A Must-Read (Especially for Introverts)
By Kelsey Greider
This book is best read after Mortimer Adler’s companion piece, How to Read a Book, which outlines the responsibilities and strategies needed to successfully engage in reading and writing. Similarly, in How to Speak, How to Listen Adler offers the same practical and direct approach to the reciprocal processes of speaking and listening. Adler focuses on building his own ethos throughout the book through a comprehensive overview of the art of rhetoric using real life examples and references to others’ work.

Adler takes us through the entire process, beginning with our deficits: communication pitfalls, educational gaps, and hubris. He distinguishes between different types of speeches, such as what he calls the “Sales Talk” or lectures in order to strategize for varied motivations for speaking. These chapters of the book are detailed and user-friendly for those in educational fields and beyond. This book is not about pedagogy; it is intended to be an academic instruction manual for the masses. Adler establishes this objective early on.

At the end of the book, Adler emphasizes the reciprocity of speaking and listening by connecting communication to our collective sense of humanity. He sees this as particularly important in an increasingly digital world where communication feels one-sided and is delivered less often through personal interaction. Building, maintaining, and honing these skills is essential to our happiness. We need them to participate in all levels of community: international, national, regional, and local politics. Also as we get older, communication becomes an increasingly necessary tool for bonding and creating relationships with others. However, at the end, Adler tells us why these things really matter: speaking and listening are essential to learning, and the lifelong acquisition of knowledge, friendship, and discovery is imperative to engage in the world. Life does not mean much in a vacuum. How to Speak, How to Listen is about the reciprocity of human connection to a world that seems disconnected.

Clear Points about Speaking and Listening from a Master Communicator
By Philip Vassallo
Mortimer J. Adler's "How to Speak How to Listen" makes several instructive points for the practical person seeking a theoretical framework as well as the novice professional speaker and meeting participant. These suggestions also connect well to writing at work.

Adler suggests an order for introducing into a presentation Aristotle's time-tested tripartite of persuasion as follows: ethos (credibility), pathos (emotion), and logos (logic). In addition, he examines two indispensable considerations of speech preparation, once again borrowing from Greek: taxis (the structure) and lexis (the language).

Some of his observations are memorable:

"Always risk talking over (your audience's) heads."

"Truly great books ... are the few books that are over everybody's head all of the time."

In speeches, "On the one hand, the language employed and the sentences constructed should be clear without being plain. On the other hand, they should have a certain elevation above the ordinary without being obscure."

"The most prevalent mistake that people make about both listening and reading is to regard them as passively receiving rather than actively participating."

"To disagree before you understand is impertinent. To agree is inane."

Not enough examples!
By Accounting Goddess
There is a lot of good information in the book, there are just not enough examples. I like to learn by actually seeing the sample journal entries. In my opinion, there weren't nearly enough of them. I would not have purchased this book except that it was required for my accounting class.

Poor execution
By VanderHoly
Being in the last year of my accounting degree I've read plenty of textbook and this one is by far the worst I've had to use.

Core Concepts contains plenty of information but it is hard to find what you are looking for. Unlike most accounting textbook the text is in small print and the headers don't help direct you to the information your looking for like other accounting books. Its extremely frustrating the amount of time spent looking for information I read the day before when doing homework.

Gov and Not For Profit Accounting text
By maryk
This book is very indepth and not for someone that is not detail oriented and doesn't already have a strong knowledge of accounting transactions. Also the text covers more about government accounting than Not-For-Profit.

Set in a rich, high-fantasy world inspired by ancient Rome, Sabaa Tahir's AN EMBER IN THE ASHES told the story of Laia, a slave fighting for her family, and Elias, a young soldier fighting for his freedom.

Now, in A TORCH AGAINST THE NIGHT, Elias and Laia are running for their lives.

After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire.

Laia is determined to break into Kauf—the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison—to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars' survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.

But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene—Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike.

