Murchison destroys the caricature of Dickinson that has emerged from such popular treatments as HBO’s John Adams miniseries and the Broadway musical 1776.

Dickinson is remembered mostly for his reluctance to sign the Declaration of Independence. But that reluctance, Murchison shows, had nothing to do with a lack of patriotism. In fact, Dickinson immediately took up arms to serve the colonial cause—something only one signer of the Declaration did. He stood on principle to oppose declaring independence at that moment, even when he knew that doing so would deal the “finishing blow” to his once-great reputation.

Dubbed the “Penman of the Revolution,” Dickinson was not just a scribe but also a shaper of mighty events. From the 1760s through the late 1780s he was present at, and played a significant role in, every major assemblage where the Founders charted America’s path—a claim few others could make. Author of the landmark essays Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania, delegate to the Continental Congress, key figure behind the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution, chief executive of both Pennsylvania and Delaware: Dickinson was, as one esteemed historian aptly put it, “the most underrated of all the Founders.”

This lively biography gives a great Founder his long-overdue measure of honor. It also broadens our understanding of the Founding period, challenging many modern assumptions about the events of 1776 and 1787.

Review

“John Dickinson’s vigorous defense of Americans’ rights as Englishmen won him renown throughout the colonies in the 1760s, but his refusal to sign the Declaration of Independence in 1776 diminished his reputation and came to be unfairly seen as his defining moment.... With The Cost of Liberty, a brisk, admiring biography, journalist William Murchison provides a fuller portrait.”
—Wall Street Journal

“[A] thoughtful and highly readable biography... Mr. Murchison, who illuminates a complex period in our history and with a sure and often novelistic touch brings his subject back to vivid life, makes a powerful and convincing case for restoring John Dickinson to his rightful place in the first rank of the Founders.”
—Washington Times

“One can read hundreds of biographies of the worthy men and women from the founding era, and this would be on the short list of those most beautifully written.... William Murchison has done his duty to what is left of the republic by restoring to us in charming and trenchant prose one of its greatest early leaders. This is an achievement I will pass along to my students and recommend to all lovers of liberty.”
—Chronicles

“[We should] be grateful that the veteran journalist William Murchison has chosen to employ his incomparable pen and vivid historical imagination in the cause of bringing back to life one of the most underrated and misunderstood of the Founders, whose intelligence and courage are badly needed in our time.... Murchison gives us a surprisingly riveting narrative.... Murchison shows with especial care and poignancy how much of a loss to the American conservative intellectual tradition, and to conservative ways of reading the Declaration and the Constitution, our neglect of Dickinson has been.”
—The American Conservative

“John Dickinson is perhaps the most neglected and least understood of the Founders of our nation. A man of principle and wisdom, Dickinson influenced the course of events and shaped the outcome in critical ways. William Murchison has brought him to life and cleared up some vital areas of the Founding. This book is truly a must read.”
—Forrest McDonald, Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at the University of Alabama, author of Novus Ordo Seclorum

“The Cost of Liberty is a delightful book—lively, warm, amusing, and intelligent. It brings a brave and wise man splendidly back to life.”
—Richard Brookhiser, author of James Madison and What Would the Founders Do?

“John Dickinson is the most neglected of the true giants of the American War for Independence. Bill Murchison has written a book finally, and fully, worthy of the author of more of our nation’s founding documents than any other man. This biography will stand for the ages.”
—John Willson, professor emeritus of history at Hillsdale College

“Like his biographical subject, John Dickinson, William Murchison possesses wisdom, a felicitous prose style, and a shrewd understanding, as Murchison puts it,of ‘the value ofno in political affairs.’ The Cost of Liberty is a gem.”
—Bill Kauffman, author of Forgotten Founder, Drunken Prophet: The Life of Luther Martin

“This splendid new account of John Dickinson represents the perfect marriage of subject and author. It is hard to think of a Founder more deserving of a second and third look than the admirable Dickinson. And it is hard to think of a writer more worthy of our admiration than Bill Murchison, a master of the English language.”
—Wilfred M. McClay, Blankenship Chair in the History of Liberty at the University of Oklahoma

Truly, and Always, An Indispensable Sort of Man
By Albert Alioto
This is an engaging short biography of a Founder who deserves to be more widely known. John Dickinson is noted as the author of LETTERS FROM A FARMER IN PENNSYLVANIA and controversial for his refusal to sign the Declaration of Independence. As William Murchison makes clear, Dickinson was not opposed to American independence, but believed that it should not be declared until the colonies were better prepared for war with Great Britain. It is hard to see how that could have been considered unreasonable.

