It's the Missing Link!

Concise, organized, and empowering--Creating Character Arcs gives you the tools you need to not only create compelling characters, but to create compelling character-driven plots. I starting calling this book "The Missing Link" about the time I reached the half-way mark. It's that "ah-hah" book that ties together all the pieces of writing advice I've received over the years and offers guiding principles for getting a book written.

The questions at the end of the chapters are invaluable. A book that I started writing years ago, but set aside because I didn't have the skills to finish it is NOW finally taking shape with the help of this guide. Reading the chapters and then working through the questions has produced an outline that is keeping me on track as I write each scene. Experiencing my main character's character arc step by step is an amazing experience and this book is responsible for it. Like I said, it's "The Missing Link." All writers should have this book in their library to pull out each time they begins a new story. And if you use this book in conjunction with Wieland's other craft books, wower, you have a complete writing program that gets you from beginner to writer in no time.

A wonderful addition to my collection

I have several books on character development, outlining and other aspects of writing in my writer's library. However, none of the references I have cover the material in this book. This book forges a link between character and plot development that I think many aspiring writers miss. This book is not character arcs in the abstract. This book ties character development aspects to particular points in the plot arc. For me this is a critical piece because it gives practical advice as to where and when certain things in the character arc should occur. Most of the book is spent on the positive character arc, but sufficient treatment is also give to a flat character arc and negative character arc. Numerous examples are given from familiar books and movies to show the various points of character development. So not only are the tips and advice practical, they come with practical examples so you can see exactly how different stories treat them. The book is worth the price of admission and I highly recommend it.

We’ve heard of plot and conflict and tension and setting, but as we all recall, a critical aspect of a story is a character struggling with their flaw. Readers cheer on characters striving for their plot goal – the Thing They Want – knowing full well success is really found in the Thing They Need. This creates the Character’s Arc.

What is a character’s arc? How is it developed? Where does it fit along the plot line?

K.M. Weiland’s Creating Character Arcs answers these questions. Building on expertise from previous authors and her acute knowledge of story structure, she lays out a step by step approach to develop the protagonist’s journey away from the Lie chaining him to their flaw to the bolt cutting Truth that sets them free.

She identifies three types of character arcs: positive, flat, and negative. In each section, she discusses the arc development, where it should be found in the plot, and provides numerous examples from well-known works. More importantly, these same works appear throughout the detailed discussions so the reader sees the arc in progress. Beneficial to be sure, but Weiland puts concepts into practice with her accompanying questions. The author now has tools that can define or refine their character’s internal change. The results are toned muscles that a regular character biography fails to deliver.

Whether you’re a plotter or a panster, this book is a must for your library. It is one that should be read, re-read, and re-read again. It doesn’t belong on the shelf, but at arm’s reach as you write and revise.

This is the most useful book about writing that I have ever bought.

Don't be fooled by the whimsical cover; much like attempting to describe with gorgeous precision the inner workings of a fantastic setting for a novel, what is going on on the inside is much deeper and more complex than you might think.

I've read a lot of books on writing at this point in my life, but most of them haven't addressed the questions that linger with me while I'm sitting down to write. So many choices that a writer can make seem to 'depend' on one thing or another that it's difficult to set out examples with hard and fast rules (or, if it isn't, a thousand other books already exist which contain those few inviolate rules, and therefore those aren't the questions that stick with me). It's a difficult beast to wrangle, especially in useful specifics. On top of that, I think that many of the processes involved in describing those choices or the results of those choices from a reader's perspective are abstract, more a question of what is sensed than something easily articulated.

Wonderbook comes the closest of any instructive book I own to digging down into the nitty-gritty of those many abstract questions. It exhaustively discusses the particulars of a written work's moving parts, and does this from many different angles whenever possible. If a novel is a deck of cards, Wonderbook seems to spread the deck all around the floor into the thinnest layer, so that you can see everything clearly, shuffling things around to have a look at the particulars in as much detail as you'd like.

For me, the 'wonder' is that doing this so acutely and with such precision did not make the book any less a joy to read. It is stunningly gorgeous to look at, but the art is not superfluous to the learning. It's often very funny. Jeff VanderMeer is a master at espressing clearly the nebulous feelings and impulses that come along with both reading and writing stories, and thoroughly examining their place and scope, and relation to everything else.

tl;dr: Wonderbook is a comprehensive, intuitive look at the craft of writing. It's gorgeous to look at. (I don't actually watch Dr. Who (please don't kill me), but that catchphrase about the Tardis does come to mind. "It's bigger on the inside." So I think it goes with Wonderbook.)

