Now Is the Time to Open Your Heart: A Novel, by Alice Walker

The Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Color Purple, Possessing the Secret of Joy, and The Temple of My Familiar now gives us a beautiful new novel that is at once a deeply moving personal story and a powerful spiritual journey.

In Now Is the Time to Open Your Heart, Alice Walker has created a work that ranks among her ?nest achievements: the story of a woman’s spiritual adventure that becomes a passage through time, a quest for self, and a collision with love.

Kate has always been a wanderer. A well-published author, married many times, she has lived a life rich with explorations of the natural world and the human soul. Now, at fifty-seven, she leaves her lover, Yolo, to embark on a new excursion, one that begins on the Colorado River, proceeds through the past, and flows, inexorably, into the future. As Yolo begins his own parallel voyage, Kate encounters celibates and lovers, shamans and snakes, memories of family disaster and marital discord, and emerges at a place where nothing remains but love.

Told with the accessible style and deep feeling that are its author’s hallmarks, Now Is the Time to Open Your Heart is Alice Walker’s most surprising achievement.

From Publishers Weekly
Kate Talkingtree, the 57-year-old writer protagonist of Walker's latest concoction, is a lifelong seeker after enlightenment in the carnal, political and religious realms. After dreaming of a dry river, she decides to take this as a spiritual clue and makes two river-centric spiritual quests. In one, she embarks on an all-female white-water rafting trip down the Colorado River, coming home to her boyfriend, Yolo, a painter, with potentially startling news. She has decided that it is time to give up her sexual life and "enter another: the life of the virgin." Yolo, a feminist-friendly guy, takes this as well as he can. Soon Kate is off on another quest, this time in the Amazon rain forest, where she hopes to heal herself through trances induced by yag‚ administered by an Amazonian shaman, Armando Juarez. Yag‚, a hallucinogenic beverage, is also known as Grandmother to the native peoples. Indeed, it turns out that Kate's Grandmother archetype-representing the Earth, the ancestors and those violated by patriarchy and racism-has been calling out to her. Meanwhile, Yolo, on vacation in Hawaii, encounters a transsexual Polynesian shaman, or Mahu, who charges him with the mission of giving up addictive substances. A subplot involving corporations conspiring to patent yag‚ creates an unintended irony: isn't the mindset that exploits native wisdom for Western corporate greed similar to the mindset that exploits native rituals for the sake of Western spiritual "healing"? Luckily, followers of the goddess, and presumably Walker's readers, are not very keen on irony. Those who retain some affection for that hopelessly outdated and patriarchal trope are advised to bypass this inflated paean to the self.

From Booklist
Kate, a successful author fearful of aging and uncertain about continuing her relationship with Yolo, an artist, sets off on a journey of spiritual discovery. She has been profoundly unhappy for some time, dreaming of rivers, until she takes off for rivers--the Colorado and the Amazon. Among strangers, Kate is able to distance herself from her life and her relationship. Yolo, on his own separate journey, meets a former lover, a Hawaiian woman now overweight and weighed down with the recent loss of her son to a drug overdose and a sense that she--like her son--has lost her way. Kate finds growing intimacy among a group of disparate souls who unburden themselves of their pasts under the influence of yage, a South American medicinal herb. Kate finds that the herb allows her to reveal her innermost secrets and puts her in touch with the elders. Despite their frictions, Kate and Yolo have similar reawakenings about the land as mother, overcoming personal and ethnic oppression, and dismantling barriers between the sexes, the races, and young and old. Walker's dreamlike novel incorporates the political and spiritual consciousness and emotional style for which she is known and appreciated. Vanessa Bush

Now is the time to pick up this book!
By John K
Alice Walker has done it again. She has created a deeply rich world full of amazing characters that you hate to leave when the book is finished. Unlike most of her other works, this book has an extremely modern feel to it. It takes place in the present, and although it happens mostly in the jungles, it still feels like home.
Kate, the main character inspired by Walker's grandmother, channels a lot of Walkers feelings about the world today, and growing older. In the past, I've always felt the ancestors in Walker's work, but never much of herself. This book combines the two elements beautifully.
Do yourself a favor and big pick up this remarkable book, by one of the greatest voices of our time.