Bound to Marcus's will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own—one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape...and kill them both.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of September 2016: With sequels there’s always an underlying worry that the second book won’t live up to its predecessor, but Sabaa Tahir’s A Torch Against the Night not only meets expectations—it surpasses them. Tahir returns to Elias and Laia’s quest to rescue Laia’s brother from an impenetrable prison while eluding the Emperor and Commandant. Helen, now the Blood Shrike, is under the Emperor’s orders to kill them, and it’s clear that she still knows her former best friend as well as ever. The stakes are higher in this novel and the suspense just keeps building from new directions. The characters’ internal conflict is almost painful to read, but that’s part of what makes the story so intense. How can you kill someone you love? And how do you watch someone you love die trying to save you? Packed with cliff hangers, A Torch Against the Night ends with the same feeling as the first: a burning desire to read the next book. Right. This. Minute. --Seira Wilson, The Amazon Book Review

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—In this sequel to An Ember in the Ashes, Martial Elias and Scholar Laia are trying to escape from Serra and reach the prison of Kauf, where Laia's brother has been imprisoned for having secret knowledge of Martial weapons. Their journey will be extremely hazardous, since Helene Aquilla, childhood friend and fellow Mask, who is now Blood Shrike for the Emperor, has been ordered to hunt Elias down. Elias and Laia are also trying to evade Elias's ruthless mother, the Commandant, who is scheming to seize power and is willing even to poison her own son to achieve her ends. Most dangerous of all, however, is the grim prison of Kauf, where their attempt to rescue Laia's brother leads to further horrors and some surprises. Told in the alternating voices of Elias, Laia, and Helene, this book is even darker and grimmer than the first, which readers will need to be familiar with in order to follow the twists and turns of the plot. Strong and compelling characters, particularly Helene, who is fleshed out more than in the previous volume, and a number of action-packed sequences help keep things moving. VERDICT This one is bound to be popular with fans of the first installment, making this a must-purchase.—Kathleen E. Gruver, Burlington County Library, Westampton, NJ

Good but not as good as first
By M
I liked this book but not as much as the first. Actually I would have given it 3 1/2 stars if possible, but I rounded up. The first book really grabbed my attention and this one was just ok for me.

I enjoyed Helene's point of view in this story to help us see what's happening on the Empire's side of things. I feel so bad for Helene, she tries so hard and loves Elias so much. The main female character I don't car for as much. As you can see I can't remember her name and I remember everyone else's in the book. Lol. Anyway, I know it won't happen but I am team Helene and Elias. I am assuming Helene will end up sacrificing herself for Elias by the end of the series or ending up with the interesting new character in this book.

The fascinating story continues
By Jennifer Shelton
Sabaa hooked me in from the very beginning and still hasn't let me go. The 2nd book doesn't disappoint, unless you count the long wait for the next book. There was no annoying reiteration of events from the first book. The action picks up right where Ember ended...or maybe paused is a better word. The characters are so well-fleshed that you can't help but feel with them, fight with them, and be taken over by other emotions as you experience it with them. We even get glimpses of understanding of the "evil" ones. Throughout both books you notice a theme of choices, each one with its own set of consequences, but inexorably dragging us toward a dramatic conclusion.
Sabaa has created a wonderful world full of complex characters and broiling situations. I really enjoy her writing style, even if open endings are frustrating for a hungry bookworm! I will recommend (and have already) to anyone and everyone. This is a series I will be reading over and over, and one day passing on to my kids.

This book isn't as good as the first one. The story is weird and convoluted. There is almost no character building or movement in the story. The only reason I made it through the book was because it had an audiobook.

Pyrrhic Victory: French Strategy and Operations in the Great War, by Robert A. Doughty

As the driving force behind the Allied effort in World War I, France willingly shouldered the heaviest burden. In this masterful book, Robert Doughty explains how and why France assumed this role and offers new insights into French strategy and operational methods.

French leaders, favoring a multi-front strategy, believed the Allies could maintain pressure on several fronts around the periphery of the German, Austrian, and Ottoman empires and eventually break the enemy's defenses. But France did not have sufficient resources to push the Germans back from the Western Front and attack elsewhere. The offensives they launched proved costly, and their tactical and operational methods ranged from remarkably effective to disastrously ineffective.

Using extensive archival research, Doughty explains why France pursued a multi-front strategy and why it launched numerous operations as part of that strategy. He also casts new light on France's efforts to develop successful weapons and methods and the attempts to use them in operations.

An unparalleled work in French or English literature on the war, Pyrrhic Victory is destined to become the standard account of the French army in the Great War.

