CHARLES (1855-1931) and first published in 1917-tells the story of the fallen angels, who appeal to Enoch the Prophet, great-grandson of Noah, to speak with God on their behalf after He banishes them from heaven. Enoch travels to heaven, describing what he sees there in detail, and speaks with the angels and ponders their nature. The book, in its original Hebrew or Aramaic, is believed to have influenced the writers of the New Testament, and while not considered canonical scripture, its apocalyptic themes continue to be highly influential today in modern popular Christian End Times fantasy, such as the Left Behind series. This Book of Enoch needs to be in the hands of every serious Bible student as an indispensable aid in understanding the New Testament regarding the evolution of theology between 200 BC and 100 AD, and also the Old Testament concerning problem prophetical passages. The book was written by a number of Jewish writers around the second century BC, and was considered inspired Scripture in the century before Christ and up to the third century AD by such early Church Fathers, as Justin Martyr, Origen, Clement of Alexandria, and Tertullian. It was eventually removed from the canon of Scripture in the fourth century and was virtually lost to Western Christendom until the early 1800s AD, when Laurence published the first English translation based upon a single Ethiopic manuscript. There are several other popular versions in print today, but the only translation worthy of serious study is the R.H. Charles edition, published in the early 1900s after twenty years of extensive research. His translation is based upon 23 Ethiopic manuscripts and all available source fragments of the time. Compared to other translations, the Charles version is quite exhaustive in the number of pages (nearly twice as many as other editions). He, alone, offers an extensive, in-depth Introduction of over 100 pages, and a comprehensive analysis and criticism of the text, plus accurate verse numbering. This is definitely the version to purchase without question! Two other important ancient books readers might want to consider are The Book of Jasher Referred to in Joshua and II Samuel (1840 edition), and The Book of Jubilees translated from the Ethiopic by Schodde, offered by Artisan Publishers. A Review of This Edition - Not a Review of the Original Text

I am writing this review to assist the reader in selecting an EDITION of the Book of Enoch. This particular Edition is exceptionally scholarly - but not particularly readable for casual students or "simply curious" individuals. I am in complete agreement with previous reviewers that "The Book of Enoch ...(is) as an indispensable aid in understanding the New Testament regarding the evolution of theology between 200 BC and 100 AD..." Clearly, this collection of "Lost Books & Manuscripts" contains critical (and vastly under-considered) information relevant to Christianity, Judaism & Islam. However, the footnotes in this Edition vastly outweigh the text. Example: one page contained two lines of text and the entire remainder of the page was footnotes. (I am an attorney, and this volume made law school text books seem like Comic Books in comparison.) Although footnotes are undoubtedly essential to understanding the text, many of the footnotes in this edition contain lengthy paragraphs of the original Aramaic or Hebrew or Greek or Ethiopian texts - written in their original languages. So, even "skimming" the footnotes requires wading through several lines of very tiny text written in other languages. Additionally, the footnotes presuppose a familiarity with theological studies that most readers (including myself) do not have. In sum, "The Book of Enoch" is a MUST READ for anyone who wishes to fully understand the roots and contexts from which modern religion evolved. BUT, unless you are a serious Theological Scholar, I would suggest you find an edition that is perhaps annotated in a more "readable" and less "scholarly" fashion.

surprised by 3 things

I ordered this book, The Book of Enoch, on April 9, 2010. A nice surprise when the book arrived was the book's final page that says "Made in the USA, Lexington, KY, 10 April 2010". A freshly printed copy!

Surprise #2 was found on a beginning page..."Forgotten Books takes the uppermost care to preserve the wording and images from the original book. However, this book has been scanned and reformatted from the original, and as such we cannot guarantee that it is free from errors or contains the full content of the original." I wanted a "full content" and probably got it. It is a beautifully done book and I'm glad I blindly ordered this edition.

Surprise #3 was a note in the back of the book concerning many books free to read on their web site. On going to the site, it appears that you need a membership to read them but you don't. A very nice bonus! Lots of books there among my interests.

About the Author
Christopher Kenworthy worked as a writer, director, and producer for fourteen years. He directed a feature film that played to sold-out screenings in Australia and received strong reviews. He worked on music videos, visual effects tutorials and commercial projects, and is the author of the best-selling Master Shots Vol 1 and Master Shots Vol 2, along with two novels and many short stories. Born in England, he currently lives in Australia with two daughters.