Humanity pondered
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
When Alice Walker, the earthy literary wordsmith, releases a new book, I feel

an unmistakable pull that compels me to not only buy the book but to read it.

So, when NOW IS THE TIME TO OPEN YOUR HEART was released

I did as the unforeseen forces commanded, I bought and read the book

and I haven't regretted one solitary reflective moment since I did.

In NOW IS THE TIME TO OPEN YOUR HEART, we meet Kate, a successful author who

is pondering her life. She seems to have reached a crossroads of sorts where

she is trying to unearth the meaning of her existence. This search leads her

on a number of soul-searching journeys that ultimately leads Kate to a truer

understanding of herself and others around her.

In true Walker style, this novel is filled with wonderful symbolism and

experiences which draw the reader in and makes him/her a part of the main

character's quest. Walker's characters deal with a myriad of issues including

aging, sexuality, religion, abuse, and defining oneself. I found myself

disappointed when I read the final words. I wanted the journey to continue

and somehow, after reading NOW IS THE TIME TO OPEN YOUR HEART, I think Walker

wants it to as well.

top three??
By Dr. Skye Hughes
Despite enjoying previous works by this author, I actually stayed awake last night contemplating whether this novel was in my top three worst novels of all time. Why? It is meandering, cliched, downright offensive in terms of stereotypes and the main characters Kate and Yolo generally bear no resemblance to real people. To compound the problem, the other characters who play supporting roles are hollow shells used merely to make didactic points about oppression and abuse. Being black is depicted in terms of such simplistic stereotypes as "being more tolerant than anyone else", being native American is "being in touch with the land" and being white has nothing positive to say for it at all.

For example, the author seems unaware that if Kate actually lived in Africa as I do, her sexuality would be enough to get her thrown into jail by virtually every African government of the day and would result in her being an outcast by local communities. That's the level of tolerance here in the Motherland.

My point ultimately is that this novel is ahistorical, ill-informed and in terms of simple entertainment value - particularly tedious if you have any interest in wit, irony, insightfulness or relevance. Don't waste your money.

The Jews of Egypt, 1920-1970: In the Midst of Zionism, Anti-Semitism, and the Middle East Conflict, by Michael M. Laskier

The 50 years that this study spans were central in the shaping of the Middle East as it is known today: during this period, the Jews of Egypt were exposed to diverse challenges stemming from European style anti-Semitism in the 1930s, the perils of World War II, Zionism as it was promoted locally and by emissaries from the Yishuv, (the Jewish Community of Palestine) and activities after 1948 related to emigration to the newly created Jewish state. What were the domestic policies of the pre-Nasser regime regarding the Jews? What policies were implemented under Nasser? What role did Egyptian Jewish community leaders play at times of crisis? To what extent did Zionism attract adherents to its ranks? What role legal - semi-legal, and illegal - did the Yishuv and post 1948 Israel play in influencing Jewish attitudes in Egypt, in prodding them to emigrate? This book provides in exhaustive detail the political and social events during this crucial period in the history of the Middle East and the history of a people.

A good book, but could be more complete
By A Customer
This is one of the few books, if not the only one, on Egyptian Jews that mention the detention camps of Abu Zaabal and Tura.
I knew a person who was one of about 400 to 500 Jews interned in Egypt during the Six Day War for up to 3 years. He stayed 3 years and 15 days between 1967 and 1970. He was tortured: ordered to walk on broken glass, beaten on the head repeatedly. Some of the younger inmates were raped.
The book has a lot of details about property sequestration, and the dispossession of Egyptian Jewry. The author seems to be detail oriented. However he did not detail our suffering and torture in Abu Zaabal and Tura.
The author is a little bit dry, but that preference is a drawback, since as a result, he may have avoided talking about torture. I encourage him to go with a second edition, but before he does that, he should talk to the Abu Zaabal and Tura internees.

Essential piece of history
By Jessica Weissman
If you're interested at all in the Second Exodus from Egypt, this is an essential book. Laskier reviews the early 20th century history of the Jewish community in Egypt, and then runs down, year by year, how nearly all Jews left Egypt. He differentiates the conditions of each year in the critical period from the end of WWII until the late 60s, and reviews the different exit routes and destinations and sources of help for different streams of the Second Exodus.

