Poldark's Cornwal

Anyone who has seen the Masterpiece Theater series "Poldark" or anyone who has read the Poldark Series books by Winston Graham, needs to have a copy of the book 'Poldark's Cornwall'.
Mr. Graham goes into detail about the characters in his stories, the history about their names, for example Ross Poldark's wife was named after the Cornish village of Demelza.
There are pictures and history of several grand Cornish houses that were used in the TV Series. He explores the coast line of Cornwall, which was very central to the stories.
Mr. Graham also tells us how after a lapse of years, thinking he was done writing about the Poldarks, he started thinking about them and wondering what was happening to them in their 'futures'. Thus came a whole new series following their lives from where he had stopped. The characters were as alive to him as they were to many of us.
All in all the book is a wonderful companion for any Poldark fan or fanatic.

Winston Graham's Cornwall

This book has some truly gorgeous photographs of Cornwall, as well as being informative about the history of its towns, the mining districts, and the Cornish character as the author knew it.

I think I understand (perhaps) why the 1-star reviewer was so unhappy with this book. It's not a straightforward book *just* about the Poldark novels and/or the Poldark TV series. The author is very discreet in giving the reader his thoughts about the two television series made from his 8-book "Poldark" saga (at the time this book was written, Mr. Graham hadn't continued the series beyond "The Angry Tide"). The author is very gracious regarding some unfortunate changes that were made by the scriptwriters for the first four books, which were dramatized in Season one of the "Poldark" TV series. Still, Mr. Graham's dissatisfaction with the filming of the first series comes through. The second series was, for him, a happier and better creation.

Mr. Graham's description of how he came to create the fictional characters of Ross Poldark, Demelza, George Warleggan, et al. - who or what in Cornwall, or in Mr. Graham's life, inspired these characters and certain situations from the novels - is more incidental. These stories are worked into Mr. Graham's descriptions of what living in Cornwall has meant in his life and are worked into the historical background of Cornwall that he's providing. In that respect it may have been a misnomer to have called the book "Poldark's" Cornwall, because it's more "Winston's Graham's" Cornwall. (But it wouldn't have sold as many copies with that title!)

Although I can see why the other reviewer would have been disappointed, I don't personally find this book disappointing. In fact, I really enjoyed it. For me it "works" as a companion to the Poldark books, but more importantly as a glimpse into Mr. Graham's working and personal life, into what Cornwall gave to him, and what he (very fortunately) gave back to his readers.

Poldark's Cornwall

I found this book gave me more insight into Mr Graham and his love of Cornwall. The characters were so much apart of the land and the land so much apart of the characters. Nampara, the sea, the beach, the cliffs, the mines, Demelza's flower garden, the places and distances they traveled, I found facinating and wanted to know more. I wanted to be there. In Poldark's Cornwall it took me there. Mr Graham leads us through the area as he experienced it and we can understand where his characters came from. The book is full of new and vintage photos of the area and also the Poldark series filming locations. I encouraged anyone who loves the novels and the Poldark film series to purchase this book.

Simply delicious!

This is a wonderful book that "works" on three different levels:

First, it gives the history of the most important sweets around the world, and traces their lineage and background. For example, I never knew that baklava can be traced to ancient Greek honey cakes, or that American apple pie derives from Dutch tarts.

Second, it provides the ethnological context for each sweet and describes the national, religious, and social significance of many humble desserts. For example, the discussion of cacao in Latin America and chocolate sweets in Mexico that combine ingredients from all over the world, or the detailed description of the "baklava wars" that rocked the Middle East and the Balkans. In that respect the book brings out many interesting connections; for instance reading about the Nepalese halwa made me think of similar Lebanese and Middle Eastern delicacies with similar sounding names. The final result, when I tried it, closely resembles my version of halva. This sent me to the book’s index, trying to figure out the possible route of transmission.

Lastly, and most importantly, the book gives numerous unique and wonderful recipes from every corner of the world. The bibliography is as legitimate as you may find in an academic book, and the Roufs trace every recipe, often to authoritative local chefs or to online sources, and sometimes to the best and most authoritative source of all -somebody's grandma.