Can there ever be a time when there is not a place for the man or woman who will stand in front of those in a hurry to act and ask, "Are you sure about what you want to do?" If we might not always have a Dickinson, we will always have Murchison's book to remind the rest of us to ask those questions.

It seems to me that it would not be a bad thing for the country if each incoming president was required to read THE COST OF LIBERTY.

A Man of Wisdom; Neglected By History
By Paul
William Murchison has written an outstanding biography of John Dickinson, a powerful account of a Founding Father who, for years, has stood in the shadows of our understanding of the birth of this republic.

Having recently read Our Lives, Our Fortunes and Our Sacred Honor: The Forging of American Independence, 1774-1776 I had to order this book, as so much of the work by Beeman on American independence was focused on the non radical element of men attending the Constitution Convention in Philadelphia before the war began.

John Dickinson was foremost among the leaders of Pennsylvania, and was very cautious about relations with England, in the hopes that America could resolve the differences between the colonies and the Crown (mostly Parliament) and resume the peaceful and prosperous relations that had been the norm.
Even after the blood that was spilled at Lexington and Concord, men like Dickinson feared that emotions from the colonies in the northeast (primarily Massachusetts) would encourage Americans to embark on a journey of revolution that would, in the end, create more problems than solutions.

Dickinson was from a powerful family of Quakers with holdings in Pennsylvania and Delaware. In his youth he went to London and studied law at the Middle Temple. He was a scholarly man and attained much fame when he published Letters From A Farmer in Pennsylvania in November 1767, stating some of the causes of dissent among the colonists as a result of the misdeeds of the ministers of England, along with the Parliament, and a very stubborn George III.
Some called him the pen man of the revolution.

His caution during the first Congress was not solitary as many of the delegates were reluctant to break with England, but all were concerned about the precedent of taxation, the restriction of trade and the building of monopolies by England in the colonies. Dickinson was no exception and the most prominent of the men who wanted to proceed cautiously in dealings with London. All of this flew in the face of people like John Adams, who felt that the time of independence had come. We all know the result, and Dickinson has taken a back seat in the history of our country because of his caution and his devotion to his principles. There are also comparisons made between him and Edmund Burke, a champion of America in the British Parliament. While they were indeed kindred souls, they were both largely unsuccessful in their endeavors, and in the matter of Thomas Paine, his writings, while in no way nearly as educated and lofty as Dickinson's resonated with the average American and stole much of the thunder from Dickinson's Letters From A Farmer.

The book is very good and Murchison is a master of the King's English. For example, in dealing with the conflict between Adams and Dickinson, the author tells us: "Both were men of vast moral courage-but courage weighed from different sacks, upon scales differently balanced." In another passage: "The Stamp Act repeal was a political poultice laid on the injured relationship between Britain and her American colonies." There are many more fine examples that the reader can find in this delightful book.

I certainly have to give this five stars. I would also recommend The Men Who Lost America (The Lewis Walpole Series in Eighteenth-C) in order to better understand the fix that the British were in during this time.

Good read
By Timothy S. Sharpe
A very enlightening and readable book about Dickinson and his times, who until I read this was only a name I knew. Especially interesting for me as a native of Pennsylvania now living in Delaware, the two states Dickinson lived in.

India's Nuclear Bomb: The Impact on Global Proliferation Updated Edition with a New Afterword, by George Perkovich

In May 1998, India shocked the world—and many of its own citizens—by detonating five nuclear weapons in the Rajasthan desert. Why did India bid for nuclear weapon status at a time when 149 nations had signed a ban on nuclear testing? What drove India's new Hindu nationalist government to depart from decades of nuclear restraint, a control that no other nation with similar capacities had displayed? How has U.S. nonproliferation policy affected India's decision making?

India's Nuclear Bomb is the definitive, comprehensive history of how the world's largest democracy, has grappled with the twin desires to have and to renounce the bomb. Each chapter contains significant historical revelations drawn from scores of interviews with India's key scientists, military leaders, diplomats and politicians, and from declassified U.S. government documents and interviews with U.S. officials. Perkovich teases out the cultural and ethical concerns and vestiges of colonialism that underlie India's seemingly paradoxical stance.

India's nuclear history challenges leading theories of why nations pursue and hang onto nuclear weapons, raising important questions for international relations theory and security studies. So, too, the blasts in Rajasthan have shaken the foundations of the international nonproliferation system. With the end of the Cold War and an even more chaotic international scene, Perkovich's analysis of an alternative model is timely, sobering, and vital.