This well-written, exhaustively researched history of France's role in WWI adds a French perspective not often found in English-language literature on these seminal military events. Explicating France's "grand strategy... [of] waging a multifront war against the Central Powers," West Point history department head Doughty (Breaking Point: Sedan and the Fall of France, 1940) convincingly debunks the clich of "France's war effort as a series of ill-conceived but energetically executed operations with no connection to a coherent strategy." Doughty sheds light on Commander-in-Chief Joseph Joffre's point of view on the "bloody failures in the Artois, Champagne, and St.-Mihiel offensives" (1915), Nivelle's disastrous 1917 offensive and Ptain's salvation of the French army so that Allied Supreme Cmdr. Ferdinand Foch could lead it in the three-pronged 1917 Allied offensive, among other campaigns. Add his insight into military strategy to his portraits of lesser-known figures, such as Fifth Army commander Gen. Franchet d'Esperey, and the sum—pro-French but not uncritically so—is a valuable addition to WWI literature. (Nov.)

Review
Pyrrhic Victory is the first work to address comprehensively the strategic planning and the operational execution that shaped World War I. Doughty makes an eloquent case for the strength and flexibility of the French Third Republic as it confronted a mortal challenge. He brings an intellectual force and clarity of expression, as well as a gifted professional soldier's understanding of French aims and intentions. This long-awaited work will stand as the definitive account of French strategy in the Great War. (Dennis Showalter author of Patton and Rommel)

Doughty fills a glaring gap in the literature on World War I with a magisterial book. He is very good on the French army's commanders, balanced but incisive in his judgments, and particularly revealing on the tensions between Petain and Foch. (Hew Strachan, author of The First World War)

Robert Doughty has at last brought the French Army to its proper place in the historiography of the First World War: at the heart of the military operations on the Western Front. This represents one of the most important contributions to the history of the war in the last fifty years. (Williamson Murray, co-author of A War to Be Won)

This well-written, exhaustively researched history of France's role in WWI adds a French perspective not often found in English-language literature on these seminal military events...Add [Doughty's] insight into military strategy to his portraits of lesser-known figures, such as Fifth Army commander Gen. Franchet d'Esperey, and the sum--pro-French but not uncritically so--is a valuable addition to WWI literature. (Publishers Weekly 2005-09-26)

This is a book for which historians of the First World War have been waiting...Although there are some excellent studies of individual aspects of the subject, until now we have lacked a comprehensive account of French strategy and campaigns. In Robert A. Doughty's superb Pyrrhic Victory, the French army at last has the scholarly study it deserves...Pyrrhic Victory is solidly founded on primary sources, culled both from archives and the volumes of the French official history. Doughty provides an essay on sources rather than a conventional bibliography. (Gary Sheffield RUSI Journal)

Pyrric Victory is a most useful contribution to our understanding of La Rpublique dans la Grande Guerre. (Nathan M. Greenfield Times Literary Supplement 2006-05-05)

Robert Doughty, the longtime chair of the History Department at West Point, has...done the field a great service with this intelligent and well-crafted study of French operations from 1914 to 1918. Readers will find much to interest them here and much to make them change their preconceptions of how and why the French fought as they did...Scholars interested in the military aspects of the war, especially at the level of high command, should read this book. It will help to dispel many of the old chestnuts that continue to cloud our understanding of the important role played by the French Army from 1914 to 1918. (Michael Neiberg Journal of Military History)

Every scholar of the Great War, and anyone interested in a
basic grounding in the subject, should read the book under review here.
Robert Doughty has delivered a tour de force, a major contribution to military history and the history of the Great War...The French military effort in the Great War has always deserved a history written in three dimensions, neither as hagiography nor as caricature. Now we have it. (Leonard V. Smith Journal of Military History)

Robert A. Doughty has filled a longstanding gap in the military history of World War I...This is an admirably researched text, well versed in the relevant historiography, and the publishers deserve congratulation for providing sufficient space for Doughty to pursue his topic in depth...His book is organized as a series of extended narrative chapters, which incorporate judicious commentaries on the controversies that surround French strategy and its authors. (David Stevenson American Historical Review 2007-10-01)

Doughty recognizes the high-, short- and long-term costs of what he legitimately calls a Pyrrhic victory. But in this seminal book he demonstrates the crucial role of the army and its generals in structuring a triumph of national determination. He demonstrates as well that for all its errors of preparation and execution, the army's prestige was by no means undeserved. This dual intellectual achievement merits the highest recognition by soldiers and scholars alike. (Dennis E. Showalter Parameters 2007-04-01)

This is General Doughty's valedictory work capping decades of research, analysis and writing on the French Army in two world wars. In it he presents a thorough yet concise analysis of French strategy and operations...Also analysed are the political forces and personalities at work in France and internationally, the push and pull between easterners and westerners, as well as the evolution of inter-Entente relations as the conflict progressed. Indeed, Doughty's character sketches of French military and political figures are among the best this reviewer has seen. He emphasises the nation's grim determination to hang on, to prevail despite having suffered proportionately the highest casualties of any Western Front combatant. (Len Shurtleff Stand To! 2007-01-01)

Robert A. Doughty has rendered another service to history, and to France...This is now the best English-language book about French strategy in the First World War. (Robert Young International History Review 2007-02-01)

A new look at WW1
By Tom Munro
Most histories of the First World War have focused on the British or German perspective. This is a history of the French operations, which provided the bulk of the resistance to the Germans on the western front.

