The planetarium is closed for repairs, so the Magic School Bus blasts off on a real tour of the solar system. After their previous field trips, the children in Ms. Frizzle's class are all blase about such things; as they land on the Moon, Venus, and Mars, and fly by the other planets and the Sun, they comment on what they see, generate a blizzard of one- or two-sentence reports on special topics and--even while Ms. Frizzle is temporarily left behind in the asteroid belt--crack terrible jokes ("Could Saturn take a bath? Yes, but it might leave a ring!"). Although some of the information is radically simplified--people are said to float in space because "without a large mass nearby . . . they do not have weight"--Cole keeps the narrative specific without burdening it with loads of facts. Degen's fresh, energetic illustrations complement the breathless pace perfectly. Basic story is good - extra information makes it hard to read to little ones

A fun story that follows the first episode of the first season of MSB pretty closely, but the extra factual information/dialogue in the margins make it hard to read to ages 4-6 (especially if they suspect you're leaving something out!). It might be more enjoyable for ages 9-10, who can benefit from that info and can read at their leisure.

geeky and intellectual, and wonderfully un-American!

This is a great, almost un American book in that kids are told that it's OK, even wonderful and wondrous to be science geeks, be curious. Love the Frizz when she says "take chances, get messy, make mistakes," and encourages her students to explore. In a society that elevates sports and violence for boys, and beauty and cattiness for girls, this series stands out for encouraging gender neutral intellectualism and academic achievement. My geeky 5 year old can't get enough, having finally found fictional characters that reflect her and encourage her. Factual substance-wise, I as a 40 year old have learned tons.

comic-book format for learning

I am impressed with the way the comic-book style of this book can really teach. The pages have the storyline text, and then plenty of puns and quips, some dialog, associated reasearch projects done by the class, charts, and great illustrations.

This is a series, so to get you familiar, Ms. Frizzle is a teacher who takes her class on field trips. Their school bus can change and transport them anywhere, so the field trips end up being real experiences. The books do a tremendous job of carrying the story and the visuals.

As a mom, the puns do little for me, but my seven-year-old really likes them and repeats them. Good enough.

About the Author
Shirley Jackson was born in California in 1916. When her short story The Lottery was first published in the New Yorker in 1948, readers were so horrified they sent her hate mail; it has since become one of the most iconic American stories of all time. Her first novel, The Road Through the Wall, was published in the same year and was followed by Hangsaman, The Bird's Nest, The Sundial, The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle, widely seen as her masterpiece. In addition to her dark, brilliant novels, she wrote lightly fictionalized magazine pieces about family life with her four children and her husband, the critic Stanley Edgar Hyman. Shirley Jackson died in 1965.

A "must" for Shirley Jackson fans!

Why is Shirley Jackson so often miscast as a horror writer? "Sundial" is a rich, tapestried, multi-layered work by an enormously versatile author. Those new to Ms. Jackson will be mesmerized by her characterizations, rich narrative, and subtle, unnerving detail. Those familiar with her work will recognize in "Sundial" the "undercurrent of desperation" found in her best stories, supernatural elements a la "Hill House," the complexity of "Bird's Nest," the quirkiness of "We Have Always Lived in the Castle," and the wit (and laugh-out-loud humor) of "Life Among the Savages."
"Sundial" succeeds on so many levels that a cursory summarization would be an injustice to the book. I myself am going to cogitate on its existential aspects; that is, a group of people who grate on each other forced to spend their lives together (Sartre's "No Exit").
As the character of the schoolteacher says, "This is a real real real real real real real real adventure!" It is also a must must must must read for Shirley Jackson fans!