Amazon.com Review
Nobody expected India--the country that produced pacifist leader Mahatma Gandhi--to go nuclear so soon or so suddenly. But that's what it did in May 1998, detonating five nuclear weapons, to the world's astonishment. George Perkovich offers a comprehensive survey of how India got the bomb, starting with early technical efforts dating back 50 years and concluding with a full treatment of exactly what India did in the Rajasthan desert and why. He challenges the conventional wisdom holding that countries pursue nuclear power mainly for security reasons. Perkovich says the motives, at least in India's case (and, he believes, in the case of other developing countries), were much more complex. An overwhelming desire for global recognition and national pride trumped everything else. He suggests the United States might have done more to head off recent events had the nation not lacked a coherent policy toward South Asia thanks to cold-war politics. India's rivalry with Pakistan didn't help, either; it's extremely difficult to be on very good terms with both nations at once. The footnotes are extensive and the details sometimes can seem overwhelming, but the book's topic may be one of the most important issues of the 21st century. In short, George Perkovich and India's Nuclear Bomb are to India what Richard Rhodes and The Making of the Atomic Bomb are to the United States. --John J. Miller

From Library Journal
Perkovich (W. Alton Jones Foundation) painstakingly describes the evolution of India's nuclear arsenal from 1947 to 1998. The stockpile resulted not from military need but rather from the efforts of India's scientific community and an extremely small number of politicians. Opposition groups, including several prime ministers, lambasted the diversion of funds from education, health, sanitation, and welfare programs to building bombs. Perkovich interweaves the complex relationships among India, the United States, Pakistan, and China regarding nuclear bombs, pointing out that none remained steadfast to principles. The work concludes with sets of principles that are then applied to other nuclear programs. Essential for any library concerned with nuclear issues.ADonald Johnson, Univ. of Minnesota Lib., Minneapolis

From Kirkus Reviews
A detailed narrative and assessment of Indias 50-year debate over nuclear weapons development. In May 1998 India joined the ranks of the worlds nuclear powers when it detonated five atomic weapons. In this penetrating and extremely well-researched and -documented study, Perkovich, Director of the Secure World Program of the W. Alton Jones Foundation, analyzes the complex and conflicting domestic interests and viewpoints that continue to fuel Indias nuclear debate. While the Western-oriented ``Realist'' school maintains that states act purely in their national interest and defense in an anarchic international setting, Perkovich dissents, claiming this assumption ignores the specifics of Indias case. Why did it act when it did, why not sooner? Most of Indias history has been typified by nuclear restraint, however labored. On the one hand, India has striven to be a stronger moral force than the West and the former communist world have been. Thus it long resisted the testing of nuclear weapons. On the other hand, India has pursued a quest to join the superpowers ranks. If superpowers have nuclear weapons, then India should have nuclear weapons. These contradictory poles have determined Indias nuclear policy. Pressured by an influential domestic scientific community and often incensed by the Wests arrogant demands for non-proliferation in the developing world while maintaining its own arsenal, Indias leaders from Nehru on, each of them ambivalent about nuclear weaponry, have allowed research but never actual testinguntil May 1998. Perkovich takes the reader inside this long history, revealing personalities, institutions, events, and processes generally little known in the West but vital to understanding Indias nuclear policy. He arrives at conclusions that are often startling and controversiallike his suggestion that Indias democracy may have been a stumbling block to nuclear restraint. An excellent study, showing a subtle and balanced understanding of the nuclear predicament of both India and of the developing world in general. Note to editorial Reviewers: India entered the nuclear club in May 1974 and not in May 1998 as suggested by some of your reviews.
Some highlights of the book.
* The term nuclear "haves" and "have-nots" was coined by Homi Bhabha initially and used by others and till date has been central to putting forth our country's opposition to NPT and CTBT.
* University of Chicago's late Prof. Chandrasekhar's refusal to head the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) after the death of patriot Dr. Homi Bhabha.
* One of my disappointment is the author's avoidance in the discussion of the cause of the death of Dr. Homi Bhabha, even though such an incident is beyond the scope of this book. Since Bhabha provided the impetus and leadership during the nuclear program's infancy, I expected the author to throw some light on this issue.
* Vikram Sarabhai's hatred for Nuclear tests is news, especially since he was heading the Atomic Energy commision. As a spaceman it is surprising that he headed the organization in the first place.
* Indira Gandhi's refusal to allow more nuclear tests after 1974 stemmed from her abhorence for anything nuclear after her post-Pokhran I experiences. This is contrary to the popular belief - international pressure.
* Most sections of the book has an objective view of the Indian nuclear scenario except the last few chapters where the author seems to bend towards India signing the CTBT and the NPT. Or atleast implying that India's moral stand on nuclear issue was defeated after the May 98 tests.
* BJP (and its predecessor Jana Sangh) has been the only political party to openly campaign for Nuclear power.