Histories of the First World War suffered from partisan books written directly after the war that gave a caricatured version of operations. They suggested that French and British generals failed to appreciate the impact of modern technology and simply used men as cannon fodder. This book is one that seeks to counter that view and show how the French commanders reacted to the success and failure of operations and developed strategies which evolved during the war to lessen the loss of human life and develop more efficient methods of attack and defence. In fact the year of 1914 saw one of the French Armies considerable triumphs the defeat of the German movement through Belgium aimed at outflanking the French line. This success occurred when the Germans devoted the majority of their army to the western front in an attempt to gain an early victory. England at the time had only mobilised a small army so the defeat of the Germans was a remarkable victory.

One of the interesting points made by the book is that some 50% of the French losses occurred in the first year of the war before the development of the trench system. The reason of course was that before the development of the trenches when there was the war of movement infantry were much more vulnerable to artillery fire. In 1915 when the French attacked again and again in an attempt to aid the Russian offensives the losses were although substantial far less than in the disastrous first year. The losses suffered in resisting the German offensive at Verdun again were again less than in 1915. It was only in 1918 that France carried out the series of attacks that finally led to Germany's capitulation that the casualty figures increased to levels close to 1915.

The book is interesting as it shows how the French developed tactics over time. The rolling barrage to protect the infantry in its advance. The notion of the flexible defence so that infantry was kept away from the front line to avoid the heavy losses which resulted from opening barrages and instead using counter attacks and the holding of key points to inflict casualties on the attacker.

In fact it is clear that the French became frustrated with the English under Haig who launched his Somme offensive without using the sorts of advances in strategy that had been developed by the French and Germans thus turning that battle into a costly stalemate. One of the attractions of the book is that it shows the history of the English campaign and issues though an observers eyes.

The book also reveals how close the Germans came to victory in 1918. If Ludendorff had been able to move more quickly to separate the English and French armies in detail he could have won. Instead he relied on costly staged offensives delayed so much that the French and English were able to hang on.

Despite the loss of the major industrial section of their country the French were able to turn their country into an arsenal producing of the weapons that were used by the Americans. Huge numbers of tanks aircraft and heavy artillery.

The book also shows clearly the importance of the operations in Macedonian in hastening the end of the war. The attack on this front in `1918 led to Bulgaria being forced out of the war. This broke the German supply line to Turkey which meant that the British under Allenby were able to advance from Egypt easily also defeating that country. Lastly the surrender of Bulgaria opened up yet another front that the weakened Austro-Hungarian Empire could not hold. One of the more interesting books on the First World War which is valuable in giving another perspective on the conflict.

Great World War I book
By O. Pflug
Pyrrhic victory is an important English-language addition to scholarship on France's role in the First World War. Nearly 1.5 million Frenchmen died in the war, a loss that would help end France's reign as a great power. Although France won the war--sacrificing more than any allied victor--the costs of four years of battle proved disastrous.

Pyrrhic victory is first and foremost a study of the French command's strategic goals. Doughty also discusses tactical maneuvers in some key battles. While the tactical coverage may be a little inconsistent at points, or open to debate, explanation of the evolving strategy of French leaders is first rate. There is little on the soldiers themselves, though the effects of the 1917 mutinies are discussed. Doughty relies most on official government sources and the accounts of French leadership. Those more interested in daily life in the trenches will have to look elsewhere. But anyone deeply interested in the military operations of the Great War will need to read Pyrrhic victory.

