The Devil's Arithmetic

Very good book. I used it with my middle school alternative students. The book really held their attention. It went right along with our history lesson on WWII. The book also went along with a documentary we showed about the Holocaust. The audio CD made reading the book with my students much easier as they were able to connect with the main character Hannah,. It also generated discussions amongst the students. I would highly recommend this book to middle school teachers and students.

In the past there have been a series of attacks on white and Asian women in a local neighborhood, and the police was under pressure to solve the cases. Tyrone Briggs was charged with aggravated assault in the crimes. Tyrone Briggs was a 19 year old high school basketball star who, at the time of the crimes, was living in the Yesler Terrace. Since the attacks had all happened in the same area, during the same early morning hours, they were considered the work of a serial attacker. Because of the close proximity of the attacks to the hospital, they became known jointly as the "Harborview Rape Case." Harborview Medical Center was next to a public housing project "The Yesler Terrace" run by the city. Tyrone Briggs had lived in Yesler Terrace with his parents, brothers, and sister for about a dozen years and was living there at the time of the attacks. Hundreds of young black men lived there, and the police were picking up those between the ages of fourteen and thirty for questioning. A police stakeout was conducted in the neighborhood to try to catch the assailant during this time. The general description given by the witnesses (most of whom were the victims of the assaults) at the time of the attacks describe a man who did not fit the descriptions of Tyrone Briggs, and the police officers had no reason to detain him. When the trial began the prosecutor seemed adamant that Tyrone Briggs was the attacker of those women. The frustrating injustice of the whole case made the Briggs family blood boil. Joanne Spencer couldn't imagine how it felt to be Tyrone Briggs, star high school basketball player now locked up in prison for something he didn't do.

A real life who done it that will break your heart

This true story told from the viewpoint of a juror from the first trial of the teenager accused of being the Harborview Rapist, is full of suspense, legal strategy, victims represented by the prosecution, by the defense and abandoned entirely because pursuing their attackers might jeopardize the case against the teen, Tyrone Briggs. It is also full of people whose gallantry will break your heart. Tyrone Brigg's family, the lawyers who gave it their all with almost no compensation and Joanne Spencer and a few other jurors who could easily have washed their hands. They had done their duty.

Joanne had never looked racism in the face before. She had a lot to learn and put herself into situation after situation in which she had to be uncomfortable. And she continued to do it day after day for years. For me it was familiar territory. This story is full of facts that tend to destroy our faith in the justice system. It is also full of love and dedication and selflessness that can restore the most hardened cynic into a renewed faith in human nature.

Ramet places emphasis on the failure of the state-building project and the absence of political legitimation, rather than on ineluctable or abstract historical forces. Ramet (Norwegian Univ. of Science and Technology) is a distinguished leading scholar on Yugoslavia who has made important contributions to the substantial literature on that unhappy land. This first-rate volume is a substantially enlarged, rewritten edition of Nationalism and Federalism in Yugoslavia, 1962, 1991 (CH, Feb'93, 30―3476). It is a must read posing big questions, e.g., why Yugoslavs have repeatedly failed to create an effective legitimate state structure and rule of law. Ramet rejects the myth, unfortunately widespread in the West, that the driving force has been ethnic conflict and ancient hatreds. Her work complements the study by V. P. Gagnon Jr., The Myth of Ethnic War: Serbia and Croatia in the 1990s (CH, Sep'05, 43―0597), by focusing on elite behavior. While she looks at prior state―building efforts (1918―29), she concentrates chiefly on Tito's Yugoslavia. Nearly half of this thick volume covers the post, 1989 period through KFOR and Kosovo. The inclusion of 150 pages of notes and more than 25 pages of bibliography underscore the deep research of this work, which concludes with a short chapter on the separate paths of Slovenia, Macedonia, and Croatia. Sabrina P. Ramet is Professor of Political Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norway, and Senior Associate of the Centre for the Study of Civil War of the Peace Research Institute in Oslo (PRIO). She is the author of eight previous books, including Nationalism and Federalism in Yugoslavia (IUP, 1992).
