About the Author

DR. EDWARD G. NAWY is a distinguished profession in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. He has been active in the ACI and PCI since 1949 and is internationally recognized for his extensive work in the fields of reinforced and prestressed concrete, particularly in the areas of crack and deflection control. Dr. Nawy has published in excess of 160 papers in numerous technical journals worldwide and is the author of Reinforced Concrete: A Fundamental Approach, 4th Edition, �2000, published by Prentice Hall, Fundamentals of High Performance Concrete, 2nd Edition, �2000, published by John Wiley and Sons, and Concrete Construction Engineering Handbook, �1998, published by CRC Press. He is the recipient of several major awards, including the Henry L. Kennedy Award of the ACI, honorary professorship, Nanjing Institute of Technology, and is Evaluator for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). He is licensed Professional Engineer in the States of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California and Florida, and has been a consultant in structural engineering to agencies throughout the United States.

Sloppy, unorganized and unhelpful

Nawy's book doesn't seem to have the student in mind. Each concept is presented in very brief terms and is then supplemented by several examples which have complications in them that were not discussed, leaving the student constantly wondering "why does he do that?" Moreover, the formulas in the examples often contain only numbers, forcing the student to hunt down their sources. Often, the numbers won't have a source. Nawy obviously knows a lot about the subject, but he doesn't seem very interested in effectively passing that knowledge on.

Not a learning tool

I have used this book to teach Prestressed Concrete. I chose it because it is the only book that's updated to the latest ACI 318 requirements.
The table of contents covers all the important topics that an engineer would want to learn; unfortunately the style is dogmatic. The equations are not properly derived or explained (some eqs are not derived at all); no physical understanding is conveyed. Some examples actually have the wrong solution (ex. elastic shortening losses). It is impossible to learn from this book. It is obvious that the book was not put together with care or attention to detail, or to be of any use to present or future engineers. Its educational value is close to zero. This is a perfect example of what a book should NOT aspire to be (a sellable list of sexy and tantalizing topics, lacking essence).

In chapter six, you'll learn how to write programs that can make smart decisions about how to handle data and how to make your programs follow complex rules. Exercises: filtering genes based on multiple criteria.
In chapter seven, you'll learn an incredibly powerful tool for working with patterns in text - regular expressions - and how to use it to search in DNA and protein sequences. Exercises: filtering accession names and calculating restriction fragment sizes.
In chapter eight, you'll learn how to store huge amounts of data in a way that can still allows it to be retrived very efficiently. This allows simplification of much of the code from previous chapters. Exercises: translating DNA sequences to protein.
In chapter nine, you'll learn how to make your Python programs work in harmony with existing tools, and how to polish up your programs so that they're ready for other people to use. Exercises: counting k-mers, binning DNA sequences by length.

Dr. Martin Jones has been teaching biologists to write software for over five years and has taught everyone from postgraduates to PIs. He is currently Lecturer in Bioinformatics at Edinburgh University.

The most useful guide to Python I've found

I'm currently working my way through this guide and am finding it enormously useful. I've tried a few Python books, and this is by far the best for me. It jumps straight into the things biologists generally need Python for - creating and manipulating sequence files for example. For all other guides I've tried, I've had to wade through chapters of less relevant material before I get to anything this useful. This book is also easy to read, the concepts are well explained, and the exercises at the end of the chapter are nicely challenging. I would definitely recommend this to any biologist.

Life-changing

Great, great book. I think this is the perfect book for any biologist to who wants to start learning to code with Python. Right away the author has you writing programs that are actually useful for biologists (making a reverse-compliment of a dna strand, calculating A-T content, finding restriction enzyme sites, ect). I didn't know a command-line from a hole in the ground when I first opened up this book, and mere days later I was impressing my colleagues with my own DNA analysis programs. I actually have this book to thank for easing me into programming which is now something I do everyday as part of my profession.This book is definitely unique for biologists in that it has you learning some aspects of python that are useful for biological applications right away- techniques which are normally several chapters down the road in general programming books. That being said, if you want to get serious about coding, because this book doesn't go over all areas of python, you will be well-served by also getting a second general python programming introduction book that goes over stuff this book does not cover.

This was a fun read. I really liked the descriptions of the dragons and other characters. The author created characters that were appealing to know. The glossary provided was great to insure an understanding of a world that the author was describing. I look forward to her next novel.

Absolute nonsense!

This 'book' and its contents are nothing more than pure fantasy concocted by a Paranormal group that have not done anything and never will do anything to further investigation into the moors murders case.
I have had the great misfortune to have been contacted by this group before this nonsense was published and I was asked to take them seriously. Having spent 50 years living with this case and going over the known facts countless times I can state that this pathetic attempt to gain an insight into more facts and to get into the head of Brady is one of the worst examples of self-publicity and total rubbish I have ever come across.
I have even had cause to contact the Greater Manchester Police about the anguish these people cause to myself and my family (I am the brother of Keith Bennett, the only victim of Brady and Hindley not to have found.) The latest quote I have from the police is 'We all share the same views of the Worsley Paranormal Society and again they have been politely but clearly told where they stand and informed of our views on the lack of legitimacy of their visions/musings/opinions.'

This group of misled and misinformed individuals still trawl the internet claiming, firstly, that they have the support of the police and then they state that they cannot understand why they are not taken seriously! Nobody with any sort of understanding of this case and the details of this case will ever take them seriously, the sooner they take that FACT in the better for all concerned.

A different insight into the Moors Murders

A book which obviously is bothering people ? especially ones who have never even read it yet make a comment. The Secret Key to The Moors Murders is a book that is showing why Ian Brady was influenced by things he read and watched like films. He was living in a time warp and acted out much in a fantasy world he created. By using History and historical people he admired, like Oliver Cromwell, writers and poets and especially the Industrial Revolution,he was able to map the areas to this and create a puzzle field where he buried clues to what this was all about. The writers and Geniuses like James Joyce, W B Yeats, T S Eliot and the surrealism Artists of Paris.. I explain why I am able to see these .. then I have gone deeper into the Occult and Crowley and the areas he visited to see why these were important to him and possible sites for other victims. Its complex and no wonder he has been able to hide behind all of this and keep his game going. Even the names of people he writes to mean more to him, like Cowley and even the name Bennett..
