High Quality

While flipping through this "mook" (as it apparently is called), it brought back childhood memories of browsing my Dad's Popular Science (or was it Popular Mechanics?) magazines. I like the smaller, "bookish" form factor as it makes it feel more - well, uhh - like a book. Since this is a magazine, I was curious to see how many ads I was going to have to wade through. I was pleasantly surprised to discover there were hardly any; I hope they keep them to a minimum going forward.

The "how to" articles are very well done, with a great amount of step-by-step information in both visual and written detail. My only problem now is time. Every project looked like so much fun it was disappointing to realize I wouldn't be able to do them all before the next issue would arrive and give me a whole new set of cool projects. =) My personal time management issues aside, Make is high-quality publication, top to bottom.

What's not to love? The 9"x7" book format is much better than the typical magazine size, all the articles are interesting, and almost no fluff.

My only dislikes: The body type is really small, and some of the sidebars are set even smaller. Us older geeks really need a slightly larger font. I'm not a big fan of body copy set in sans-serif either, but can live with it.

I subscribed, PLEASE ship this in a poly bag. The Post Office can to cruel things to a magazine.

I've been looking for this!

I stay on the lookout for the "Boys" guides, you know, those old books dealing with science and technology (a hundred years old, perhaps, but still quite educational). I've looked into a few more modern magazines, such as Popular Mechanics (good for what it is), Wired (mostly a culture thing, I guess), and 2600 (fine, if my goal was to electronically knock over a Target store or something).

This is what I was after: a 'book' series dealing with hacking together hardware, making stuff work, and making stuff work better.

Now my 'to do' list has grown substantially, with a bunch of things I really hadn't thought of doing!

About the Author
Scott Hunter Stark has been involved in professional audio since the late 1970�s. He started out designing custom loudspeaker systems and operating systems for live performances at a time when then-existing commercial systems could not live up to the demands of increasingly larger audiences with increasingly discerning ears. In the 1980�s and 90�s he was active in providing audio, staging and lighting services to a wide variety of performance events in clubs, theaters, outdoor events and more recently houses of worship in the eastern United States. Throughout his career Stark found a repeated need for presenting plain-English explanations of how sound systems worked, particularly for aspiring engineers struggling with important concepts of physics and sound properties. He translated his years of working experience and knowledge into print with the first edition of Live Sound Reinforcement, later released in 1996 by MixBooks. After years of working in the sound system and engineering business, Stark attended law school and worked with several Internet ventures. Today he is a sound system consultant in the Washington, DC area where he currently resides.

Technical or NOT technical tips on good sound!

I received a copy of this book when I was preparing the curriculum for a college course I taught as an adjunct professor for two years. I believe it gave my students not only a good classroom study book, but also a useful reference book for the "real-world" after graduation! Scott Stark gives great rule-of-thumb knowledge, as well as deeper technical fundamentals behind the knob turning and fader moving decisions that every sound engineer will face at the helm of a live sound reinforcement system, no matter whether for 100 or 100,000 listeners!

About the Author

Andrew Baldwin, BSc(Hons), MSc, PhD, CEng, FICE, Eur Ing, has extensive construction industry and academic experience. Following a career in the civil engineering and construction industries that included planning and scheduling for a number of major construction projects, he commenced an academic career at Loughborough University, UK, where he is now Emeritus Professor in Construction Management. He is also a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Chongqing University, China, where he is a Co-Director of the National Centre for International Research of Low-Carbon and Green Buildings, a position funded under the national ‘One Thousand Experts’ programme.

David Bordoli, BSc, MSc, FCIOB, MAPM, ACIArb, is an extremely experienced planning professional who began his career as a planning engineer with construction contractors then worked as a consultant, providing contractual advice, preparing time delay claims, reports for adjudications, arbitrations and litigation, and undertaking expert witness appointments in delay and disruption disputes in construction and engineering. He is now a Director of Driver Trett and has recently spent most of his time working on overseas projects, particularly in South Africa.