Meticulous research, objective analysis
By SC
George Perkovich has produced a seminal work on India's nuclear weapons program. He analyzes the political, economic, security issues that have contributed to India's decision-making regarding the bomb. George has correctly identified India as being caught in a dilemma for a long time over nuclear weapons testing. India also provides the only example of a nuclear weapons program that was openly debated in a democratic society. This debate (which ranked often very low on the priorities of successive prime ministers who correctly placed socio-economic development as a higher priority) has led to India shifting its position over time -- one from being the first proponent of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty to opposing it due to is discriminatory nature today. It describes how India's opposition to nuclear weapons in the '50s which was perceived as being moralizing in the West, has now changed to embrace weapons since the nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty permanently endorsed the nuclear weapons status of the five declared nuclear powers without any comprehensive, binding time-table for destroying all nuclear weapons -- a position that India objects to as being discriminatory.
A must-read for anyone interested in nuclear weapons proliferation and arms control negotiations today.

An excellent insightful book
By Sulabh Kumar Dhanuka
As an Indian immensely proud of his country's accomplishments and having had to enter multiple debates with other non-Indians in May 1998, I gained a great amount from the book. It is immaculately researched and it seems that Perkovich has left no stone unturned. It goes into such depth and understanding of the Indian polity's psyche as previously unseen from a non-Indian author. Perkovich is not merely narrating a set of events which led to the testing but defending a theory that goes against current understandings of international relations and nuclear non-profileration by setting India as an example. I enjoyed every chapter of the book and hope that current policy makers in the field learn from it. A must read for every Indian interested it their country's policies and others making policy for the rest of the world.

Review
Brick Maxwell, a naval aviator for all seasons, is back again in Robert Gandt's sixth novel, BLACK STAR RISING, which is, as usual, timely, authentic, and reeks of "Blue and Gold." -- Daytona Beach News Journal, 21 January, 2007

Gandt, a former Navy fighter pilot and author of some of the best in fiction and non-fiction aviation writing, has just about perfected the art of involving the reader in his dramatic and adventurous tales of Navy fighter pilots. -- Pacific Flyer, February 2007

About the Author
Robert Gandt is a former Navy fighter/attack pilot who logged more than three hundred day and night carrier landings in the A-4 Skyhawk. At age twenty, he was the youngest aviator in the U.S. Navy. He has been a weapons test pilot, a flight instructor, and an airshow pilot. As a captain for Pan Am and then Delta Air Lines, he was based in Hong Kong, Berlin, San Francisco, and New York, accumulating more than thirty thousand flying hours. In 1995 he returned to his old squadron to fly the F/A-18 Hornet and write about a class of men and women training to fly the Navy's hottest fighter.

Gandt has written a number of novels and nonfiction books. His screen credits include the television series Pensacola: Wings of Gold, as writer and consultant.

He lives with his wife, Anne, and two aerobatic airplanes in Spruce Creek, a flying community in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Black Star Rising by Robert Gandt
By Scott A. Thompson
Black Star Rising the sixth book in a series of Naval aviation thrillers stars Brick Maxwell. Black Star Rising as others in the series is a "stand alone" quick read that any aviation enthusiast or lover of fast paced thrillers is sure to enjoy. The naval combat aviation is taut and exciting. Combine this with covert ground operations, salty in your face leadership and a love interest and you have the makings of a non-stop winning read. I believe that that Bob Gandt continues to improve his craft of writing with each effort and Black Star Rising is his best to date. Make sure you have a few hours when you sit down because putting the book down will be a challenge.

Carrier aviation at its best
By jkm3rd
Bob Gandt's Brick Maxwell series is probably the most authentic naval aviation fiction being produced today. You even vicariously pull several "G's" as Brick's plane gets flung off the carrier's catapult or tries to roll inside his opponent -- it's that authentic. Gandt has a unique way of explaining the obscure naval term or aviator's jargon that keeps you feeling "with it" while not interfering in the slightest with the continuity of the plot.

Gandt's knowledge of contemporaneous world events and his continuous exposure to naval carrier operations help greatly in lending contemporaneous authenticity to each of his novels. Try his works -- you'll love them!