This isn't a set of anecdotes - it is real and solid history. The bibliography checks out, and the notes are useful in themselves.

Review

"Edward Qian has been a significant researcher and practitioner in the area of risk parity, with his efforts extending further back than before he coined the term ‘risk parity.’ Risk Parity Fundamentals should be on the bookshelf of anyone considering or investing in multi-asset, risk-managed strategies like risk parity, both as a cover-to-cover read and as a quick reference manual."
―Michael Campbell, MBA, CAIA, Deputy Chief Investment Officer, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), Toronto, Canada

"Edward Qian’s book is a must-read for both risk parity investors and practitioners. For investors, it is the ‘buyer’s guide’ of a financial product category with lots of buzz, but not many structures. For practitioners, it is a DIY book written by a leading practitioner and theorist. Skillfully illustrating complex mathematical concepts through easy-to-understand analogies, Dr. Qian makes his investment insights available to both quantitative and non-quantitative oriented audiences. Dr. Qian carefully examines many important debates regarding risk parity investing and offers his insightful analyses. We can all learn something new from Dr. Qian’s writing."
―Ronald Hua, Managing Director, Goldman Sachs Asset Managements

"Dr. Edward Qian, the inventor of the term ‘risk parity,’ started to manage risk parity portfolios in 2006―long before the strategy gained popularity in recent years. This book was based on a collection of essays for investors that Dr. Qian wrote over the years. With additional effort, Dr. Qian turned it into a comprehensive framework on multi-asset investment, a ready-to-use textbook for serious investors. As an investor and then a portfolio manager of risk rarity strategy, I find Dr. Qian’s book serves as a great reference. It’s a must-have for people who are interested in asset allocation and multi-asset investing, with rigorous theory as well as real money management considerations."
―Dr. Hua Fan, Senior Managing Director, Head of Fixed Income and Absolute Return Investment Department, China Investment Corp

Not a "pure" risk parity book but definitely worth a read
By Fred Zhikang Yu
Initially I feel puzzled to see a book on risk parity; I didn't know that there is much about risk parity to fill in a whole book.

After finishing the first two chapters, I decide I should finish this book. Its perspective on risk parity is not all the same as others. Some discussions on topics such as high yield bonds, forward rate, stop loss and so on are very interesting. Not that I don't know these but it is interesting to see the author connect them to risk parity.

Only one thing I don't enjoy about this book: the connection of certain topics with risk parity is a bit weak so sometimes I would get lost on where I am in terms of risk parity.

A good guide, not perfect, but worth having!
By Laura Haggarty
I got my kids two strategy guides when Pokemon Gold & Silver came out, this one and the "official" Nintendo one. Of the two, this one has gotten MUCH more use. My daughters have marked lots of areas with PostIt flags, the pages are dog-eared, the back is getting ripped, you know they use it!
I realize the previous reviewers noted some minor problems with this guide, but all in all they're just that, minor. No, this guide does not have a built-in Pokedex, they published it before they had the info put together for the Pokedex, and I'm fine with that (see my review of the new Pokedex here on Amazon, it's well worth having too!). And yes, there are some typos, but that's not a big deal.
There is a lot to love about this guide. It has comparison charts for the various types of Pokemon, so you know which type to use when battling. There are pages and pages on everything from TMs to HMs, Berries to Apricorns, the various Pokeball types to the new Mystery Gift items. There's an in-depth section on breeding Pokemon, as well as the newest ways to evolve them (stones versus the happiness factor). There's a great quick and dirty path through the game, which you can check to make sure you didn't miss anything. And best of all, there's a special "sealed" section in the back with spoiler info which you can open or not, depending on whether you're an adult (yes, I know you grownups out there play this game!) or a 6 year-old who needs help through the Tin Tower.
All in all this guide is well worth the money, and if you've got more than one kid playing these games, I'd advise you to get two, to spare yourselves the fighting over it. Don't hesitate, buy it!