It's the end of the world as we know it

Even as great a writer as Shirley Jackson has to have a worst book (worst being a relative term, of course), and The Sundial would seem to be Jackson's. The story never had a strong Jackson feel to it because the characters were fairly shallow and unworthy of this reader's sympathy. As an outcast myself, I expect to find at least one troubled soul with which to identify and commiserate when I read Jackson. I initially had trouble distinguishing between the different characters because none of them were very deeply developed. While the occasional gripe or maudlin sentiment caught my attention, I found that I did not care for or about any of the dozen or so individuals described here. The Sundial is basically a weird end-of-the-world novel; the young Mr. Halloran has just died, and his mother now assumes the coveted role of head of household (due to her own husband's infirmities). As she begins to assert her authority and basically throw a few people out of "her" house, old Aunt Fanny encounters the ghost of her father, who warns her that the world is about to end, but that he will protect everyone who stays in the house. As several people begin to believe the truth of the premonition (including Mrs. Halloran), everyone is allowed to remain there. The number is increased by an obnoxiously loud friend of the Mrs. Halloran's and her two daughters, a strange girl sent by her father for temporary housing, and a gentleman whose background escapes me. These people, as might be expected, do not get along with each other very well at all. Mrs. Halloran, born of a low station, increasingly annoys her companions by assuming a dictatorial air, eventually insisting on wearing a crown. The novel leads up to the fateful day when the prophecy is supposed to be fulfilled.
While there are elements of humor in the conversations and interactions of characters who dislike one another as much as these do, there is no deep psychological meaning to be gleaned from the story. No character strikes me as real or more than remotely human, and the general attitude expressed as to the imminent end of the world is a much different reaction than I would expect of anyone. I have been reluctant to see other Jackson novels end, but I had no trouble putting this book down once I turned the final page. For someone wondering what Shirley Jackson is all about, I would not suggest reading this novel as an introduction; this one really does not fit the mold of her other major works. A Jackson fan such as myself will want to read The Sundial, of course, simply because Shirley Jackson wrote it, and it is quite likely that some will get more out of this book than I did.

Not to be Missed

I am a life-long fan of Shirley Jackson and, especially, "The Haunting of Hill House." It is only recently that I have had the opportunity to read many of her works which, for some unknown reason, are out-of-print. "The Sundial" is, at the same time, psychologically unnerving and immensely humorous. It is quite disturbing to read about the rantings of Aunt Fanny and the schemes of Fancy. But, at the same time, to imagine this handful of awful people who hate each other unendingly having to spend eternity with one another is incredibly funny. I must admit, I was a little disappointed when the book ended, but I realize that it must have been in the master plan of the author to leave the reader without the information which would have unnecessarily cleared up questions which will instead linger on the mind.

About the Author
Karen E. Woodin earned her M.S. in Applied Statistics at Western Michigan University and her Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the School of Public Health at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Dr. Woodin has over 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, including more than 20 years at The Upjohn Company/Pharmacia (now part of Pfizer), where she worked in the areas of biostatistics, clinical trial operations and monitoring and drug safety. She currently works as an independent consultant specializing in clinical trial operations, good clinical practices (GCPs) and standard operating procedures (SOPs). She works with investigative sites, sponsors and IRBs, and also develops and teaches courses in these areas. She is the author of The CRA's Guide to Monitoring Clinical Research, also published by CenterWatch. Dr. Woodin is a long-time member of the Drug Information Association (DIA) and has served on the DIA board of directors and as chair of the Steering Committee for the Americas. She has also developed and taught courses for DIA. She is a recipient of the DIA Outstanding Service award.

Excellent resource

I've been working as a Clinical Study Coordinator for 3 years now and I thought I might know a lot the information in here already, and some I did, but much I didn't. Or I knew the surface of a topic but this gave me a WAY deeper understanding of the subject. Also, this has an invaluable part about FDA audits and they have sample forms and checklists in the back which I love. Plus there are a lot of organizations and websites referenced that after years of doing searches to find research info I'd never come across. I love this book!

Not worth the money, other more helpful resources that are more cost efficient on the market

I was kind of disappointed as I ordered the Monitoring Book (CRA's guide) and found that more helpful. This book has about half of the information that is useful. The other half are regulations that you can get anywhere else for free. Kind of pricey just to have this information in one resource. I would not have ordered this had I known this beforehand.

Jana and her brother spent thousands of hours combing the bayous in a flat-bottom aluminum boat, studying the natural habitat of many birds, nutria and alligators. Jana has never stumbled across a mystery or a ghost like her heroines, but she's still hopeful. She now resides in Dallas, Texas, with the most spoiled Sheltie in the world.

should hv been better

Am I the only one who realized the mistakes in the facts of the characters? Luc worked for the DEQ in the first 3 books, not the DEA. Big difference between Department of Environmental Quality and Drugs. Also, 2/3rds of the way thru the book when they go the cemetery Colt is with them, in the next chapter they r hiding the key so that he doesn't find out they took it...WHAT? I liked these books which is why I downloaded the 4th in the series. I'm not even finished with it yet but it has me doubting what I read. PLEASE find a better editor, I am with the other person who said that they didn't like to edit as they r reading.

Helena Henry is back wreaking havoc on Mudbug, and funny as ever! Love the new characters, Colt and Jadyn, and so glad that the series will continue with them. Great twists at the end I did not see coming. I read The Helena Diaries right before I picked this fourth book up, and it was a great refresher for those who haven't read the first book in the series in a while.

