Review
Arguably one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all-time, Michaels offers readers an intimate look at his transformation from a self-destructive, drug-addled superstar to a devoted father, husband, and born again Christian. Michaels wrote about his career up to 2002 in his first book, Heartbreak and amp; Triumph (2005), and here he focuses on how he incorporated his faith into the dazzling and strange world of pro wrestling, including his role as a mentor to young wrestlers and his relationship with WWE CEO Vince McMahon. Each chapter leads with a short Bible passage, and as his story moves from wrestling to his retirement in 2010, he provides faith-based advice on subjects such as tithing, self-awareness, and selfdiscipline. Still, the book is not overly preachy and is told with self-deprecating humor and candor. Michaels, who currently hosts a hunting show on the Outdoor Channel called MacMillan River Adventure, has appeal across multiple demographic categories, and this slim volume has something for all of them. Hard to stay indifferent to the heartbreak kid's story (3.5**)
By T. Skylar
First and foremost, wrestling is not the focal point of Shawn Michaels' second book. His first oeuvre was commissioned by the WWE and more wrestling oriented. No this time around it's about one man's journey to Christ and how he changed his ways and turned his life around. Christianity, god and praying became a huge part of Shawn's life and that is the focus of the book. It's also about the love of his life, Rebecca, and their kids and Michaels' love for live. I'm not going to spoil it and say what was the event that lead him to Christ but it's interesting journey to there. That's truly what the book is about.

There is still a lot of wrestling in it, of course, but it goes deeper into who Shawn is as a person and what happened and happens outside the ring. Michaels discusses some of the issues he encountered with wrestling as he came back following his conversion. It gives a good look into his psyche as he was making his comeback to wrestling and the recovery it took after four years away from the sport. I find that the book focuses primarily on the years 2002 up until the present day. A lot of details is given into those years and we get great stories with Vince McMahon, Triple H and more. It was fantastic to read about all the thought and effort that went into his matches with Undertaker at Wrestlemania 25 and 26. It was surprising to read that their first match was only allotted fifteen minutes (they went well over that) and that the Undertaker first learned of the rematch watching Raw! We also get flashbacks of Michaels' dad supporting him when he decided he wanted to be a wrestler and his early days with tag-team partner Marty Janetty. So the book isn't about wrestling but there's still a lot of wrestling in it.

This time around it wasn't a book the WWE asked Shawn to write, but rather one that he made on his own terms for his own reasons. I was hoping for more of a complete memoir that would cover both his in-ring accomplishments and his life outside of it. Wrestling with is has portions of both but l don't see it as either. It ends up being very thin and brief (about 150 pages without the introductions by HHH and Stone Cold) and a very fast read at that. That's really the only disappointment l have with the book. It was a good read and l felt that there was a chance to have his whole story told. Aside it's main goal of sharing Michaels' faith and his change of life, it feels like it merely scratches the surface so if you're expecting more you'll end up feeling a little empty which is how l felt. It's solid yet very quick read but l suspect that due to the book's main matter it won't appeal to everyone. My only complain and why l gave it a "low" rating is that it is such a quick read and couldn't believe how thin it was at first. More content would've made this an excellent book instead of a good book but ultimately it's hard to stay indifferent and not to be touched by Michaels words and story. 3.5 stars.

Shawn Michaels has been my favorite wrestler. I found this book to provide good ...
By Justin Ostrofsky
When I was 9 years old, my first exposure to wrestling was watching the 1995 Royal Rumble where Shawn Michaels won the Rumble match even though he was the Number 1 entrant. Ever since, Shawn Michaels has been my favorite wrestler.

I found this book to provide good insight into a man who hit a low-point in his life, and the ways he came around to overcoming the obstacles to his happiness. The only complaint I would have about the book was that it was quite short, and there were many parts where he just glossed over some topics without going into more detail about them.

Regardless, this book isn't primarily one about wrestling. It's more about a story of how one's priorities in life change, and just one example of how one comes to their own happiness.

I would like to comment on an earlier review where a person said that liberal Non-Believers should not read this book. I am an agnostic who leans heavily towards atheism, and yet, I still found great value in reading this book. Just because I don't share the Christian faith, that does not mean I cannot appreciate a story of the journey a man went through to go from being a drug-addicted, deeply unhappy person who just lived for themselves to a sober, happy man who lives primarily for his family and faith. Everyone has their own journey to happiness, and we as humans should celebrate our diversity. Even if you are not Christian, one can appreciate and value the ideas expressed by Shawn Michaels: the importance of family, the importance of not having one's happiness be exclusively determined by what one does for a living and the ability for people to dramatically change their lives around. These are not ideas exclusive to Christianity, but are shared by people of all beliefs. And although Shawn Michaels talks about these things through the lens of Christianity, that does not make them irrelevant to non-Christians.

Not another wrestling memoir
By Andrew F.
Shawn Michaels' wrestling story has been told in both book and DVD forms. This is the story of his spiritual journey, with wrestling playing more of a background role.

Wrestling fans will learn about:
- his mindset approaching his (second) retirement at Wrestlemania 26--and how he forced Vince McMahon's hand by challenging the Undertaker on live TV
- how he ultimately made peace with Bret Hart years after the "Montreal Screwjob"
- what he really thought about working with Jose Lothario, his real-life trainer and briefly on-air manager

But it really is more about his faith, including:
- the rock bottom moment with his son that lead him back to religion
- how he reconciled his career (with its unsavory elements and underlying deception) with his faith
- what he still "wrestles" with when it comes to being a Christian

The book helps humanize Michaels, who is humbled by a bad business venture and is candid about his mistakes. It should also silence any doubters about whether his born-again status is just another persona. The book provides a first-person account into the mind of someone seeking salvation, and it should prove instructive for anyone facing a similar journey--whether they are on the verge of bottoming out or on a path to enlightenment. Wrestling fans will gain a new appreciation for "The Heartbreak Kid"--and perhaps a new perspective on life.