How about six stars?

I bought this book at the recommendation of an English professor at a local community college, who I happened to bump into at Barnes & Noble. Yes, I paid list price for this book, and it's paying off more than I ever expected. I'm not sure what is more valuable, the ideas that Jeff shares himself, or the other authors he brings in to offer thoughts on a specific aspect of writing. It doesn't matter at this point; I'm getting more ideas about my own book and I haven't even finished chapter 2.

if the number of PostIt notes one writes as the result of inspiration from a book is a valuable to metric to anyone, I think this book has more PostIt's per page than anything I've ever read. I stopped putting them in the book because it was a distraction of its own.

If there is any complaint I would lodge, it is that the glossy pages reflect a lot of light if one is sitting at a desk to read the book. Maybe I need a different desk lamp, so the problem isn't the book. But I'm spending several hours a day, moving at a glacial pace because I get so many ideas. If you think you are an idea person, and you want to write fiction, then get this book to help you organize your ideas. If you don't think you are an idea person, get this book and see if it doesn't help you unlock the part of you that your peers made you hide under a mattress when you were young.

I purchased this book after reading an interview with Vandermeer on one of my favorite blogs (Terribleminds). I am totally blown away by this book. It is a visually stunning collection of some of the most imaginative art I've ever seen but to have that in a book about writing....it's nirvana! Many of the ideas are presented through visual art rather than all words which is a total stimulating match made in Muse-heaven. You owe it to yourself to have this in your library.

Everytime I open it, I find something I didn't see the first time. You willnot regret taking a chance on this.

Best Exercise Book for Players Rated 2000+

I got this book about 6 months ago. I bought it for two reasons. First, it's a Russian Chess School exercise book, which is usually a gurantee for its content quality. Second, although I had noticed this exercise book is written for player rated above 2000+, I still decided to buy it because I believed the gap between Class A and Expert is not that huge, and if it works best for players ELO 2000+, it should also help an ambitious Class A player.

Soon after I began to work on this book, I realized how long and how difficult are the problems in it and I can say figuring out every single problem in this combination book had benifited me 50 times as much as I figuring out a problem from most of the other normal tactics book. After spending hundreds of hours working in this book and cracking nearly 500 problems in it (a total of 750 problems are included in the book), my USCF rating had jumped from low 1800+ to now a little over 2000. I am not saying this is the only exercise book I've been worked on, but it is definitely the only chess book which pushed my calculation skill to a whole new level. As I going over some of my recent games with my NM friend, he pointed out for me that my main strength he can tell from my games is the ability to calculate long variation accurately and clearly recognize my opponent's threat. Throughout my own experience and the tournament games I played against Class A players and experts, I can say two of the main factors which often seperate Class A and Expert are indeed the ability to accurately calcualte long variations and capability to recognize opponent's threat.

I would recommend this combination book to player rated above 2000 and hardwoking Class A players who desire to make an expert. For players rated below 1800, I think Manual of Chess Combinations Volumn 1 and 2, and other books such as John Nunn's puzzle book and Polgar's exercise books are much more appropriate choices. Because most of the problems in this Russian Chess School exercise book require the reader to calculate at least 10 moves, it is clear that only for a player who has built up solid tactics skill and acute tactics vision, he might have the technique to figure out the the long variations and really benifited from working in these tough combinations.

Last but not the least, I want to give a subtle but significant suggestion to those who are getting ready to start to work on this book and those who are working on it: you can either simply look at the problem diagrams in the book or set up your chess pieces to think about the problem, but keep in mind only going over different long variations in your head and don't move the pieces to check them out, because only through this way you can maximize the benifit you gain from working on long variations. After all, the main target for working on a combination book is to improve our own tactics/calculation skill as much as possible, but not just finish the problems themselves as a task.

A good choice to improve your tactical ability

There are a lot of tactics books out there. This is one of the best, IF you want to get significantly better at tactics, AND will put in the effort. What makes this book so good? The puzzles are arranged so that they are increasingly difficult as you progress throught the book, and there are no hints or clues as to the specific tactic that leads to a win in each position. This is the best way to train. After all, in a game, a sign doesn't pop up saying "Pin it to win it" or "Back rank weak!" Anyone who works through this book, from cover to cover, will gain the same benefits as an athlete who engages in a couple of months of serious strength training. By the end of the book, you should routinely see positions in your own games where a sixth sense seems to alert you to the presence of a tactic. Your competitors will wonder how you do it.