Great concept

I haven't sat down and read this book straight through yet, but that isn't necessarily the intent either. This is a reference book and actually a quite ingenious tool. It's like training wheels for a new director or DP - when breaking down a script for a story board or shot list, you can simply skim through the book for the type of scene you are doing and find the various shot setups with full descriptions of how they are used and what they do to convey the different emotions you would be going for in the scene. There are pictures everywhere that clearly illustrate the setups, so it is easy to navigate the book and quickly understand the technique. The author recommends buying several copies for crew members and actually using it on set for reference to the look you are building. I don't know if that would work on a lot of sets, but indie projects and student films with inexperienced crews could greatly benefit from that kind of reference point. I'm definitely going to use it liberally in storyboarding an upcoming short film.

The bottom line is, I can't think of any reason not to have this book.

No need for a 500 page manual on setting up some clever shots. This smaller book does the job and does it well. It has an easy to understand walk through for each shot and diagrams and examples to go with them. I will grab Volume 2 as well I think!

Simple, detailed and easy to follow

I've been a professional photographer for many years and was interested in translating "still" shots into film/digital live motion. I understand the lighting fundamentals and scene set-ups as well as many DOF applications and post photo retouches. Although this book doesn't go into the technical lighting and DOP / shutter speed details of shooting film/digital, it makes up for that by demonstrating camera set-up and movement and how these kinds of shots set certain moods or lead ins for establishing scenes.

Considering this, I must say that those that have an understanding of lighting and focal length, shutter speed, etc.(fundamental photo and video theory), will benefit the most from this book. If you're a novice, I recommend carefully looking at the illustrative photos and thinking more about how the lighting and DOP, etc. contribute to "selling" the shot and also pick-up a book on lighting and scene set-up fundamentals.

In general, great book that dissects the many camera technique and movements used in MANY if not all movies that we take for granted. Also has great real world examples to convey that technique so you can view it for yourself if you're ambitious enough.

Cpt. Shore made some egregious errors on this tome.

The derating of trained Russian Sniper would have been a sure way to get ones head handed to him! The idea that the Russian wasn't well equipped
Is incorrect! The Germans started the war using captured Russian scoped rifles. And indeed delighted in learning to snipe with these rifles and captured Russian training films subtitled in German!

It was amazing that they did not have far more people killed ...

After reading this book I came away thinking that the British Army was run by a bunch of idiots. It was amazing that they did not have far more people killed than they did. Time after time Capt Shore writes about the stupid orders that were given by senior officers. Common sense was a uncommon trait in the officer corps. Capt. Shore led me to believe that the average soldier in his army was afraid of guns in general. This is what happens when the government does not trust it's people to own guns. Just let a world war start and see how unable the recruits are tasked to defend their country. Thank God and the second amendment for the American way of life ! I also noticed how Capt. Shore spent a lot of time ranting how a "target shooter " from Bisley does not make a good sniper. All I can say is thank God the Brits have Bisley and it's fantastic group of target shooters to draw from. Most average people don't know that the British have some of the worlds greatest target shooters ! Bisley is one of the Worlds greatest shooting ranges and breading grounds for the making of British snipers.

One of my favorites

Candidly I picked up this book after having read 3 other books on sniping during WWI and WW2. I half expected to be "worn out" on the subject. I was wrong. This book was thoroughly enjoyable and informative. If I could only read (or re-read) two books on sniping development during wartime, I would pick "A Rifleman Went to War" first, and this would be a very close second.

Be careful what catches your attention... You never know what happens next.

Brett’s relationship with Myserra has gone a little bit off the rails of late. Myserra is not spending as much time with Brett as she used to which Brett finds hard to take, at one point being rather short with Myserra and when she leaves him alone for some time, he finds that things just become worse. A mysterious bracelet catches his attention and Brett discovers that when a Succubus leaves something out in the open, it can change things in ways one would never expect.

Myserra and Ashley do not appear for very long in this work, as it is really focused on Brett alone. It is clear that Myserra has something in mind for Brett, the comment she makes at the beginning of the story makes that very clear, and the means to make that happen is both cute and wonderfully told. They do, of course, appear by the end of the story again, to make sure that Brett, or rather Brooke, gets everything out of her lesson, and the twist in the ending is a neat little one that I didn’t see coming earlier in the work.

Brett’s transformation into “Bimbo Brooke” is told in a way that makes it very subtle and by the time that Brett realizes that something is happening to him, it’s far too late to do anything about it. Not that he could at any rate as Myserra’s trap for her submissive works really quite well. The Brooke that has been seen before isn’t the Brooke that appears in this work. She’s very much a bimbo, but there is also something a bit different about her. She does try to fight her transformation, attempts to control herself as much as she can, but over time she falls further and further into Myserra’s trap. When it finally closes completely, Brooke is a cute little sex toy that has quite the experience with her Mistress and her new found friend in the story.
I liked the mental shifting of Brett to Brooke and then how Brooke turned the corner into being the best bimbo she could possibly be. The shifts in attitude and character build up slowly over time and to Brett and Brooke’s point of view, when they do shift, it’s fairly seamless and not noticed too much by him/herself.