If I could change something about the book, I would have the desserts indexed alphabetically -now they are listed under their respective countries/regions of origin. Oh, and wait, about the "baklava wars"...

The intimacies, culture, and history of sweet treats around the world: a food adventure

We like to use the green Michelin guides when we travel - it helps us learn about all of the intimacies, culture, and history of a place. This book is like a Michelin guide for, well, sweet treats around the world. It puts sweet treats in the context of all that is unique and interesting about a country, how things evolved, and why and how we eat the sweets we eat.

More than just an encyclopedia, it is an adventure. I find myself getting immersed in a country (e.g., the Netherlands) and learning about my favorite cookie, the "speculaas", and I have a big "aha!" moment. Then I jump into Australia and learn about the history of the beloved Pavlova (the meringue, cream, and strawberry dessert that I make in the springtime) and that it is named for dancer Anna Pavlova who visited in the 1920s, perhaps representing her tutu and her light as air style.

Very readable ... and so logical to approach sweet treats from an anthropological point of view. I have enjoyed learning about the foods of the places I've been and the places I hope to go. PLUS -- my eyes have been opened about American sweet treats, from Red Velvet cake to M&Ms. I think of myself as a foodie, and this sophisticated yet down-to-earth book is right up my alley (and yes, I have lots of little sticky tabs in the recipes section. The first thing I'm going to make is the lemon souffle that Mrs. Sivertson brought from Norway.)

"Sweet Treats around the World" is a lovely combination of being extensively researched and at the same time, written from the heart. Both my husband and I are really enjoying the book.

Really insightful.

This is an extremely insightful book on the subject. Paul Collier conveys this is a complex subject ill fitted to the simple binomial outcomes (yes it is good; no it is bad) adopted by the media, politicians, business lobbyists, and even economists. The issue is not whether migration is good or bad but what is the optimal rate of migration for a specific country. He makes a case that there is an optimal migration level or rate. And, if we leave migration to itself, it will exceed the optimal level and eventually hurt.

The social effects of migration follow an inverse-U shape, with gains from moderate migration and losses from high migration. Moderate migration is liable to confer overall social benefits, whereas sustained rapid migration would risk substantial costs. Also, a low-density country such as Canada and Australia can accommodate a far greater rate of migration than high-density countries such as Western European ones.

Moderate migration has modestly positive economic effects on the indigenous population in the medium term. Any long-term effects are negligible. In contrast, sustained rapid migration lowers the living standard of the indigenous population, both through wage effect and due to the need to share scarce public capital.

Collier builds an elegant model that explains the rate of migration from one country to another. The rate of migration is determined by: 1) the width of the income gap (the wider it is the faster the migration rate from the low-income to high-income country); 2) the level of income in country of origin (the lower the income the higher the emigration rate); and 3) the size of the diaspora in the host country (the larger the diaspora the higher the immigration rate into the host country).

The diaspora is one key variable in migration. The larger it is, the more it drives migration into the host country. Also, the greater the distance in income, culture, language between the two countries (of origin vs host) the more likely a diaspora will form and grow rapidly. But, the more established and large is a diaspora the lower the rate of absorption of the migrants into the indigenous culture. The migrants will behave not as migrants seeking to integrate themselves into a new culture but instead as settlers with no desire to integrate themselves. Collier often makes this critical distinction between "migrants" and "settlers." The migrants will speak their own language, and often not speak the language of the host. They will often reject the culture and norms of the host and in some cases even attempt to reject the host laws (Muslims migrants in Europe seeking Sharia laws). Diasporas mechanics cause them to literally grow forever. That is unless specific policy measures to reduce migration and increase the absorption rate are taken.

Collier refers to the intriguing work of Robert Putnam, a leading social scientist, that indicates that the greater the proportion of immigrants in a community the lower the level of trust between immigrants and the indigenous population, but also the lower the level of trust within the indigenous population (a surprising result). High trust leads to high absorption rate. Low trust leads to low absorption rate and rising diasporas. The migrants turn into settlers.