This is a gem of a book as the previous reviewer stated from beginners to more advanced. The Key words ,ie; memorable descriptive imagery, is given as well as further information because in my opinion some will need further explanation.

ex; " Moon in Aries- (as a mother) The vigorous individual."

Well many might want to have a little more input as to what the author means be "vigorous", and so it is given. Also the keywords are not just for the rudimentary planet, signs & houses but the planets IN the houses and the planet energies combined in aspect. Also included are positive and negative manifestaions.

I especially like the endearing method of apect interpretation in the back of the book. There is a lot of knowledge condensed here for your money here from wise and learned practitioners. A very good resource.

Wonderful thumbnail astrological analysis

This little book cuts to the astrological chase in a concise, clear, exciting style. Banzhaf is a German-language writer (in translation here) whose clipped-to-the-point descriptions of all the basic astrological positions and combinations are steeped in a deep knowledge not only of the subject at hand, but of Jungian psychology, classical mythology, numerology, and Tarot. While many authors who have written valuable books on chart analysis carry on at great lengths to discuss each element of the horoscope, Banzhaf is in every case clear, concise, illuminating, and almost best of all, he supplies us with brief, pithy, mythology or psychology-derived titles for nearly every combination here--titles such as Moon in Aries--the Amazon. While this may sound simplistic on the surface, Banzhaf's deep knowledge of mythology, tarot, and depth psychology make his labels instantly clear and applicable--and separates him from many of the light-weight pop-mythologists who have littered the literary landscape in past years with their myth-lite treatises on Goddesses, etc. Astrology as a symbolic language is subject to positive and negative readings, and Banzhaf is careful to supply both the positive and negative polarities of all situations. This is a mature, insightful, serious thinker and writer, and I wish more of his books were available in English. I'd recommend this one without reservation for anyone interested in Astrology, beginner through expert.

As a professional astrologer I can wholeheartedly reccomend this magnificent extremely well organized book.It provides excellent astrological interpretations and it is a book that can be especially valuable for reference.This astrology book provides many accurate meanings for planets in signs,planets in houses,and planets in aspect.Also,there are interpretations relating to the natal moon's nodes,the ascendant,descendant,midheaven,and the imum coeli."Key Words For Astrology" can be a great addition to one's personal library.There is a lot of precious info provided in this reasonably priced publication. Yes,you get alot of value for your money.I like it so much that I bought several copies.This book is great for beginners, intermediate or advanced students,and professionals involved with astrology.The authors did a fantastic job and it is a solid five star book in my humble opinion.

About the Author
Mike Grigsby has been involved in marketing science for more than 25 years. He was marketing research director at Millward Brown and has held leadership positions at Hewlett-Packard and the Gap. With a wealth of experience at the forefront of marketing science and analytics, he now heads up the strategic retail analysis practice at Targetbase. Mike is also known for academic work, having written articles for academic and trade journals and taught at graduate and undergraduate levels. He is a regular speaker at trade conventions and seminars.

This is a fairly specialised book, seeking to provide a clear guide to the customer analytical challenges that are faced by retail companies who may wish to target, segment and exploit their customer base.

It seems to achieve what it sets out to do, providing an informative, authoritative and quite accessible guide in the process. The area is quite complex, changing and challenging, so anything that can help marshal one’s thoughts and guide through this area can be very appreciated. If you are not already looking into customer analytics, it can possibly inspire you into considering this for your company’s operations too.

Despite it being a fairly complex subject with so many variables and areas of consideration, the author has done a good job in making this fairly readable, understandable and modular. It is not dumbed-down and delivers key information in a format you can consume at your own pace.

Looking through the book, it was good that the author took up many matters such as how unique data can be and how it may be used, assuming that there is demand now as well as considering what future demand may be. The definition of a retailer is kept very tight; so that Apple is still a manufacturer despite having retail stores and an online presence as, to quote the wonderful phrase used by the author, it does not “waltz the double-edged dance of the cost of supply and factor inputs that traditional retailers tango with.”

Warning! If mathematics can make your head spin, you may need to prepare for a shock or two or drag in a colleague. It got very figures-heavy without warning… It might have been nice to have a little more hand-holding and explanation around the figures for those who are more of a “words person”.

A thought-provoking book that may help you see the wood between the trees.

this was better than his last book! a little deeper, a little wider--still accessible. he thinks he's soooo funny. but i like the passion that he promotes in that analytics matter, that analytics is important. we need more of this!