A classic
By 1.
Robert Doughty has written the definitive history of France's involvment in the First World War. In the first chapter of the book, Doughty is strongly critical of Joffre for spreading out French forces and leaving them vulnerable to German attacks in the opening phases of World War I. Doughty writes that Joffre employed faulty tactics in the French offensives of 1915 by launching continuous attacks that left French forces out of range of their artillery and vulnerable to German machineguns and counterattacks. In 1916 methodical attacks with limited objectives were used in the intial Somme offensive and at Verdun. However in 1917 General Nivelle launched his failed offensive that was mainly the return of the continuous offensive tactics. But once Petain assumed command in late 1917 the French employed the methodical approach to tactics. Doughty praises General Foch's strategic sense by ordering Petain to counterattack at the Second Battle of the Marne and Soissons which stopped the German offensive in 1918. Moreover the French offensive in Salonika and the employment of French soldiers in Italy helped persuade Austria to leave the war and this left Germany diplomatically isolated. However by late 1918, Doughty concludes that the French army was exhausted and needed the help of the British and the Americans to win the war. The only weakness of this book was that Doughty largely ignored the development of the French armored and air forces, otherwise I would strongly reccommend this book about the French sacrifice in the First World War that is largely forgotten by Americans.

The Crystal Frontier: A Novel in Nine Stories, by Carlos Fuentes

The nine stories comprising The Crystal Frontier, a brilliant work of fiction from Carlos Fuentes, all concern people who in one way or another have had something to do with, or still are part of, the family of one Leonardo Barroso, a powerful oligarch of northern Mexico with manifold connections to the United States.

From Library Journal
Leonardo Barroso is an unscrupulous Mexican oligarch whose fortress of a villa is only a short drive from the "crystal frontier" of the title, and each one of the nine stories comprising this work explores the life of someone touched by him. There's Juan Zamora, whose medical studies at Cornell were made possible by the stratagems of Barroso; the beautiful Michelina from Mexico City, whom Barroso marries; off to his son and then takes as his own, and the working girls of Barroso's maquiladoras, who lust after the gringo male dancers of the clubs. The outrageous racism of Fuentes's Anglo characters, such as Miss Amy Dunbar and border patrol Dan Polonsky, may seem excessive and stereotyped, but it is also hard to deny that such attitudes exist along this troubled border. Fuentes masterfully interweaves Mexican politics, economics, and history within the individual stories, giving a brilliant update on relations between an extremely poor country and the richest in the world. A recent (1995) and highly recommended work by Mexico's premiere novelist.?Jack Shreve, Allegany Community Coll., Cumberland, Md.