There are two very hot scenes in the work, one that introduces a new character to the series which I thought was lovely, and the other when Myserra and Ashley return that takes Brooke into being completely bimbo in nature and finding out what that means in some very hot ways. Two really well told hot flashes, but the mind control and body transformations are really the core of the story and as such they make the work very strong as a whole.
The author knows his characters and how they act, what they do, and more importantly, how things come to the climax aren’t out of place. I would have liked to see a bit more of Bimbo Brett getting into some “situations”, more than she did. I think I would like to see her return again sometime, perhaps Brett will see this side of him/herself as being a treat in more ways than one.

Certainly Brett will have learned not to touch things that he doesn’t recognize. Succubi have all sorts of things to play with… or to play with others you know…

Four and a half out of five pitchforks.

Just a wonderfully fun work that just made me smile throughout. It was wonderful to see Brett, through Brooke, be something different than she usually is. It gives a different perspective on things, what could have been, what might have been, and what could, possibly, return again some time. A lovely light, joyful, and cute story that I really did enjoy…

Soviet and Russian anti aircraft vehicles

This book is on the middle to upper end of the Osprey scale. It has a lot of really excellent photos and other illustrations and gives a good history of the various systems developed by the Soviets. Guardia also does an very good job describing similar systems fielded by NATO as well as NATO aircraft countermeasures. There are a number of editing errors I found troubling, by way of example one of the Soviet guns was given an armor penetration of 110 cm which seems like it should be 110 mm. Osprey's editorial staff should have caught that and I think they let down the reader, and the author by not tightening up and catching such errors before the book goes to print. Otherwise this is an excellent work and well worth getting. I recommend this for anyone with an interest in Soviet AFV or in air defense systems in general.

Interesting fare

Self-propelled anti-aircraft weapons have been around for quite some time and certainly they’ll often have a presence. Those of the Soviet Union are no different. This book takes the tale from the beginning with the ZSU-37 introduced in 1945 (but which didn’t see combat apparently) through to the 9K22 Tunguska – with a good amount of time spent on the well known SZU 23-4.

This – the 222nd instalment of the New Vanguard series by Osprey - conforms to the premise of the series in that it is very concise, has lots of photographs of the vehicles from different angles and has colour illustrations. This latter is of course a boon for modellers and the splashes of colour really do liven up the books. There is a short bibliography and unlike many bibliographies in the Osprey series that deal with Soviet armour this one is made up of books written in English.

In some instalments of this series there is so much information to pack in that there is no time to discuss the vehicles operational use. Luckily in this one there is room for some of that and it was interesting to read how some of these weapons went in a live scenario.

All up a good instalment of this series and on an interesting subject to boot. Recommended.

Self-propelled anti-aircraft guns of the Soviet Union is another great book by the osprey series, book provides great detail and lots of drawing and pictures. The most interesting for me was reading about the latest ant-aircraft system the SA-22 weapon system that is now in service and the mods being done on this system. The other older systems are also covered but the most recent data on the current new systems was well worth the purchase. Easy read and enjoyable

This detailed study examines sartorial style in India from the late nineteenth century to the present, showing how trends in clothing are related to caste, level of education, urbanization, and a larger cultural debate about the nature of Indian identity.

Clothes have been used to assert power, challenge authority, and instigate social change throughout Indian society. During the struggle for independence, members of the Indian elite incorporated elements of Western style into their clothes, while Gandhi's adoption of the loincloth symbolized the rejection of European power and the contrast between Indian poverty and British wealth. Similar tensions are played out today, with urban Indians adopting "ethnic" dress as villagers seek modern fashions.

Illustrated with photographs, satirical drawings, and magazine advertisements, this book shows how individuals and groups play with history and culture as they decide what to wear.

Well worth the read

I think the author has a distinct bias in her writing but that said, she has portrayed a fascinating study of Indian dress and it has been a very easy read. When I chose the book, I thought the subject would interest me but that the writing would be dry. Far from it, the author has really engaged me from the start and kept a good flow throughout. I am very happy I chose to buy and read this book.

subject a trifle misleading

This book is a bit tough to slug through. Nonetheless, it is a worthwhile read for historical purposes. The title was somewhat misleading. However, the seller did a great job, the book was packaged nicely and came on time, so no problems with them.