Not a bad guide but - no Pokedex?
By Simon Gifford
I have mixed feelings about this Strategy Guide, which I bought as a companion book to Pokemon Gold on the Game Boy. Generally, I think it`s well written and easy to understand, with superb maps which clearly tell you where items are and how to get around in the different cities (which I found really useful, as I`m not very good at navigation in RPGs). It also tells you about the different Gym Leaders and the Elite Four, and what the best Pokemon to use against them are. There is a section on how to breed Pokemon too, plus charts telling you what Pokemon are found in certain areas during the morning, daytime and nighttime and the stages of evolution for a few new Pokemon.
Unfortunately, this book doesn`t really go into detail about where different Pokemon can be found and how to complete your Pokedex. It seems this book was intended just as a walkthrough to help you complete the game quickly, which kind of spoils your fun. If you want help with filling up your Pokedex properly, you have to buy another Prima book, which is advertised in the back.
Overall I`d recommend this book if you`re a novice at the Pokemon games, because the maps and walkthroughs are very good. But sadly, the lack of a proper Pokedex stops the book from being excellent.

some faults but still a good guide
By snowy
Have being considering for quite some time whether to buy the Brady Games strategy guide instead, due to the attractive shiny Gold/Silver cover ... heard it may be a collector item too.
However, finally decided to pick the Prima one. Reason? ... it is more informative and easy-to-understand after flipping through both the guides.
No doubt, unlike the previous Red/Blue/Yellow guides, Prima fails to consolidate the Pokedex at the back of the book to give a clear-cut listing this time round. Neither does it have a checklist for one to keep track of the Pokemons captured. The Pokedex is actually found throughout the book, making it difficult to refer as and when requires! This feature is similar for the Brady Games one too.
Personally, I like the tables found inside this book. They make it easier to understand certain concepts, eg. there are tables showing the evolution examples (Eevee + Fire Stone = Flareon), breeding examples (Male Pikachu + Female Pikachu = Pichu), and so on.
Moreover, when discussing about an area (eg. Route 30), there is always a table showing the wild pokemons that would appear there at different time of a day (Morning, Day, Nite). This feature does not seem to be found in the Brady Games guide when I glanced through.
Like always, there is a 2-pages rough outlines of what one needs to accomplish at different places and an overview map, serving as quick start tools.
So far the book has being helpful in leading me through the journey, and I am on my way to complete the game.

Coming To Our Senses, by Morris Berman

An ambitious and provocative analysis of the relationship between culture, mind, and body in the history of Western society, Morris Berman’s influential classic Coming to our Senses has been engrossing audiences with its carefully-researched and thoughtful exploration of somatic experience for decades. Finally back in print for a new generation of readers, Berman’s treatise on the West’s historic denial of physicality is relevant as ever in a society increasingly plagued by addiction, depression, and distraction. Berman deftly weaves threads of history, philosophy, and psychoanalysis into an elegant and accessible argument about the ways our physical experience of the world relates to the culture in which we exist.

To make his case, Berman draws on studies of infant behavior with mirrors; analyzes symbolic expressions of human-animal relationships ranging from cave-wall etchings to Disney cartoons; investigates esoteric breathing techniques and occult rituals; and examines the nature of creativity. Berman also illuminates Christianity’s origins in early Jewish meditation techniques, explains how the notion of romantic love evolved out of medieval Christian heresy, how modern science grew out of Renaissance mysticism, and how Nazism was the most recent episode in a recurring cycle of orthodoxy and heresy. A demanding and radical work of history, social criticism, and philosophy, Coming to our Senses is a beautifully-written and vastly important book.

almost, but not quite
By Louis Berger
It is interesting that what all the Amazon reviews to date have ignored or missed is Berman's deep foundation in a psychoanalytically informed understanding of ontogenesis (especially the very earliest developmental era). Berman, though no psychoanalyst, does know a good deal of the literature (Winnicott, Balint, Kohut, Klein, Barrett) but not quite enough about the clinical aspects of the discipline itself. (For example, he seems unaware of Paul Gray's work, an approach I see as a crucial addendum to the psychodynamic literature that Berman does know about.) He has much to say, and reading him carefully, slowly (a la Nietzsche's "slow reader"), thoughtfully, and via a series of circling converging passes through the work will repay the effort. I've scanned his "Wandering God," intend to study it, and it seems a more mature summing up of his position.

