About the Author
In 2010, after ten years of searching for meaning in his life, Toby Downton had a vision for a game that everyone could play in a virtual world. Captivated by what he saw, he proceeded to devote a large amount of his spare time to investigating how to make the vision a reality. At the end of 2011 he left his job at the London Stock Exchange in order to commit to learning about technology and the world of tech startups. Soon after he co-founded Matter, a small digital innovation consultancy with two friends, and worked both as a business analyst, and in business development for the company up until March of 2014, when the Facebook purchase of Oculus Rift inspired him to write the book that showed the game and company he had envisioned.

Worth a look at for LitRPG fans
By J.
For fans of LitRPG, this well-written book brings something different. This book is set in the near future (2020 to be exact)--much closer to the present than most LitRPGs. The technology described seems more plausible and likely. The virtual reality in the book seems more "computer-like" than an alternate world, even in full immersion. Also, instead of skills, levelling, classes, and the other trappings of traditional MMOs, this book describes an elimination-style game where players complete puzzles and mini-games to advance in rankings. I really liked how the concept of a 10,000 x 10,000 person grid was described and implemented. I also thought the use of puzzles and mario-kart style games (instead of fighting monsters or crafting) was interesting.
However, I didn't like the tone of the book. It was difficult to tell if it wanted to be a kids book, a teen book, or an adult one. The concepts in the story would make a good adult book. Yet several of the games and conversations were a bit childish (well, the book starts when the MC was 14), like a kids book. Also, there is a bit of repetition and overt clarification (instead of leaving it up to the reader) like you find in many kids books. The main character is a strong, skilled, and well-developed teen as one would expect in a teen book. However, the recreational drug use by the MC and so many other characters seemed unnecessary. I was also annoyed when the MC downed hard liquor before a game challenge of full body coordination without consequence.
These things dropped it from a solid 4 to just a 3 for me.

Solarversia Soars
By Jamie
Woot! What a ride! What if they built a game, and everybody played? Or at least about 100,000,000 people or so. The Game takes an entire year to play, and keeps getting more challenging and evolves as it goes along. The book does a great job of bringing the reader into hat VR world, as well as the outer world at large.
We have a truly bent and twisted baddie, who wants to create the ultimate world conquering AI, all for altruistic reasons of course. And he has amassed a huge terrorist network, and is bent on destroying the company (Solarwerks) and the hero (Nova) of the book. Yes, it's been done before, but not like this. Which is why this such a compelling read. The author makes many of the characters multi layered and well textured, plus provides a great amount of angsty stuff. All this is done in a quick paced format that leaves you turning the pages quite rapidly.
Toby Downton followed me on Twitter, and suggested I read his book. Hmmm... for some as yet unexplained reason, I seem to attract a lot of newbie SciFi authors, all of whom seem to think my life would be incomplete without devouring their baby. This time, he was right!

A year long game is even cooler than it sounds!
By digi
A year long game. That sounds perfect for obsessive gamers. I read Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, and of course loved it. When I began this book, I was warned that it would be different. I began reading, and it wasn't long before I was hooked. While there was a bit of predictability, it was in a manner that I appreciate. It also had some twists and turns that I didn't see coming.
The unexpected portion of the story had a darker tone, but was fascinating. In the way that seeing an accident on the highway makes you drive by slowly while rubbernecking. That strong curiosity that you can't help having. It fit into the overall story, and made it far more urgent. While I read this, my heart rate increased from the suspense more than once.
While the characters weren't overly developed, they were familiar enough that they didn't need further description. We all know people just like them in our everyday lives, and the pace of the novel didn't suffer from going into too much unnecessary detail. This was a fun book to read. I'm a software engineer and gamer, so it was an obvious choice for me. But the novel was written in a manner that made it exciting and didn't require a lot of technical knowledge beforehand to understand what was going on. If you've heard of virtual reality, you're golden.
I recommend this novel knowing you're very likely to enjoy it as much as I did. Thanks for reading.