From Booklist
Fuentes has no qualms about using fiction as a vehicle for social analysis. When this union between art and commentary succeeds, it generates indelible scenes of tremendous passion, of which there are many in this set of nine loosely connected stories, but when it fails, Fuentes' tales turn awkward. It may be that Fuentes' immense sense of responsibility toward Mexico and its people--a commitment that compels him to dramatize the entrenched corruption and ferocious poverty that drive so many people across the border--at times simply overwhelms the delicate emotional balance crucial to the magic of a story. That said, these are nonetheless gleaming fables about the volatile and urgent relationship between Mexico and the U.S., unnerving stories rich in metaphor, wit, and remarkable characters, from Don Leonardo Barroso, an ambiguous figure of great wealth and power, to Juan Zamora, who leaves his oppressively poor life in Mexico City to study medicine at Cornell, where he discovers both his homosexuality and his deep compassion. Then there's young, vulnerable Marina, who dreams of seeing the ocean as she works assembling televisions in a factory along the border, and the hero of the haunting title story, Lisandro Chavez, who, along with dozens of other men, is flown into Manhattan to spend a weekend cleaning the inside of a glass skyscraper, the latest high-tech form of migrant labor. Fuentes boldly shines his high beams on "the illusory crystal divider, the glass membrane between Mexico and the U.S.," thus illuminating both our vast differences and our manifold connection. From Kirkus Reviews
A sardonic ``novel in nine stories'' about relations between the US and Mexico, by the latter country's acclaimed author of such cosmopolitan fictions as Terra Nostra (1976) and The Campaign (1991), among others. Each story portrays a conflict involving a family member, intimate, or business associate of ``the powerful political Leonardo Barroso,'' a deal- and king-maker with a foot in both countries and a shadowy demeanor and personal history. For example, ``A Capital Girl'' traces the emotional vacillations endured by Michelina, an impressionable young woman who idolizes her godfather, Leonardo, as a result accepting marriage to his deeply unstable son Mariano. These and other characters reappear in several stories, a few of which are rather too nakedly discursive (e.g., the wheelchair-bound narrator's monologue in ``The Line of Oblivion,'' and a predictably manic-depressive relationship between a wealthy white matron and her abused Mexican housemaid in ``Girlfriends''). Indeed, most of the stories are too frequently interrupted by ironic commentaries on both American arrogance and myopia and Mexican illiteracy and inertia. However, ``Spoils'' presents a delicious characterization of its protagonist Dionisio, a cooking expert and gourmet explorer of several species of appetites. And in ``Malintzin Las Maquilas''--a lively, sexy story whose sociopolitical content emerges naturally from its character relationships--Fuentes vividly depicts the volatile bonding among three women factory workers. The long (and uneven) climactic story, ``Rio Grande, Rio Bravo,'' explores in too pat a fashion the human and diplomatic ramifications of ``crossing the border,'' and brings the volume to a stagy (if perfectly logical) violent end. A vast improvement over Fuentes's recent self-indulgent metafiction Diana (1995), and a pretty creditable dramatization of the mocking rhyme with which the book leaves us: ``poor Mexico,/poor United States,/so far from God,/so near to one another.'' -- Copyright 1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Culture Clash
By Enrique Torres
Carlos Fuentes is without doubt one of Mexico's most prolific writers. The fact that his novels are filled with social- political commentary makes him controversial. Some people like their novels without the authors views, others love it as they like the added "realism". Fuentes makes no qualms about his views and his portrayl of Mexicans on both sides of the border and the huge differences in cultures which create conflicts. The concept of this book is interesting but falls a little short on substance. Nine chapters detailing different peoples lives on both sides of the border and how they are interelated. The loose interweaving of the characters lives on both sides of the border are accurate and hence disturbing to some readers. The story centers around one powerful Mexican, Leonardo Barroso and various other people on both sides of the border who are loosely connected. The beauty of this book is in the authors insight into the vast differences between Mexico and the U.S. and how this plays out on his characters. Fuentes is a master of language and his imagery is magnificent. His use of language creates a world that takes on a new life as he transports the reader into his world. An example is one of his characters missing life in Mexico " Not a single tile, not one adobe brick-only marble, cement, stone, plaster, and more wrought iron, gates behind gates, gates within gates, gates facing gates, a labyrinth of gates, and the inaudible buzz of garage doors that opened with a stench of old gasoline, involuntary urinated by the herds of Porsches, Mercedes, BMWs that reposed like mastodons within the caves of the garages". Fuentes is a master at drawing vivid paralels as he creates images of Woolworths contrasted with mercados, or his symbolism of the Vatican and Washinton DC or his tirade on American TV pop culture filled with references to Elvis and filled with such diverse topics as Pat Boone, Charles and Diana jewelry from the Home Shopping Channel, credit cards, CD's with greatest hits, and my favorite, diet milkshakes. For people who live along the border this book is a riot at times and at others reflective of a sad and tragic love story, the relationship between cultures in the US and Mexico. As a character in the book reveals on a tatoo on his lower lip, We Are Everywhere. An excellent book for all interested in what makes these two countries "so far from God so close to heaven".

Un libro muy bueno.
By Christian Anderson
If you want to understand the complex relationship between Americans and Mexicans this is an excellent read. You'll get more out of it than any dry textbook on Mexican identity and relations with the US. It's not his best work but it is very good.

A Fragile Crystal
By Neil Scott Mcnutt
Carlos Fuentes is a major author in Mexican literature, with notable successes in history and fiction. In this book of 266 pages, he introduces us to the lives of a spectrum of persons living on both sides of the Mexican Border, particularly with Texas. He speaks with authority about the historical injustices involved in the American conquest of Texas, the War on Mexico, and our continuing hostile dependency on each other. The Americans need cheap labor and the Mexicans need jobs. In nine vignettes (chapters), he gives us a glimpse into the lives of various persons on both sides of the border. The Mexicans come North to go to school legally or to do menial work illegally or legally. The message in this book is quite clear. We want the Mexicans when we need them to do tasks cheaply that our own labor force will not do. We do not want the Mexicans when they become dependent on us and stress our social system for such things as health care or education. Carlos Fuentes points to the type of economic slavery that this creates, not much better than the era of slavery which Abraham Lincoln fought against. Fuentes achieves some balance in showing also the internal corruption of Mexico, and the many ways that they miss opportunities to improve themselves. The vignettes are funny, sad, passionate, and sometimes lacking in clear focus. Some characters fade into and out of various chapters creating a fabric of impressions about the life on the border. The reader has to relax and let the images flow past, with the poetic inserts by Fuentes about the various conflicts. This is clearly not his best book but in some ways it perhaps reveals more of his own most heartfelt conflicts which accumulated while he spent many years as a child and young adult in the USA. It is a particularly good book to read while you are traveling near the Mexican border and can get your own impressions of this SCENE.