Brick Maxwell and General Zhang Yu mix it up over the South China Sea
By J. Gernetzke
Sit down and shut up as Gandt stuffs us into the seat of the military's finest aerial hardware. This time it is the secret stealth jet - Black Star. The flying sequences are top notch. Even if you are not a shithot Navy pilot, Gandt knows how to draw the reader into the cockpit in a very visceral way. I even find myself grunting on the cat launches! It is precisely why I love his writing. The author has obviously "been there and done that". The plot line has the typical good guy, bad guy sequence and obligatory love interest. Brick Maxwell is the James Bond/Robert Gandt of the U.S. Navy. Good stuff!

Review
"This is a highly practical guide for using cognitive therapy with patients who present challenging problems to clinicians with diverse levels of experience. An excellent hands-on text for graduate-level courses and for novice therapists, it can also fruitfully guide mature practitioners who wish to expand their realm of expertise. Enriched with numerous illuminating case materials, the book will enlighten even the most experienced mental health worker."--Theodore Millon, PhD, DSc, Institute for Advanced Studies in Personology and Psychopathology

"Clinicians have been reporting for some time now that they are seeing increasingly difficult cases in their consulting rooms. Axis I and Axis II comorbidities have become the rule rather than the exception. By systematically addressing these challenges in this clearly written and eminently readable volume, Judith Beck takes cognitive therapy to a new level. This book will be equally useful to students and to experienced therapists."--Glen O. Gabbard, MD, Department of Psychiatry, Baylor College of Medicine

"This excellent book focuses on the art of cognitive therapy. When therapy does not seem to be going well, most clinicians can think of another therapist who they think would fare better. This book teaches you how to become that therapist. Drawing on her vast experience with therapists and clients, Dr. Beck beautifully outlines how to identify and overcome many of the difficulties that can arise in cognitive therapy. As a consequence, therapists will be heartened and more patients will experience the benefits they hope for. Highly recommended reading for novice to highly experienced cognitive therapists."--David M. Clark, DPhil, Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Oxford, United Kingdom

"Judith Beck's first book, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Second Edition: Basics and Beyond, was a godsend to me in my first post when I had little access to CBT supervision....I was keen to read the sequel...'What to Do When the Basics Don't Work,' and I was not disappointed. The book is structured in a similar form to its predecessor, with chapters devoted to each of the essentials of cognitive therapy; formulation, the therapeutic relationship, structuring sessions, identifying cognitions etc....Points are illustrated with case examples and transcripts of sessions, which provide very useful models of exactly how to address tricky issues such as people who keep talking and become controlling whenever a therapist becomes directive....Given the proliferation of cognitive therapy courses, the relative lack of experienced supervisors, and the complexity of cases seen, more and more therapists are likely to feel the need for advice on what to do when the basics don't work. Fortunately, this timely arrival goes a long way to filling that gap." (Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy 2011-07-07)

"An essential educational opportunity for therapists working with varied and challenging adult client populations. It is an empirically supported guide for the helping professional to regain or maintain client-therapist working momentum and for invigorating the therapeutic frame....This book would be a great desk reference for the helping professional or an added reading opportunity for a graduate practice class. The case examples offer the reader pertinent comparatives for real-world dilemmas. Moreover, they clarify the information regarding exigent clients' coping styles, core beliefs, and interfering behaviors....The strength of this text lies in its expanded technical suggestions, born from an empirical model, and put forth by an experienced practitioner....This easy-to-read book is a pragmatic tool for any experienced helping professional or graduate student eager for assistance in working with challenging client populations." (Research on Social Work Practice 2011-07-07)

"An outstanding teaching text which I recommend to all my trainees....The chapter on dysfunctional reactions to patients is particularly good, and to be recommended to all therapists....This book will be much appreciated by therapists working with patients with challenging problems, and is an excellent companion to Cognitive Therapy: Basics and Beyond." (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Book Reviews 2011-07-07)

It is helpful especially if you are interested in CBT.
By Jun Jun
At first, I received a damaged book, but they replaced it to a brand new/good condition right away.
(Thank Amazon and the company for that.)

A lot of good examples and make a MHP to re-think what might be missing or to understand possible thinking process of a client/patient.
Especially when you are dealing a difficult or not progressing situation, this book might be a good resource to read up!

Challenging problems
By George Hedrick
I really liked this book written by one of the best known cognitive therapists in the country. . . .perhaps only her father is a better known cognitive therapist. It is very beneficial to read how Dr. J. Beck approaches challenging problems that arise during therapy. The case examples she gives can give a therapist insight into haow a master therapist works.

Although I liked virtually everything in the book, I particularly liked the chapter on dealing with problems that patients with axis II disorders present. The author also identifies some typical therapist reactions to the challenging problems that some clients exhibit.

I will kepp this book as a reference for a very long time