Incidentally, in this book I recommend especially chapter 1, a thorough introduction to ontogenesis, and chapter 10, a highly interesting and comprehensive analysis of two classes of creativity.

Although he has much to say (about Western insanity--for example, about the "psychotherapeutic use" of pets [p. 90]--a minor but telling example!), I think he's off the mark and misleads his readers by predicating his analyses on the mind-head vs body-experience polarity. I don't think the very important split to which he refers is well characterized in that way. (It so happens this split is a topic that interests me greatly---my new book [The unboundaried self] which should be out in 2-3 months focuses on this issue in a somewhat different way.)

Nevertheless, I think his work is just about the best in the vast subject area he has selected; there is approximately a decade between each of the three trilogy books, and his maturational path and progress are evident. All three works merit reading, as I have indicated, as does his "The twilight of American culture" which seems very much on the mark. He writes from a cultural historian's perspective about much of what I've written about from my renegate psychoanalyst's orientation.

The body cannot be divorced from mind
By A Customer
Morris Berman makes accessible the fusion of phenomenology, existentialism, and somatology which has been developing over the 20th Century. My own guides to this synthesis, which refuses to let the dual embodied first/third-person viewpoint remain outside intellectual consideration, are Paul Shepard (whose books have been reissued), Berman (whose earlier titles have been reissued), and Thomas Hanna. Berman's trilogy (The Reenchantment of the World, Coming to Our Senses, and Wandering God) may be the most explicit statement of his own formulation of the fusion, but his other cultural critiques such as Twilight of American Culture, written from the same dual first/third-person perspective, also provide insights into his formulation. If you find Coming to Our Senses skull-shattering, don't give up -- extend your reach to his other books. And perhaps read a smaller bit of Berman at a time. Slowly, in small bites. Like the biscuit labeled "eat me" in Alice -- it will take you wonderful places.

Morris Berman's most impressive book, I think.

How the Cathars and the Nazis have to do with love and pets. Why the Catholic Church may have invented the modern totalitarian state with the institution of the Inquisition. Why it matters to you to have some mental hygiene for mental health and private ownership of your own mind. How massive bait and switch events rob people of the time of their lives.

Practical Wisdom, by Barry Schwartz, Kenneth Sharpe

A reasoned yet urgent call to embrace and protect the essential, practical human quality that has been drummed out of our lives: wisdom.

It's in our nature to want to succeed. It's also human nature to want to do right. But we've lost how to balance the two. How do we get it back?

Practical Wisdom can help. "Practical wisdom" is the essential human quality that combines the fruits of our individual experiences with our empathy and intellect-an aim that Aristotle identified millennia ago. It's learning "the right way to do the right thing in a particular circumstance, with a particular person, at a particular time." But we have forgotten how to do this. In Practical Wisdom, Barry Schwartz and Kenneth Sharpe illuminate how to get back in touch with our wisdom: how to identify it, cultivate it, and enact it, and how to make ourselves healthier, wealthier, and wiser.

From Booklist
In this thoughtful consideration of an Aristotelian ideal, Schwartz and Sharpe delve deeply into what it means to practice wisdom. What makes this an engrossing (and socially significant) read is not the nod to the ancient Greeks but, rather, the numerous examples of people in all facets of American life who seek wisdom in their professional and personal choices. The authors consider how mandatory sentencing has removed the element of judgment from a judge’s position, citing a heartbreaking example. As they further make the case for empathy and patience, they delve into health care, education, and the groundbreaking work being conducted in the extraordinarily successful Veterans Court in Buffalo. Repeatedly, by example, they stress the necessity of a human approach, without politics, to the issues of how we live and interact with each other. And through all of this, Schwartz and Sharpe demonstrate how relevant Aristotle is today. As surprising as it is convincing, this thoughtful work will long stay with readers, as will the many people who are profiled on its pages. --Colleen Mondor

A Masterpiece That Breaks New Ground
By Theodore M. Horesh
Practical Wisdom accomplishes something very subtle that many of the reviewers on here seem to have missed. It presents a moral lens through which we might view American institutional breakdown. And because it is a lens we don't usually look through, it is paradigm shifting. What the mediocre reviews suggest is that the institutional breakdown has been covered by others and that the authors can't hang with academic moral philosophers. But these reviewers have clearly missed the point.