The US has been far more successful at integrating migrants to its own culture than Europe. In Europe multiculturalism has risen whereby migrants are resistant to integration and insistent on maintaining their own culture thereby not adopting the local norms, not speaking the host country's language, not participating in the labor force, and even not accepting the country's laws. He quotes, Angela Merkel as stating that multiculturalism has been an utter failure. However, the cultural and linguistic gap between emigrants and host countries is far wider in Europe vs the US. This is typified by migrants' Islamic fundamentalism that affects Western Europe much more than the US. Multiculturalism combined with generous welfare systems (the European situation) lead to lower absorption rate based on the research from Ruud Koopmans.

Should be on every politicians desk

I find it very strange that I should be the first to review a book published in 2013. This is not only strange but also very unfortunate since this book should be on every politicians desk and read by everyone who has a view on migration. Why? Because Professor Collier manages to in under 300 pages tell us where we are in the scientific world on the very important subject of migration. Today in 2015 Europe is in a crisis mode and are desperately trying to handle a flood of refugees and migrants and it is not going well. Had people in power read this book in 2013 it is quite possible that we would have been in a far better managed situation than we are in today.

The Question of migration is a political mine-field and there are few subjects that will engage citizens as much as when it is not handled well. The Rise of fringe political parties in Europe but also elsewhere is one of the signs of this. Paul Collier manages to guide us through this mine-field without stepping an any holy toes and gives us a structure for how to discuss this issue. I don't think that I have ever made so many notes from a book as I have done from this one.

For a social science book it is very well written and an easy read. Almost all aspects on migration are dealt with possibly one exception. I would have liked to see a discussion on regional differences. Having talked to a number of people working in the migration receiving end you will almost all the time hear what a difference there is to receive migrants from different countries or cultures. The Approach to deal with them differs a lot depending on who they are.

Reading the book you also realize how few outside of the science community that really has facts behind there views. Migration is a question that is 90 % political and just 10 % based on facts. This book could fix that. But you have to read it.

Informative, balanced analysis on migration's impact and a reasonable argument on when it should be controlled

Despite a mostly UK-centric narrative, this dense (but succinct) treatment of migration - mostly framed in the context of migration's impact on the host, migrant and the society of origin - provides an excellent review and critique of socio-economic theories/philosophies that have shaped views on immigration. Collier methodically explains the key factors that are likely to influence the migration rate and then starts delineating the impact on
all parties concerned. The discussion around the impact of the size of diaspora, assimilative tendencies and income gap differentials are interesting and provide a reasonable framework to think about motives than rely on politician/media-created generalisms that tend to appeal to emotions than reason. Throughout the book, Collier manages to provide a mostly impartial and consistent view of migration and its effect before making a strong ethical case for why a society can (and should) control migration.

Collier's examples typically refer to the low-skill migration and his views on high-skill migration is nuanced and guided more by ethical arguments than utilitarian arguments (the very same ones he seemed to use to rationalize low-skill migration). Readers of a particular political persuasion can of course find cherrypick some observations to justify their view, but the relatively reduced focus on high-skill migration is an opportunity lost to add more clarity to the discussion. While much has been written on IT sector in the US, the medical skill migration to UK (and US) poses ethical and economic arguments far more pronounced than any other high-skill sector. Collier could have devoted more space to address high-skill migration.

Collier also focuses on country-to-country migrations;regional migrations such as those seen in larger countries is not covered in this discussion. Nor are examples of societies that see significant immigration and emigration at the same time (low-skill immigrants from neighboring countries to India - and Indians emigrating to UK/US) are covered extensively. It would've been interesting to see how Collier's framework will adapt to such examples - though extreme examples like Dubai is used extensively in discussions.

The pedantic style makes for relatively difficult reading - but it is a complicated topic and Collier did a great service not to oversimplify. Nevertheless, the book is very well-edited with virtually no repetition of core ideas or examples, or self-references. A very informative read.
