Excellent Text on Plasma Discharge Fundamentals

This text was used in my graduate electrical engineering course on gas breakdown physics offered at my school (a major U.S. technical university). The fundamentals of electron / ion generation in various electric field configurations and pressure conditions are covered in analytical detail, including all of the essential breakdown mechanisms which have been studied in literature. Also included is a great deal of experimental data useful for practical laboratory experiments with plasmas. The text is written at a level which should be useful for early graduate students in engineering or physics (beyond the level of F. Chen, Introduction to Plasma Physics), although it comes easier depending on the student's background in plasma physics, statistical mechanics, or circuit theory. This book covers essentially the same material as the much older text by E. Nasser (Fundamentals of Gaseous Ionization and Plasma Electronics), but is much cheaper (

On the shoulders of the sociologist who stood before him, Gergen’s An Invitation to Sociological Construction shows how systems work and influence the people surrounded by those systems; it is an enriching experience for the readers through both it context and content. Its context is educational and transformational and its content is understandable to inexperienced or experienced readers on concepts related to sociology.

Gergen takes his views one step further than did other contemporary sociologists. Gergen shows how language influences sociology; words influence sociology (not only what we say, but how we say it). Gergen advocates for a comprehensive awareness that all do not necessarily have the capacity to attain. Looking at the world through a theoretical sociological lens, Gergen is able to utilize his previous work in Psychology and Sociology to explain many of the paradigms we see in the world today.

I enjoy the way that Gergen constructed his analyses; it feels like Gergen is having a conversation with the reader, rather than just a lecture-method of authorship. This is a book that I will remember for a long time, and will certainly keep on my bookshelf, as Gergen’s work can be extrapolated to encompass a variety of sociological and psychological concepts (ones he specifically discussed and others he did not). Gergen is an intellectual, a professor, and researcher-- this particular work will (arguably) become one of the books that Kenneth Gergen is most known for having written.

Deep Thoughts

Transcendentalism was the first truly American philosophical movement and this nice (and cheap) edition collects some of the more canonical pieces of Transcendentalism's two greatest expounders, Emerson and Thoreau. It is ideal for students and classrooms as each piece contains a glossary that clears up outdated, or difficult, allusions and words.
Simplicity and self reliance were the two greatest tenets of transcendentalism and the essays in this collection certainly pound on that theme. However, two of the Thoreau selections (Civil Disobedience & Walden) touch on the purpose of nature in our lives and our role / relationship to our government. Both are massively relevant to almost any time and it is the universality of their themes that make them necessary reading.
Emerson and Thoreau were clearly great and original thinkers, and so one can get past their hypocrisy and numerous double standards throughout their writing. Reading the transcendentalists forces one to think about themselves.
To that, all I can say is awesome.

Transcendentalism

This book is amazing. Not only does it teach the reader complex vocabulary but it also teaches the reader how to read a happy life. It connects many general topics together and constantly stresses the importance of individualism. If you can understand this book, it will be great. If you can't, do everything possible to understand it, even if it means reading it with a dictionary in front of you. It's worth it!

Great Book

This is really a great book. I have been playing violin for 40 years, orchestras, bluegrass bands, Mark O'Connor's fiddle camp etc. and this book taught me more about Grappelli's style than have learned any where. The book starts off with the basics of the Grappelli bowings, shows typical licks, then puts the licks into the context of transcribed swing jazz standards that Grappelli would play which you can play along with on the included CD. I have other books that I have bought through the years on Grappelli's style and this is the best. This is not a get rich quick scheme, you will have to put in the time, practice diligently, memorize the licks, play the music and you will absorb this gypsy jazz style. If you want to learn how to play like Steph, buy this book, you won't be sorry.

Good Stuff!

Once again, Tim Kliphuis (say it Klip-house) delivers the goods. Lots of Grappelli licks and runs, presented in a clear, easy-to-understand way. Not for the beginner, better for intermediate to advanced players, as you will need to be able to shift to 3rd and 5th positions to execute some of the runs. The only drawbacks to the book are that his explanations on how to use the licks don't really give you the understanding of how Grappelli would use them, but I expect that would take up another book, and also the licks span the early years (which I really want to get that sound) to the last years, when he had a more modern sound. Still if you want to learn, this is a great book.

Super useful gyspy jazz licks

This is the best book of licks I've ever found. It's laid out simply and is easy to follow. The licks are tasty and are already spicing up my playing. Even though I play mandolin rather than violin, it works well.