About the Author
Alex Fornito completed a PhD in the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne, Australia, followed by Post-Doctoral training at the University of Cambridge, UK. He is an associate professor, Australian Research Council Future Fellow, and Deputy Director of the Brain and Mental Health Laboratory in the Monash Institute of Cognitive and Clinical Neurosciences, Australia. Alex’s research uses cognitive neuroscience, network science, and graph theory to understand brain network organization in health and disease. He has published over 100 scientific articles, much of which are focused on the development and application of new methods to understand how brain networks dynamically adapt to changing task demands, how they are disrupted by disease, and how they are shaped by genetic influences.

Andrew Zalesky completed his PhD in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He works with neuroscientists, utilizing his engineering expertise in networks to understand human brain organization in health and disease. He has developed widely used methods for modeling and performing statistical inference on brain imaging data. His methods are utilized to investigate brain connectivity abnormalities in disease. He identified some of the first evidence of connectome pathology in schizophrenia. Andrew currently holds a fellowship from the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia. He is based at the University of Melbourne and holds a joint appointment between the Melbourne Neuropsychiatry Centre and the Melbourne School of Engineering. He leads the Systems Neuropsychiatry Group.

Ed Bullmore trained in medicine at the University of Oxford and St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, and then in psychiatry at the Bethlem Royal and Maudsley Hospital, London. In 1993, he was a Wellcome Trust (Advanced) Research Fellow at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, where he completed a PhD in the statistical analysis of MRI data, before moving to Cambridge as Professor of Psychiatry in 1999. Currently, he is co-Chair of Cambridge Neuroscience, Scientific Director of the Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre, and Head of the Department of Psychiatry in the University of Cambridge. He is also an honorary Consultant Psychiatrist, and Director of R&D in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Foundation NHS Trust. Since 2005, he has worked half-time for GlaxoSmithKline, currently focusing on immuno-psychiatry. He has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and the Academy of Medical Sciences. He has published about 500 scientific papers, and his work has been highly cited. He has played an internationally-leading role in understanding brain connectivity and networks by graph theoretical analysis of neuroimaging and other neuroscientific datasets.

Towards network neurology

This is an outstanding book, because the authors achieve a perfect balance between qualitative, intuitive neurophysiological interpretations and mathematical rigour of graph theory applied to structural and functional brain networks. The concepts are very clearly explained and comprehensively illustrated by well chosen examplary cases, which are drawn from a large spectrum ranging from animal to the human nervous system.
From my neurologist's/epileptologist's point of view this is one of the very few books (such as Olaf Sporn's Networks of the Brain (MIT Press) or Gyorgy Buzsaki's Rhythms of the Brain) that are really helpful to clinicians interested in trans-disciplinary research and might thus hopefully help to pave the way to a future "network neurology/epileptology".

About the Author
Native Arizonian Jan MacKell Collins is an author and historian whose work focuses on prostitution history and other interesting aspects of the West. Author of over two thousand magazine articles, her writing appears in Colorado Gambler Magazine, Kiva Magazine and True West Magazine. Her 2009 book Red Light Women of the Rocky Mountains was nominated for a WILLA award by Women Writing the West in 2011 she was a co-nominee for the 2010 anthology, Extraordinary Women of the Rocky Mountain West.

A Fine Book on Old West Pioneer Prostitutes

Jan MacKell Collins has just come out with another well written and researched book on Old West prostitution. This is her third book on this subject. Her other two books, BROTHELS, BORDELLOS, & BAD GIRLS: PROSTITUTION IN COLORADO 1860-1930 (2004) and RED LIGHT WOMEN OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS (2009) have added a great deal of knowledge and understanding of these important painted ladies of the west. This third book continues the process.
This book is easy to read and understand. Her many citations are a good indication of her extensive research. I have done a great deal of research on the topic myself and I continue to learn more from each of her books. Her coverage of prostitution in Prescott is the best and most extensive to date.
I particularly liked her use of Sanborn maps that show where the women plied their trade in Prescott. These maps are quite revealing and this is especially the case where the author has made various interpretations. This book also contains photos that have not been seen by the public.
I feel WILD WOMEN OF PRESCOTT, ARIZONA should be in the library of everyone interested in the pioneer prostitutes who worked and helped settle the American West. Her book receives an “A” from this retired professor.