At the heart of the book is an application of Aristotelian ethics to an analysis of what has gone wrong with a set of core professions - law, medicine, teaching, and banking. Aristotle argued that ethics is not something we learn in a book somewhere and then go out and apply. Rather ethics is an everyday practice of learning to do the right thing, in the right way, at the right time, and in the right amounts. It involves balancing and optimizing multiple different and often conflicting goals. When our friend asks if we like her new hair cut, we want to be empathic and honest, we want her to look good and feel appreciated. And it takes practical wisdom to know the right thing to say, in the right way, at the right time. And it is like this with everything we do in life. The presentation of this material thus far is solid and lucid, though far from groundbreaking.

The problem is that we have neglected practical wisdom and instead focused on rules and incentives. Something has gone dreadfully wrong in our ability to read situations and to know how to act. It is as if we no longer trust ourselves and one another and can think of no better way of moderating our behavior than to regulate it with policies. This is a groundbreaking application of Aristotelian ethics to institutional breakdown. The problem, they are saying, is not too much government or a lack of the right programs but the way we behave. But what they have to say about our behavior is completely different from anything you will find in most personal development and spiritual books. Yet, it is easy to imagine at this stage that we are dealing with yet another libertarian railing against rules. But while the authors do not take positions on the political spectrum, this is far from another libertarian rant about regulations.

What is unique here is the answer they provide to institutional collapse: we need to provide the space for people to more fully engage their work, and the people working need to engage it in the right way. They need to recognize the ethos of their profession, the purpose, or perhaps we could say the mission. They need to recognize the various values and goals they seek to accomplish. And they need to develop the capacity to see which values and goals are appropriate for the circumstances. This can be accomplished through experience. It cannot be learned in a book and it cannot be fostered through incentives, though some policies will do a better job of creating space for this wisdom to be practiced and for it to arise. Rather, through experience we learn to recognize patterns, and in seeing a pattern that we recognize, given sufficient conscious experience, we will know what to do. For life is vastly more complex than textbook moral dilemmas.

The book highlights the hollowness of a variety of institutions, covering all of the major professions. And while I have seen analyses of each of them, few authors have taken on all of them at once. So this is more comprehensive than yet another analysis of the health care system or the finance industry. And because it is a comprehensive institutional critique, it could also be said to be a cultural critique. And while many authors, stretching deep into American history, have explored American shallowness and glibness, a lack of the capacity to see nuances and to do what is most fitting, I am aware of no one who has matched such a critique with an ethical answer. If these are the problems of the American character and American institutions, then there is an ethical practice that can transform our institutions, transform our culture, and transform ourselves. That practice is practical wisdom. This goes straight to the heart of what has long been ailing America and provides an answer that is difficult to reject. If many of the reviewers seem to have missed the point, this may because they themselves lack an eye for what is fitting. It is a subtle answer, and while the examples are abundant, it would be easy for the reader to collapse their answer into just a critique of institutional breakdown or a simple self help book. It is neither and so much more.

Now those who have read the book may notice that I added a little. The authors do not mention a deep critique of the America character, and perhaps if they did, the controversy would have sold more books. Nor do they discuss much about more recent developments that have driven our turn toward rules and regulations. Answers might range from information overload to increasing levels of diversity to increases in human freedom to the breakdown in social norms. There are answers for all of these challenges, but as far as I am aware, no one has provided practical wisdom as the answer. In a personal interview with Barry Schwartz, he appeared to concur with my suggestion that these were some of the causes behind the shift. And perhaps the book would have grabbed more of us by the shirt collar if the authors had mentioned these things. American society at the dawn of the twenty-first century is radically complex, and we are still struggling with how to manage that complexity.

My criticism of the book is unusual in that I don't think the authors went far enough in applying their own framework. In other words, I think they are able to answer more problems than they seem to recognize. Take cultural diversity. One school of thought says we need to be more sensitive to difference. Another school of thought says we need to integrate cultural difference into a wider set of shared norms. But while Practical Wisdom does not touch on the issue, it provides an answer. What we need to do with difference is engage it, and through continually engaging our human differences, we will begin to see what sort of engagement is the right kind at the right time. Through engaging differences in this way, we might develop new norms of human interaction. This is how we make a Boston or New York or San Francisco work. Or take environmental ethics. The last few decades have seen a massive increase in the number of beings and things we need to take into ethical consideration: how we travel, where we drive, what we eat. To those of us who take animal suffering or greenhouse gas emissions seriously, the burden of ethical commitments can become unbearable. Most just try to throw off the burden by making glib remarks about vegetarians or treating climate change as a hoax. But Practical Wisdom provides a framework through which we might optimize the application of this mountain of commitments. Vegetarians could do far more good if they learned the right way to engage their concern for animals, in the right amounts, at the right, all the while paying attention to the right times for personal and the right times for political change.

The book also pulls the rug out from libertarian conservatism. For they may be reacting to the exact same things that the authors identify as being problematic, but their answer lacks compassion, is divisive, and may not actually accomplish what they want. The authors could have been more explicit here and used that challenge to draw attention to their very important arguments. But the book also opens the gates to a third way in American politics. Call it the civil sphere. Perhaps we as a society could learn to identify institutional problems that are not conducive to policy solutions, either of the minimalist or maximalist kind. Perhaps we could identify areas where there is a need for more space free from regulations. Imagine uniting the teachers unions with contractors, entrepreneurs with liberal legal rights groups, doctors with creative rebels. The agenda would be neither left, nor right, nor center, but entirely new. Any politician who adopted these arguments would find a ready constituency of disengaged swing voters.

There is another way the work could be taken further. In the tradition of Aristotle, the authors suggest that practical wisdom cannot be studied but must be learned through experience. But one can imagine creating exercises that speed up the learning process immensely by helping us to identify what it is like to experience practical wisdom within the context of one's profession. Here is what I have in mind. Spend some time identifying and writing up the mission of your work. Then list the goals, values, principles, and objectives you seek to accomplish. Now imagine a challenging scenario of the sort you often confront on the job. Notice how it feels in your body. Now try to imagine what it would feel like if you could accomplish several of your objectives at once. Notice how this feels. Now imagine other similar scenarios, noticing how it feels to get the response right. Do this repeatedly and regularly until it is second sense. Having done such an exercise, a person could much more quickly learn practical wisdom.

If the authors failed to include such exercises, perhaps it is because of the groundbreaking nature of the work. This book simply opens a gateway into a whole new way of looking at being in the world and there isn't the space to go into all of the applications. The point of these criticisms is not to say that the book was lacking, but rather that it was so ripe as to require a follow up. Read it and read it well. Perhaps if you read it with practical wisdom, you too will see it to be a masterpiece.

Organizational wisdom
By Leon Lerborg
It's an easy book, with some basic, usable ideas about wisdom - which isn't discussed or defined though! It contains many cases, elaboratedly described, but still somewhat artificially. From the point of view of management its naive since it only discuss and criticise rules and incentives as the two culprits of management; og the cases are often somehow extreme, which leaves you a bit barehanded when it comes to more complex cases.

It's easy read - and still worth the time spend.

Expect to be surprised!
By Tom W.
I seldom read love stories, however, I was referred to this book by a friend and really enjoyed the suspense involved with the time pressured process that was involved with selecting a wife in India to bring back to America in the 1960's. The pressures on all involved, and the how the decision's were made by both parties to the eventual marriage, were all new insights for me into India culture and customs. The book gains momentum as you read through the chapters and toward the end you can't put it down as emotions go sky high and you just need to know how it will end. I am confident you will enjoy this book's growing suspense and picturesque details.

Interesting and informative. Highly recommended.
By Dean McNeal
I enjoyed this book very much. It was especially interesting to me because I know people whose families originated in India and I learned so much about their culture and customs. The foods mentioned in the story were especially interesting to me and since then I have had the opportunity to sample some of these and have found that I like Indian food more than I thought I might. The author did a good job of including foods, style of clothing, etc. yet keep you very interested in the outcome at the end of the book. I think you would find that it is a book you would really enjoy!
